@giftober 2024| Day 8: "home"
"I want to go home. Maybe home is nothing but two arms holding you tight when you are at your worst. Home is a person. Home is people. If you go back there after the people are gone, then all you can see if what is not there anymore. The ache for home lives in all of us." (x)

Interviewer: Do you embed a philosophical message in your work consciously or do you discover it, if there is one, as you go along?
George: I hate to use the word message, but there are a lot of thoughts in my books. You can find them, but they’re not just one... I think it was one of the great Hollywood tycoons of the mid-20th century who famously said “If you have a message use Western Union.”. You don’t want simplistic message fiction, but you do want fiction that makes people think... Some of my characters have very contrasting worldviews and I have noticed that if you go on the internet and enter my name and “quotes”, you’ll find “20 George R.R. Martin quotes”, “50 George R.R. Martin quotes”, “103 George R.R. Martin quotes”. You go through most of these and what you’ll notice is that only a handful of them are actually George R.R. Martin quotes. Some are Tyrion Lannister quotes. Or Jaime Lannister quotes. Or Cersei Lannister quotes: “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.”. It’s Cersei who said that... Do I believe that? Me? I’m so innocent, would I say anything as cynical and dark as that? … You have to decide this for yourself, but the author is not necessarily the character.
