You were eighteen when the mark appeared on the right side of your hip. A star.

Some call it 'the soulmate mark', some call it 'the forever mark', some call it 'the love mark', there are various names for it.

You never called it anything in particular, though. When you became familiar with the concept of soulmates and the mark, you just thought all of these names stand true and are applicable, hence couldn't choose just one.

You see, the mark, that you're talking about, helps you identify your soulmate. What was somewhat astonishing to you was the fact that this mark is unique to each pair of soulmates. You remember thinking that it was impossible. There are seven billion people in the world which means 3.5 billion unique marks. However, you gave up on that calculation when you learned that these marks are never recycled.

There is no fixed age for when this mark will appear. It's always in black ink and can be often mistaken as a tattoo. Some are born with it but in most cases, it appears out of nowhere. The mark can appear anywhere on your body. From a wave right under the eye to a butterfly behind the ear, you have seen it all.

The various types of marks used to make you very curious as to what yours will look like. Your wondering mind would often lead you to more questions. When the mark will appear? Will the area of the mark burn? If it does, would it be a nice burn or an annoying intolerable kind of burn?

Your younger self just couldn't wait for the mark to show up. So, when the five-point star appeared on your skin, you were elated.

With the mark appearing, the previous questions were answered. There was no burn whatsoever, it appeared just like that, you didn't feel a single thing.

But that didn't get you rid of questions because soon after that, brand new questions started popping up in your mind.

What happens now? Who is your soulmate? When and how will you meet your soulmate? What is he like? Does he have the same preferences as you or is he completely different?

You didn't have to wait long to find the answers.

You were walking through the gate of your university when you spotted Jungkook a few metres away from you. He was laughing with his head thrown back and that's when you spotted the exact same star on his collarbone.

Not to be dramatic but it felt like the entire world stopped spinning.

Jungkook is your soulmate.

You stood there like a statue for some time wondering how you should mention to him that you have the same mark, but your thoughts couldn't go any far because another realisation clicked into place.

“Enough.” Her stern look silences you more than her words. “I will hear no more of this. You will attend the annual charity gala in two days, where you and Jung Hoseok will meet and then in a month, announce your plans to wed. The matchmaker gave you the list, and you looked over each profile. Taemin reviewed all of the portfolios of every man you have met with. He said Jung Hoseok is the last one on the list. So you will make it work. End of discussion.” And with the finality of her words, she looks away from you, turning back to her computer and the ledger planted on the desk, eyes darting between the two.

You stand up from the chair opposing her desk, eyes brimming with unshed tears. It has been years since you had uttered these words at her, probably hadn’t said them since you were a tiny child, but at this moment, where she had just stripped you of your ability to choose for your own future, you hurl the words.

“I hate you.”

Your mother didn’t even look up at you.

“Close the door on the way out, Y/N. Get some sleep, it’s late.”

I really love enemies to lovers but find it hard to balance the enemies and lovers bit, I mean you don’t want to make what they’ve done unforgivable, but it also needs to be enough to make them enemies – I hope I have achieved this. Anyway, I hope you’re all having the best last month of 2021!!!

“She seems like a bit of a bore.”

You stop dead before you enter the kitchen, your large panda mug and bag of instant coffee dangling in your hands. It’s the words that make you stop, it feels like it isn’t a conversation you shouldn’t walk in on, but you don’t move away, just stand hidden behind the door for a second deliberating on what you should do; stay or leave.

“How can you gauge that from one conversation?” A different voice asks.

“You just get a vibe from some people. I mean, look at her clothes.”

There’re a few light chuckles indicating that more than two people are in the room.

“You’re as dumb as you look,” a deep voice that you recognise grumbles. “It’s her first day. You can’t just get a vibe from someone that easily.”

“She’s a bore,” the original voice states.

“She’s quiet and shy, there’s a difference,” the deep voice replies.
