For the character dynamic asks, between supporting characters - What secrets or conflicts exist between them?
Thanks for the ask, @mk-writes-stuff! I'll go with the cast of Song of Thorns (because I'm working on a chapter for it today/tomorrow!)
So, mild spoilers for those WIPs below the cut!
Between supporting characters - What secrets or conflicts exist between them?
Between Tarrant & The Twins - While there are next to no conflicts between them (except when Tarrant loses his patience at Dimya and Cyriel's recklessness lmao) there is a secret between them. Two actually (a secret Tarrant keeps from the twins and a secret the twins are keeping from him).
(Tarrant's Secret) - Tarrant hides from his cousins the fact that he is showing signs of being infected by the blood curse plague - for three reasons: 1. he is terrified of the Corvus, the royal alchemists tasked as plague doctors, as he knows the truth that the "salvation" the royal family promises plague victims is actually being used as magical experiments, 2. he does not want his younger cousins to worry about him, 3. he fears his boss (who holds his soul contract) is going to kill him or otherwise discard him (or hurt the twins) if the man finds out he is sick. As you can imagine, this has less-than-ideal consequences for him as the story progresses.
(The Twins' Secret) - As Lantern Keeper for a group of underworld mercenaries, Cyriel is plotting to find a way to overthrow/betray their leader and save Tarrant from his contract, which is a very tricky plan that backfires immensely when the mercenary leader finds out and makes Cyriel be framed for treason, caught by the local city guard and (unsuccessfully) sentenced to death. She doesn't tell Tarrant about her plan because she knows he will freak out - until he inevitably finds out either way. On the other hand, Dimya, her twin, is pretending to still be loyal to their leader (mostly because he is trying to continue Cyriel's plan in a moe subtle fashion but also because he is very much terrified of the situation they're stuck in), and has a secret he did not tell neither Cyriel (his twin) or Tarrant - he found out their boss was smuggling live, unfortunate vampires into a fighting ring and other dreadful places sponsored by the elite, but was so terrified by this discovery (and horrified that he was working for a man that would hurt so many innocent vampires for money) he didn't tell a single soul, fearing their leader would kill him for knowing more than he should, and is very much traumatized by it.
... So, basically, family communication issues at their finest.
Cadenza Novalie & her Dad - Cadenza is a young noble fey from the vampiric lands whose relationship with her Dad has become pretty strained in the past few years due to, mostly, a very bad misunderstanding. I can't go into much detail without spoiling an important plot twist but vaguely, the gist of the situation is: her Dad had to, secretly, make a tough decision in order to protect her, knowing that she would likely hate him or at least dislike him for it (it isn't anything too awful but from outsiders point of view it does look worse than it is) but would at least stay safe. They've become pretty distant since then, but still care for one another deeply and their relationship heals later on in the story once they get over this misunderstanding.
Elveryn Haven & The Main Cast (prior to his redemption arc):
As mentioned in a few other posts, Elveryn is a monster hunter tasked by the King to hunt and kill Renn (an adult dhampir) and arrest the rest of the main cast. This makes Elveryn a strong - and oftentimes terrifying - antagonistic force throughout the earlier acts of the book, as his thirst for revenge against all monsters (even good ones) makes him hunt down his targets relentlessly. So one could safely say that yes, there is a lot of conflict between them. And even after he starts to undergo his redemption arc while being forced to work with the main cast for a common goal, there is still a lot of tension between him and them (he considers them his enemies and they still haven't really forgiven him/still fear him for trying to hunt Renn, though they do find a common ground eventually and do become friends later into his redemption route).
The main cast only later finds out that the real motive for his hatred of monsters wasn't prejudice, but actually a thirst for revenge and grief over losing his little brother in a monster attack years ago, and the fact he - deep down - blames himself for not finding him. After his redemption arc, they make amends and finally become good friends, as he realizes the wrongs of his ways.
Renn Atrius & Prince Alaric:
While they technically are friends/allies from the very beginning and are on the same side of the book's conflict, there is some tension between them. Renn has a strong hatred and distrust for human nobility - as when Renn was a child, he witnessed his beloved Dad (Kyrie, a vampire) be murdered by a monster hunter sent by the royals - and Prince Alaric is a human noble - though they have a common goal of stopping the corruption of the royal family - so the distrust/tension is always ready to reappear on the back of Renn's mind in every single interaction, though they're mostly polite to each other they do have a bit of a mix between rivalry/friendship. To make things worse, Alaric has no idea of Renn's past trauma and sometimes is painfully oblivious (not on purpose, he is just not very perceptive in that way) to any signs of it, which creates a lot of rocky patches in their communication at times.

Art by me (@diabolical-blue)
Thanks for the tag @mysticstarlightduck! I have attempted to summarize this story and write bios for the characters scattered across several different posts and blogs, but I suppose it’s high time I just share one comprehensive, consolidated rundown of the whole project in one post. Reblogs are appreciated if any part of the story/characters/themes described below resonates with you. 💕

Sincere apologies for any double tags or if anyone tagged has already completed an intro post for each of their WIPs; I try to read and make mental notes of all the ones I come across, but I may have missed some. I do want to see everyone's WIP intro masterposts though, so I'm tagging a bunch to hopefully nudge people in that direction <3 If I didn't tag you but you still want to make a WIP intro post, please consider yourself tagged and make one anyway so I can see it!!

Title: Ambrosia Heights
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Drama
Target Audience: New Adult (18-30)
Tags: #ambrosiaheights
(Please note: Most official content for this project, such as character bios, are posted to my side blog @ambrosiaheights. I use the tag mentioned above primarily just on my main blog @diabolical-blue for tag games, ask games, miscellaneous art, excerpts, and random info related to the characters or story world.)
Progress: As of May 2024, I am currently 87% done writing the first draft of my manuscript (40 out of 46 chapters completed).
Synopsis/What is it about?
While visiting Ambrosia Heights, the old English manor house that belonged to her ancestors, ten-year-old Emmaline discovers a strange, blue-skinned elf child lost in the nearby orchard. After she helps him return to his own world, Emmaline thinks all magic has left her life for good – until an unlikely series of events twenty years later transports her, now thirty years old and disillusioned with her life as an adult, to that very world herself.
Tossed unprepared into an alternate universe filled with magic, monsters, and medieval-era problems, Emmaline’s immediate instinct is to return home through the portal in this universe’s version of the manor. But when she encounters someone she thought she would never see again – the elf child, who has grown up to become a seven-foot-tall blue-skinned behemoth named Gregorius – she feels compelled to stay long enough to help him resolve the treacherous situation he is facing, which she might even be responsible for.
At first, Emmaline thinks her shy, staunchly pacifistic, painfully naïve friend would be lost without her pragmatic support…but she soon finds it will take both of their strengths to navigate the secrets, mysteries, and apocalyptic perils of the adventure they embark upon together.
What is the setting?
Ambrosia Heights is a portal fantasy that starts out in a “real world” type of setting before the main character is transported to an alternate universe version of England which was ravaged by an apocalypse long ago and seems to have gotten “stuck” in medieval times - with a magical twist.
The inspiration for this setting primarily came from the idea of combining two of my favorite video game franchises, Fallout and Elder Scrolls (“what if the apocalypse happened in medieval times instead of a 1950’s-inspired retro-future?”) with my own original ideas tying the concept together. For example, although I love the mythology and magic system and fantasy races from the Elder Scrolls games, the magic system and fantasy elements in my story stem from a much different origin and hopefully result in a unique final product that is distinct from both of its inspirations.
Outside of the realm of video games, this book also took bits of inspiration from a variety of literary and film influences, including: The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Howl's Moving Castle, Jane Eyre, The Wizard of Oz, Once Upon A Time (TV show), Over the Garden Wall (TV show), Doctor Who (TV show), Pushing Daisies (TV show), Edward Scissorhands, Tangled, Beauty and the Beast, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996 Disney film).
Here’s a little sneak preview of what this story’s setting includes:
Technology and magic intertwined
Alternate history shenanigans
Subverted fairy tale tropes (a bald person stuck in a Rapunzel-esque situation, a non-wicked stepmother, etc)
A complicated spectrum of faction allegiances in which nobody is entirely “good” and nobody is entirely “bad,” but a whole lot of people are heavily misguided and jump to incorrect conclusions about the other side(s)
Four-eyed badger-like creatures, elk-like beasts who see through their antlers, forests with GIANT trees, a terrifying monstrosity lurking deep underground, and more!
What does the title mean?
Though many aspects of the alternate universe are unfamiliar to the main character, one thing that’s the same - or at least is in the exact same spot - is the Ambrosia Heights manor house, acting as a physical “anchor point” between dimensions and even helping the main character figure out she’s in an alternate universe in the first place (the exteriors of both houses look similar, but the interiors could not be more different).
Thematically, the meaning behind this title (and the meaning behind the in-fiction location name itself) refers to ambrosia from Greek mythology, the food of the gods which would supposedly grant immortality to any mortal who ate it. Immortality, longevity, curses/blessings in disguise, and even a bit of an Ancient Greek aesthetic are present in select parts of the book, making the title on-theme even after the characters leave the titular location behind to venture out on their cross-country quest.
Those familiar with classic literature might also notice similarities between my book’s title and the title of the Emily Brontë novel Wuthering Heights. I originally imitated this title solely because I liked how it sounded, but then I eventually read the book itself and noticed a lot of unintended thematic parallels with my story as well. Thus, I’m okay with my book being a vague homage to Wuthering Heights, even featuring my own take on a “beware the consequences of revenge” kind of theme. (Unlike Wuthering Heights, however, there’s no incest in my book. So no need to worry about that! 😂)
Content
The content in my writing is tuned to my own tastes; as such, there is little to no swearing, NO explicit sexual content (sometimes mild to moderate suggestive content, including romantic themes), mild non-denominational religious themes, and limited violence except for occasional moments of body horror and gore (only like, one or two scenes). Also worth noting is that any romance in this particular story is written entirely from the perspective of an asexual (but not aromantic) main character.
Though the “adult” content is fairly limited, this story does include plenty of mature themes and topics which may be triggering to some, including: child abandonment, family drama and generational trauma, mistreatment of neurodivergent people, aphobia, emotional abuse/neglect, depression, mentions of suicidal behavior, religious trauma, and assault/women in peril.

Cast of Characters
Emmaline
What was once a wide-eyed, optimistic young girl with a deep love for fantasy stories and fairy tales has become a jaded and cynical 30-year-old woman who is wholly disillusioned with her unfulfilling adult life. Despite yearning for a committed relationship more than anything else, she believes such a thing will never work out due to her lack of physical desires and aversion to touch. She is loyal to and protective of those she cares about, but can also be quite stubborn and hotheaded, lashing out with her fiery temper when provoked. She also struggles to forgive those who have wronged her, tends to hold grudges, and in extreme cases, might even seek revenge. Despite this, she has strong empathy for people she can relate to, particularly people who come from backgrounds of isolation or neglect like herself. Her greatest fear is that she will end up alone, although nothing is more likely to make this come true than her own self-isolating and self-sabotaging tendencies.

Gregorius
Gregorius is a seven-foot-tall elf sorcerer living in a world that generally despises both elves and magic users. However, he hasn’t let this affect his compassionate heart for others, his strong moral code, or his ardent determination to use his powers for good. He makes mistakes just like anyone else, but he tends to treat others how he would like to be treated and is highly forgiving, always willing to give others a second chance no matter what they have done. His intimidating stature, appearance, and magical abilities tend to drive others away, but those who take the time to get to know him will discover a sweet, gentle, somewhat naïve man who is always happy to make a new friend. He is fiercely loyal to those he cares about, but unfortunately, this can sometimes leave him vulnerable to manipulation and abuse if the other person has a mind to take advantage of his unconditional devotion and trust. Not unrelated to that last point, he has spent most of his life locked in a stone belltower on the grounds of the old abbey-turned-boarding-school Gravehurst Hall at the behest of his guardian, who claims her only concern is for his safety. His heart’s deepest desire is to move on from his confining situation, find a lifelong partner, and start a family - the family he always wanted to be a part of when he was growing up. At this point, he doesn’t believe that is very likely to happen, although a small part of him still clings to the hope that his dream could come true someday.

Felix
No story is complete without a lovable animal sidekick! Felix is a type of creature known as a denstalker, whose size and personality are both in between that of a dog and a cat. His black-and-white fur is similar to the coloration of a badger or a skunk, and he has four big round black eyes reminiscent of a jumping spider. He starts following the main characters fairly early on and quickly becomes part of the “family” for the rest of the book.

Jasper Maddock
As mayor of Haven Hill, one of the few towns in the Alderwild that is friendly to both elves and humans, Jasper is used to having a lot of responsibility on his shoulders to keep the peace. He prides himself on being proficient in magic, treating humans and his fellow elves equally, and being able to put just about anyone’s skills to good use in his well-organized township. With a sarcastic sense of humor and a bit of a lovable arrogant streak, Jasper is the benevolent if firm leader his people always wanted after suffering under the much more tyrannical dictator of the elven kingdom. In fact, most of his citizens are so satisfied with Jasper’s leadership, they are willing to completely overlook the potentially suspicious circumstances in which he rose to power...
—
Bronwyn Sanders
Bronwyn is the younger sister of Haven Hill’s mayor, Jasper (Sanders is her married name). Quite knowledgeable about the arcane arts, Bronwyn teaches magic at the town’s school, although she doesn’t get a lot of opportunities to use her skills outside of an educational setting anymore. She used to go adventuring with her fiancé, but in the aftermath of his death, she considers those days to be gone for good. Currently, she enjoys spending her free time baking and caring for animals, particularly the two steeds in her stables. She is also responsible for her chronically ill adult nephew Peter, who lives with her on their quiet homestead by the river.
—
Adelaide Alwyn
For such a petite and unassuming woman, Adelaide is easily one of the most intimidating people one might encounter in the Alderwild. Not only is she the Headmistress in charge of the prestigious boarding school Gravehurst Hall, she is also highly respected in the political landscape of the region, acting as an impartial and trusted host and moderator whenever the Wardens meet. In fact, with an even number of regional leaders in this council, it’s oftentimes her influence that ends up casting the tie-breaking vote. Some might see that as a rather alarming amount of power for one woman, especially one so emotionally cold and secretive about her past, to wield. But surely such a pious and respectable woman such as herself wouldn’t take advantage of a position of power like that. Right?
—
Dominicus
The much-feared and reviled king of the elves. Not much is known about Dominicus, especially outside of the closed-off and totalitarian elven kingdom. The only evidence of his legacy outside of the kingdom is the citizens of Haven Hill, many of whom risked everything to flee from his tyrannical rule.

Song Inspirations
This isn't a comprehensive list, but here's a collection of songs that remind me of some aspect of the story or even helped inspire certain parts, whether by way of the lyrics, the melody/instruments, or both. (Some songs I just like the sound and I think it fits the vibe, regardless of the lyrics or the song's original context.)
Also, these are roughly in chronological order for which parts of my book they would be relevant to. (Except for the first one, which is relevant to the whole thing.)
Hardest of Hearts - Florence + The Machine Goes On and On - Sleeping at Last Linger Longer - Cosmo Sheldrake X&Y - Coldplay Ghosts - Sleeping at Last Wasteland, Baby! - Hozier Pruned - Natalie Holt We Can’t Breathe - Future of Forestry Covers You - Future of Forestry Weights & Measures - Dry the River The Singing Towers - Murray Gold By Being With You - Cosmo Sheldrake Just Come Inside - Murray Gold
Bonus: A song whose vibes strongly remind me of the backstory for two important side characters...Loki Green Theme - Natalie Holt
— 🌹 —
And finally, a quote from the book:

(The original context of this quote refers to the main character's frustrations with the incorrect/hurtful assumptions others make about her priorities, relationships, and desires as an asexual person. In a broader sense, however, this quote can also apply to anything that makes someone feel alienated from others, including but not limited to their sexuality, neurotype, gender, appearance, religious preferences, background, financial status, living situation, or really anything that leaves them feeling like they don't fit in with others. This isn't a "look at me, I'm so special" attention-seeking statement. It's an expression of genuine frustration and solidarity with everyone who knows what it's like to feel isolated or excluded due to factors beyond their control.)

Late Writeblr Intro!
Hello, friends!
I figured it was about time I made an actual blog intro of my own since I forgot to make one when I started this blog last year. Better late than never, lmao!
Pls, reblog, like, and/or reply to help boost the blog! 💕
Let's get started:
Personal Stuff! 💜🩶🖤
My name is Anna/Anya but you can call me Mystic, Ducky, or just Anya on this blog! My personal nickname is Ani and I adore it (:
I am an Asexual woman (my pronouns are she/her!) and I'm also personally an atheist who puts my faith in the spirits of Mother Nature, though I respect all other religions equally!
I'm Gen Z and Latina (Brazilian). I was raised bilingual (Brazilian Portuguese + English) and I love learning languages - currently, I'm working on learning French and Spanish! Career-wise I am studying in college to become a character designer and hopefully animator, as I want to pursue a career as an artist and writer! I also wish to have my WIPs published in the near future (:
Some fun facts about me!
My favorite shows are Critical Role, Game of Thrones, Castlevania, The Legend of Vox Machina (animated series), Star Wars, Voltron, The Dragon Prince, Avatar the Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, and DC Comics content, as well as many more lmao. I love watching movies and series!
My favorite Vox Machina characters are Vax'ildan and Percy (:
I am a younger sister 💖
My hair is short and curly (pixie style, similar to the haircut Rapunzel has at the end of the Tangled movie!)
I adore listening to music, especially songs that can inspire me to write my WIPs! Playlists are a huge part of my writing process and something I really enjoy making.
I'm currently rereading Shadow and Bone (+ Six of Crows) and I am always looking for more good dark fantasy/historical fantasy books to read so book recs are always welcome! I also am a huge fan of the Percy Jackson series and Trials of Apollo (by Rick Riordan), though I'm usually more of a gritty/dark fantasy fan (like Game of Thrones)!
I have three dogs and two cats!😺🐶
I know how to play the piano, though I haven't done that in a while because things have been chaotic for me, but I'd like to start playing regularly again in my winter vacation.
I have worn glasses since I was 5 years old and have terrible eyesight without them (and some days with them, lol, so bear with me).
My friends and I are doing a DnD campaign every Sunday, where I play as a half-elf rogue named Aeryn (he/him). I'm adoring this adventure so far, it's so fun!!!
I love to bake and am rather good at it, but am a painfully average cook lmao (some specific recipes I make are actually rlly good, but it depends a lot on my mood and the 'alignment of the stars' lol)
I want to learn how to knit/crochet! 🧶
I'm a theater nerd and love musicals (:
About my Writing!🏹⌛
I write fictional works mostly in the genre of fantasy (high fantasy/epic fantasy/dark fantasy/historical fantasy/urban fantasy, etc. You name it!) and science fiction (space opera/cyberpunk/superhero, etc).
My works usually revolve around themes such as epic quests, secrets, adventure, rebels fighting an oppressive system, sibling bonds, acceptance/respect, outcasts, and much, much more! I love fluff and whump equally, and though my stories tend to focus on serious topics (or at least darker/heavier themes) within a fantasy/sci-fi setting, I like to have a good bit of humor, lighthearted fun, and comedy to my stories to lighten up the mood!

I have a few other smaller-scale WIPs I occasionally, less frequently work on, such as Lies Untold and Jade Ruins, but those up above are the main ones that I wish to publish. I've also got a big, secret extra WIP I'm working on for fun and will share it with you guys soon!
I've been writing... Sporadically with the process of editing. Nothing has seemed to stick for making me stay on task. Except for one thing. The pomodoro method calls for one to use a kitchen timer or something similar as a time tracker, and that's been magical to have a device that ticks down the time like my new red fox buddy I picked out. His name is Stormy (time, tempus, tempest, Stormy; it makes sense to me anyway).
But I have something on the horizon sure to kickstart my creativity. The second heartbeat of this blog, my dear friend @mysticstarlightduck , has gotten me into my very first dungeons and dragons game with her. I've wanted to play for years and now I can. The math and statistics are going to be a lot for me to track and I hope I'm up for it, but my beloved halfling warlock I've had waiting for over a decade has a chance to spread her... Uh, toes? She doesn't have wings, so...
That's my update for you fine folks. I'll be trying to report less inconsistently with progress as I make more of it.
Two Truths One Lie
Thanks for the tag, @willtheweaver (here)!
I'll go with Elveryn Haven, from Song of Thorns, the relentless but traumatized monster hunter who was tasked by the King to hunt down and kill Renn (and bring the others to 'justice').

🌙 - If given the chance, what is one thing about their life your OC would change permanently?
Thank you so much for the ask, @kaylinalexanderbooks!
I'll go with a few of my OCs from some of my WIPs for variety (:
(The Tag Game)
🌙 - If given the chance, what is one thing about their life your OC would change permanently?
(Of Starlight and Beasts)
Corah - She would like to have a better mother, one who wouldn't purposefully ruin their family name, and most importantly one who wouldn't simply walk out on her and her father at the first opportunity.
Eidan - He would like to prevent the siege of Monbern from happening. The Siege of Monbern was marked by terrible bloodshed and the deaths of many innocents, but it was also the day Eidan himself lost a lot of his old life (his cousin, his reputation, etc).
Arammys - He would probably make it so his memories weren't stolen. A lot of his current hurts and insecurities come from the fact that he knows nothing of his past, of who he was before losing his memories, all except his name.
Masen - Secretly, he'd probably go back in time and try to prevent him and his twin from falling apart. Part of why he currently hates Kyran so much is that Masen also blames himself but doesn't want to admit it. Plus, he'd probably try to prevent the execution that made their brother an undead.
Kyran - Kyran believes he has betrayed his family because the choices he made - and the sides he took as a teen - ultimately did lead to him and his brothers falling apart and Elias getting executed, even if indirectly. He'd try to go to the past and fix things.
(Song of Thorns)
Roselyn - A part of Roselyn would like to go back in time and make it so that she, Jasen, and Portia never moved to the capital. However, then her life would've stayed the same as it was before, which she doesn't want either. So the only thing I think she'd change is that they would still go to the capital but she would find a way to keep Jasen from going missing.
Alaric - Even though Alaric is a prince, he did not have many friends, so I think if he could change one thing about his life he would love to have a childhood friend he could truly trust and rely on, a bond he never had.
Portia - She wouldn't change anything about her life, instead I think that if Portia could change anything about the world she would make it so every stray dog and cat had a good and loving home and that all wild animals were safe.
Renn - Renn would probably change his life so that people didn't think he was a monster and should be killed just because they didn't understand his magic or his vampiric traits. He'd also probably try to save his dad from being betrayed by the nobles.
Jasen - He'd try to escape the nobles faster or to try and find a way to not get caught, though that'd be pretty difficult. I think would also have liked to have been able to afford more things his sisters wanted when they were kids.
Oriana - I don't think Oriana would change anything about her life honestly! She loves her immortal adoptive mother, has amazing forest friends, and has her magic, Oriana is pretty satisfied with her life as is I think!
(Enchanted Illusions)
Augustus - I think he'd like his Wizard Trials to not have gone so wrong - if that hadn't happened he wouldn't have been humiliated by his peers, he wouldn't have lost his studies and reputation and most importantly, he wouldn't have made the deal he has made with the Deathbringer, which he regrets.
Harriet - She'd probably want people to respect her cousin more - despite their wealth, some of the other nobles consider them "outsiders" and often make snide comments. She'd also like to make the nobleman Liam stop pursuing her romantically when she said she wasn't interested, instead of trying to court her at all costs.
Sam - Sam would like to make sure all his debts are paid so that he can finally leave the industrial hell that is Strystead and try to find a better life back at Ansburke. He'd also like to be able to afford any food he and his siblings wanted.
Evangeline - She'd want to go back in time and prevent her father from marrying Lady Ophelia. Her stepmother was a scourge in their lives throughout her childhood and a very abusive woman. Evie would like to never have met her.
Cailean - He would go back to when he was ten and stop himself from being frozen in fear when the Hemlock Society drowned his older brother - he would've liked to be able to have saved him instead of having just watched in fear from afar.
