Till on his Grandmother.

Till: I am exposed in my poems, and there is nothing shameful about this (pause). You touched me, remembering my grandmother. You know, she was very sick, was in a nursing home. I decided to take her from there. I had a minivan, I made adjustments to it so that the wheelchair could fit in the van. We were accompanied by a nurse. When we arrived home, she said: “I’m leaving now, and you have to take care of granny. Are you able to?” Well, where am I going to go? I decided for myself: as a grandmother cared about me as a child, so I will take care of her. Doctors said: “Do not give her sugar, alcohol, meat and fatty food.” I did everything exactly the opposite. Gave everything she wanted. Grandma cried with the happiness that she was able to spend her last days the way she wanted. She passed away so happy…

- Are you crying? But how, with all this love, did she go to a nursing home?

Till: In Germany, it is so accepted. Older people are sent to homes where they can have proper care. But I did not want her to stay there. On the one hand, it is wonderful that I could look after her until the last day, but on the other hand, it’s terrible to watch how your loved one leaves, how he suffers. In my poems, I reflect this ugly side of life. There is a place for both the beautiful and the abominable. And, here’s a paradox, these spheres can exist simultaneously.

- What was your grandmother’s name?

Till- Siggy, Sigrid. She called me: “My Tilly. Oh, my Tilly. And I called her: “My Siggy.” She was a very large woman with big breasts. Such a portly thorough Sigrid. Therefore, I love women with big breasts.

- Do you look like your grandmother?

Till: Alike in my big kind heart.

5 moments when Till was at his most Till like?

Hmm…When Rammstein was on the Family Values Tour, and he very excitedly asked … I think it was Ice Cube, if he wanted to hear the new song he was writing in English. He then proceeded to sing some version of Pussy for Ice Cube, who was apparently confused by the whole thing. This all gives us some idea of how long the rest of Rammstein fought him on it.

When he bought a failing zoo because he was worried the animals in it might miss one another. And then supposedly sang to them.

When he got into a slap fight with Eric Backman, and then tried to go easy on him because he’s nice. And then won the fuck out of it, because can you image getting slapped by those hands (no, not on the ass, stop it, you’re thinking about it, don’t think about it).

When he peed in public in the US, and then was really confused that he got arrested for it. The indignation on his face when he tells that story just kills me dead.

When Flake and Paul would regularly crash his house and eat all his food even thought they barely knew one another, and he apparently just sat back, like, “I guess we’re friends, then. This is my life now.”
