This scene right here is the most important scene to be shown for Unlimited Blade Works yet.

Emiya Shirou is not simple, he is not a moron, and most importantly, he is not normal, even for a Magus.

Emiya Shirou longs to be a Hero of Justice, because it is the only thing he understands. Saving people to Emiya Shirou is as natural as breathing to you or I.

No enjoyment, no satisfaction. Only the impulsive reflex to Save others.

This is why Shirou refuses to stand behind while others fight. To do so is literally unthinkable to him.
