One thing I think a lot of people either don’t realize or gloss over is that Dazai didn’t force Akutagawa to join the PM. It’s shown in “The Heartless Cur” that he gave Akutagawa the option of being provided with enough money to start a relatively normal life for himself and Gin.

It was Akutagawa’s choice to turn that offer down and ask Dazai to give him a purpose. Was he in a good headspace to make a major decision like that? Absolutely not, don’t get me wrong. But still, he wasn’t forced into it.
