Tips for Reading with ADHD

(or without ADHD, if they help regardless)

Physical print:

cover the page with a piece of paper and reveal lines/paragraphs as you read them

use a highlighter to emphasize important/interesting parts

take notes as you go to be physically engaged with the material

Digital media:

copy and paste the text into a doc/word processor

change the font size/style/colour to something more legible

make your own paragraphs and spacing

copy and paste one paragraph at a time to isolate them from the distraction of the rest of the text

install a browser extension like BeeLine Reader or Mercury Reader

zoom in on the page and scroll slowly so you’re revealing lines as you read them

physically cover the screen and reveal lines as you read them

if you do better with physical media, print it out or find a physical copy

pace, move around, or use a fidget while reading

set a timer for 5 minutes and read in small chunks with breaks in between

divide the material into sections and read one section at a time with breaks in between

In the eyes of everyone else, I am female. But I know that I can be more than that. I've never stuck to male or female and I knew that I was either inbetween or fluid. Sure I have the parts which categorize me as female but I know that I am genderfluid. When I told my dad, he laughed. He laughed and asked me if he had a choice in the matter because he was my father. That was quite a few years ago. Now we aren't talking. He doesn't understand me and why I am the way I am. And that's okay. I'm much happier without him able to tell me that I'm wrong because he's "dad". I know it must be hard for him to understand and deal with the fact I'm not his baby girl anymore. But this is where we are right now.

My mother was far more supportive but doesn't get it either.

I'm afraid for my sibling because she came out as trans. I've always wanted a sister! Now the issue is dealing with dad again. I know its her and dad's conversation but I'm scared that dad will hurt them in some way to make them feel unsure. I guess I can only wait and support her.

I wanted to write this down and I thought it would be okay to put it here to show that it can go wrong too. That it can go very wrong.

I’m a cis-gender man which basically means that, when I was born, the doctor went “It’s a boy!” and when I was old enough to understand I agreed with him.

The thing is, I don’t know why I feel like a man.  I was teased and bullied for it a lot when I was little.  I’ve never had stereotypically American male interests.  I never cared about sports or cars or guns.  I was more interested in music and cooking and the arts.  I’ve always been emotionally in tune and sensitive, even when I did my best to suppress my emotions to survive a childhood of abuse from other children.

It’s not physical either.  I don’t feel like a man because I have a penis or a beard.  If you put my brain in a robot body or any other body, my essence would still feel male (I assume).  I literally can’t imagine what being any other gender would feel like, since I feel so acutely male.

I think that’s why the concept of being transgender always made sense to me.  I’m a man.  I don’t have any bloody clue why I feel like a man, but I don’t feel that it’s tied to my body or my interests or the way that I’ve been treated.  I feel like a man because of something beyond that.  Something ephemeral.  So, why couldn’t others feel the same?  Why couldn’t a person who’s been misidentified as a girl feel like a boy for the exact same nebulous reasons that I do?

And, since gender really doesn’t make any sense to me anyway, why couldn’t there also be people who feel as if they don’t have one?  Or who flow across genders like a ship on a map?

Are there people out there whose sense of their own gender is inseparable from their physical form?  If you put those people into robot bodies or, simply, other physically different bodies, would their gender identity also swap?  If so, why?  Are they actually more lost in their gender identity than I am and they need to hone in on the physical in order to anchor themselves?

Why do people feel like they are the gender that they are?

I'm from Hawaii currently living in the Midwest and I'm so very homesick. It might not be Hawaii but it brightened my day.

Grace had referred to the people in the avatar program as her kids more than once. Jokingly grounding someone for a dumb mistake or settling and argument like a tired mother.

It had become an inside joke that Grace adopted anyone in the program regardless of their age.

After the shooting at the school no one called her 'mom' or 'mother'. Knowing that her murdered students had once called her that.

Two years passed without anyone calling her Mother, no one wanted to remind her of what had happened, no one wanted to cause her any pain. Then two new avatar drivers arrived.

It was obvious that she had taken a liking to Norm the moment they met. The scrawny scientist had impressed the woman by formally introducing himself in Na'vi, trying his hardest to make a good impression on his idol.

And it seemed that Jake would be a thorn in her side. But only a few days after their arrival all three left the base, moving to a remote link site deep in the floating mountains.

No one knew exactly why they left. The only person who knew was Max, and he refused to tell anyone why.

Three months passed before anyone saw them in person again. Even then it was only briefly as Grace and Jake had linked hours later to try and save the Omatikaya from the RDA's attack.

They were forced to watch as Hometree fell and Grace was pulled from her link, screaming that Selfridge was a murderer.

That was the last time they saw her.

A day later Max was telling them that she was dead. That Quaritch had killed her, that Jake and the na'vi had tried to save her, that he was planning to attack and drive the RDA off the moon.

They all agreed right then and there to join the fight. To do whatever it took to win.

To avenge their Mother.
