Four years into his professional career, Andrew Minyard is selected to join Team USA's Exy squad for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. What he anticipates will be three dull weeks of training and competition takes an unexpected turn with the appearance of a volunteer with a gentle smile, and a knack for seeing right through Andrew's defences.
My contribution to the @aftgexchange AFTG Fall Exchange 2024 for @potatoessupremacy. Thank you to the mod for organising the event!
Hiya @lesbian-kaz, here's my @aftgexchange gift for you!
Pairing: Kevaaron
Prompts: friends to lovers, professional exy, and a smidgeon of angst with a happy ending
What if I said Werewolf Andrew (fiercely loyal and protective of his pack) and Vampire Neil (forcibly turned by the Moriyama’s)
What then
Okay, so, about that last sentence, I have a theory: even if he never had any romantic feelings for Kayleigh, Tetsuji still views their relationship as one of a kind. And why wouldn't he? They created together a sport from almost nothing, just the two of them at first, obsessing over their brainchild, their own little creation. In fact, he might even see exy as their child, theirs from start to finish.
So what do you think happens when she dies and he has to raise her other child? What was once an exciting sport, one he was passionate about, starts tasting like lies because maybe it wasn't all that special after all and he feels betrayed. So he tries to make Kevin (and Riko, by extension) into the living, breathing representation of exy, the only child he ever truly loved at some point (though I have to admit that even to me this theory seems a bit convoluted).
I think that in the end, that's all exy has become to him: a weapon
Tetsuji beating his own players with their exy racquets is so fucked by itself but when you consider that he is the one who literally designed and created those racquets 30 years ago, it feels chilling. To invent an entire sport and then have the ability to twist and distort it into something sinister while hiding behind being the best and brightest? I wonder if Tetsuji ever felt passion and excitement for exy. I wonder what changed.

Partners in crime by Finneas is if Andrew and Neil broke up.
Yeah, I want to talk about the vulnerability of showing their scars: I don’t think Neil was ever self-conscious about them, as in being marked but he still was worried about them, in regards to what they represent, the fact that they show his past. And that has also never been a source of shame, he is who he is so what he really is afraid of is being discovered, being known, being found because he’s spent his life erasing himself and getting rid of different identities as fast as he obtained them. After all, it was dangerous to be known so how sweet does it feel to be able to do just the opposite (also, despite his attempts to appear as a "quiet pushover", who he truly is always breaks through his facade so we can see that regardless of the different characters he played, he still has a strong sense of self, thus the desperation, the longing to be himself). The same goes for Andrew, sure, he’s offering emotional vulnerability but also knowledge: a truth for a truth.
the shower scene this, the shower scene that
what no one talks about though is how andrew took his armbands off.
Of course it wasn’t to keep them from getting wet; the shirt he kept wearing disapproves that. It was part of their truth. He saw neils bare scars and answered with his own. One vulnerable part for another.
That’s what we should be talking about
THE RING!
