Season 1 (I dunno if I'll do more?) of PaleoArt finished.

Season 1 (I Dunno If I'll Do More?) Of PaleoArt Finished.
Season 1 (I Dunno If I'll Do More?) Of PaleoArt Finished.
Season 1 (I Dunno If I'll Do More?) Of PaleoArt Finished.

When I had set out to draw ancient animals after doing creepy crawlies for most of a year, I realised I'd taken for granted how great it is for the animal you're drawing to be... finished?

A lot of PaleoArt is using your imagination to draw the completed animal as it would have appeared in life. As such, many of the animals I drew in this collection were closer to my typical cartoony art style than when I drew insects and arachnids.

Colour scheme was a huge part of the challenge as well. As you may see by looking at the earlier paleolife compared the later ones, I did a bit of experimentation with made up colours. And later on, I took a lot of inspiration from living animals for some colour schemes.

I might get back to PaleoArt eventually, but the challenge of interpreting fossils and inventing colour schemes has tired me out, creatively, a lot quicker than BugArt, so I will be taking a break from them for now. I don't know what's next, but we'll see.

Small comic tribute to the palaeontologist Mary Anning, who discovered in the early 19th century the first fossils of an ichtyosaure. All through her life she digged out new species and exceptional fossils, her work had a huge impact on the evolutionary theory

Three-time World Taxidermy Champion Ken Walker Recreating An Extinct Irish Elk Using DNA Studies And

Three-time World Taxidermy Champion Ken Walker recreating an extinct Irish elk using DNA studies and Paleolithic cave paintings for reference. Apparently this took 4 elk hides to make!

A book recommended by fieryflyingpanda (thanks!) that talks about this mount and others done by Ken Walker:

Totally just bought it for 4 bucks, and that’s including shipping! Maybe they’ll have info on the smilodon that he did too! I’ll let you guys know!
