Conscientious gaze fixated onto the window of the taxi, you focus your attention on the wintry, alpine landscape that blurs past you. A heavy sheath of snow encapsulates the entire ground, from the snow-capped mountains looming in the distance, to the ligneous frames of the trees: whether their foliage still flourishes, or whether it had already abscised. Above you, the sky is a pale shade of beryl, and with nary a wisp of a cloud in sight, the unobscured daylight rains upon the niveous ground, causing the soft sheets of powdered snow to reflect the stark light.

With a muted sigh, you press your head against the glass. The sharp sensation of the gelid surface has a shiver shooting down your spine, causing you to burrow further into your puffy winter jacket. Having only arrived a few hours ago, you can’t say you’ve seen much of Austria yet; most of your experience consists of your exit from the airport, and then the lengthy drive towards the Austrian Alps. Still, from what you’ve seen from outside the window, you can tell it’s a beautiful country, and ordinarily, this would be a holiday destination you would have once jumped at the opportunity to visit. Yet, as you stare out at the midwinter scenery, all you can feel are the beginning ripples of dread sinking into the very foundation of your bones.

And for no other reason than the fact that you’d be spending this particular holiday with your ex-boyfriend.

PART ONE

Many years had passed since the last time the lone sorcerer, Mage Cian, stepped foot in the North.

For the mage had not been a huge fan of the cold weather. Despite his constant traveling when he is not leading the small community of White Witches and Warlocks that he had built for himself way in the East, he always chooses to stay away from the cold parts of the region, keeping it low and warm. Yet, he is risking it all today, as the North had always been known as the coldest part of the region. Particularly on times like now, when winter is near.

The cold temperature in the North is just starting to pick up as Mage Cian finally arrives at where he should be, letting him know that his time is almost up. He knows that he needs to make pace if he wants to make sure that everything will run according to what fate has planned.

There is no sign for the snow to arrive on this part of the land just yet, but the ground has already started to become frosty as the dead leaves and gravel crunch underneath his boots on his way to the edge of the forest. It doesn’t take him long before he emerges through the dense trees and finds himself staring at the rocky wall at the foot of the mountain. He continues his short walk just as the sky begins to grow darker, tracing the rocky hill until he is standing right at the mouth of a dark cavern that would soon be covered under a mountain of snow.

With no more time to waste, Mage Cian enters the cave with calm and grace, without making so much of a noise. Using his magic, he lights his way in to reach the heart of the cavern, making sure to get through the dark without disrupting the peace and quiet. He needs to tread his way in carefully if he wants things to go on without a hitch.

You brush your hands clean on your trousers before turning.

“Nothing.” You say sweetly, still hoping it was just a hunter from the city. You turn to look towards the intruder but there was no one there, and you immediately put your guard up. This didn’t bode well. No one was allowed into druid territory without their permission, and while they may show a human mercy, ‘demon spawn’ witches, such as yourself were usually killed on sight. You cursed inwardly. You’d thought you’d been so careful, with the anti-tracking spell you crafted, no druid should be able to track you.

You take a deep breath and decide to handle this the same way you handle most things. Stupidly.
