Found Quite An Interesting Article On Paul & Artie's Concert In Akron OH, July 1983.

Found quite an interesting article on Paul & Artie's concert in Akron OH, July 1983.

"Simon & Garfunkel packed Rubber Bowl in 1983" Couple of highlights:

"'Art and I haven’t resolved anything,' Simon said. 'What we’ve done is put them aside, at least temporarily. Although I suppose if you can extend temporarily long enough, maybe you have solved the problem.'"

(...)

"Garfunkel told reporters that getting back onstage stirred a lot of feelings. 'There are a lot of different emotions that go through the mind when we’re out there,' he said. 'Singing Old Friends with an old friend is something.'" Well, we know how it ended, but still I find it all rather sweet.

me: it's about monsters it's about those othered by society, it's about civilization and weaponized shame, it's about the power of controlling your own narrative and the devastation of it being taken away from you, it's about security vs freedom, compassion vs pragmatism, begging for admittance vs burning the house down, it's inevitability and foregone conclusions and the things we'll do for love. when the king brands us pirates, he doesn't mean to make us adversaries. he doesn't mean to make us criminals. he means to make us monsters.

guy who wanted to date me: oh yeah that's the uh, the pirate one right? yeah I saw some of that, it was pretty good

I agree, and I recommend listening to Wishbone.

A wishbone was broken,

I'm left holding the smaller part,

With words left unspoken,

They rattle round in my empty heart.

Help me start to lay this burden down

On the solid ground.

How many people hold the ones they love

Just like there's no tomorrow?

How many people know the turning hands of time

Are stronger than us all?

Time's always walkin',

I check my watch, you'd be forty-five,

It seems like God just ain't talkin',

I wish to God you were still alive!

Every night I wonder where you are

Holding half my heart…

How many people hold the ones they love

Just like there's no tomorrow?

How many people know the turning hands of time

Are stronger than us all?

All the days are gone, the nights go on…

Help me hear the words, "walk on"...

How many people hold the ones they love

Just like there's no tomorrow?

How many people know the turning hands of time

Are stronger than us all?

I wish I would have told you that

The air you breathe was everything...

The San Bernardino Sun, 6/17/79 (TW: Suicide)

One of the worst bits of “journalism” I’ve found while keyword searching for articles. Someone decided that the best way to report on Laurie Bird’s overdose (or rather, the best way to sell copies) would be to use her grieving father’s words to essentially blame Art for her death. The combination of factors at hand would’ve been nearly impossible for Art to bear even without that type of news report. Hesitating to marry again after the disaster of his first marriage and then having to carry that guilt forever, falling apart in Vienna while making a movie far too close to his soon-to-be reality, having to film the last scene of Bad Timing four days after her funeral—with all of that fresh in his mind on top of the shock and grief of losing her, it’s a wonder that he managed to pull himself out of the darkest period of his life. What a devastating situation for everyone involved, and what a despicable way to describe it in print.
