the absolute best dynamic to read/write about is between 1 person who is so good at performing and wearing masks that they don’t know who they really are and 1 person who cannot be anyone but their most excruciatingly authentic self at all times and sees right through them; the mirrorball and the one who is not like the regulars, so to speak

my favorite gansey trait is his infinitely complex relationship with death. he regularly relives his death in panic attacks. he adventures out in rural virginia where a single wasp sting could end it all without fear. he knows he’s dying this year months in advance but never once considers using glendower’s wish for his life. he constantly chews mint—a hornet repellent. he only keeps one epi-pen in his car. he plans for his future death by giving up his home. he fights for his life when whelk holds him at gunpoint. he thinks—at least partially—that all his friends prefer other people. he’s terrified to his core when faced with robobee or the wasps in the cave. glendower was dead. and gansey kind of wanted to live.

part of what makes tragedies tragic is the story being preventable from the outside but unpreventable from the inside

obviously i believe that lgbt actors should have equitable access to jobs. but purely as a viewer, i honestly don't care if an actor in a gay role is gay. that's not enough for a project to be "good representation" in my book. because there are lgbt actors who have acted in homophobic/transphobic media, and there are cis straight actors who have portrayed lgbt characters with compassion, and then there's also everything in between. rami malek could come out as gay tomorrow and it wouldn't make bohemian rhapsody any less homophobic because the movie is homophobic regardless. heath ledger was straight (as far as we know), but brokeback mountain is no less heartfelt. to me, an authentic performance starts being made possible with the script, then the producer, director, and so on. but most importantly, i wish more people would ask what a piece of media or story is trying to say about lgbt people. that's way more important than the identities of anyone involved. is it being made with compassion? with empathy? with humanity? with care? that's the questions that should be asked BEFORE asking whether the performer is gay! because i promise you if the script is homophobic garbage, one actor's identity won't save it!

i think about how insane and heady it would be to be gansey and realize how much power he has over ronan alllll the time like. “ronan,” and he immediately backs off of blue. “ronan, feet down.” and his feet immediately come down. even when it’s something ronan doesn’t want to do, something he resists, all he has to do is point at him and eventually he’ll give in. a power usually reserved for master and dog, and he holds it over his friend who is maybe also kind of a god.
