Roleplaying Terms for Tumblr Writers

After receiving some asks about terms used by the roleplaying community on Tumblr (and struggling to understand them all myself when I was first starting out), I have decided to put together something to help those who might be a bit confused or would like a list for reference purposes. These are just the terms I know, so feel free to reblog and add any I may have missed if you like! =)

General Roleplaying Terms

RP – Roleplay

RPing – Roleplaying

RPer – Roleplayer

RPG – Roleplaying game

Admin – From “administrator,” referring to those who manage RP communities and established games that require moderators or screenings/auditions for new roleplayers.

Mun – From “mundane.” The roleplayer, the author/writer of the character.

Muse – The character written by the mun, whether a canon character or OC. In Greek mythology, the Muses encouraged writers and artists by infusing them with inspiration for their craft, so this term reflects the fact that for many of us, our characters inspire creativity.

Thread – The trail of reblogs that is your RP with at least one other mun. Can also just refer simply to the story you have been writing with another mun, regardless of how many reblogs or new posts it took to create it.

Indie – From “independent.” A roleplayer not associated with a larger roleplaying community or already established RPG and who is roleplaying a character of their own separate creation, whether it is a canon character or an original one, rather than one created for them by an admin

Character-Related Terms

Canon – Information, ships, and events established by the source material (the book, movie, game, etc.) the character originated from, and not created or elaborated upon by the mun.

Canon character – A character written true to the source material it came from, rather than one that is elaborated on or altered by the mun.

Headcanon – An elaboration of a canon character by the mun not present in the character’s source material, but that they believe to the point of it being canon in their own head. For example, a belief that certain events happened in the character’s life or that the character holds certain beliefs that was not discussed in the source material.

FC – “Face claim,” the visual representation of the muse. Often this is for an OC or a character where an actor/actress or piece of art from the source material is not available for the mun to use for promotions, icons, edits, etc. Usually a celebrity who represents visually what the mun wants the character to look like.

OOC – “Out of character,” meaning the writing is the mun speaking and not the muse, or that the information may be outside information the muse does not know or have, but might still be about the character. Can also be information that does not concern the character at all, such as the mentioning of events in the mun’s own life or their unrelated thoughts about something.

IC – “In character,” meaning the writing is the muse speaking, or that the information is something the muse knows or is from their point of view. Often written in first person in the character’s voice.

Ship – From “relationship,” meaning one between two muses. This often refers to a romantic relationship, but can also be platonic or otherwise if the mun specifies, such as “I ship our muses as friends.” Can be canon or not.

OTP – “One true pairing,” usually meaning that one ship you love/promote so hard and fast above the rest that it’s your favorite.

Roleplaying Thread Terms

Verse – From “universe,” designating the world, setting, or set of circumstances specific to that RP thread. Rules and circumstances established in one verse may not apply to any other on the RPer’s blog for their character. Each verse is usually a separate world or story, except in the case of crossovers.

Crossover – A roleplay that brings together two previously separate threads (that may merge events or groups of characters into one plot), or one that involves characters from two different fandoms.

AU – An “alternate universe,” in which much of the canon material might stay the same but for a few changes; for example, changing the setting of the story (to a different place or time maybe), or altering one event in the plot or the character’s life (such as, what if they had not died/left/decided to do this at this point) and exploring how things would have been different with those changes; it can also refer to the different verses a mun has with their characters, especially if they maintain that each of their character’s ships are in a separate verse or AU.

Crack/Crackship/Crack AU – An unusual situation, relationship, or alternate universe involving characters that probably would never happen given the source material for canon muses or the mun’s conception of their OCs. Can involve meeting under odd circumstances or reacting to unusual circumstances, often resulting in a humorous RP. Not canon.

Writing Terms

Para – From “paragraph.” Writing that describes your character’s RP story with another mun’s character. Usually a few paragraphs long, but some RPers write more.

Sample para – Writing for an audition for a RPing community or RPG. This helps the admins determine whether you have captured the essence of the character in your writing or not. Usually this is for a character made by admins, not by the specific mun.

Self para – Writing containing only the muse and no other characters, or at least all characters written by the same mun. No one would reblog or reply to this, it is merely a creative outlet for the mun to develop their character’s thoughts, actions, and beliefs on their blog.

Meta – An in-depth analysis of your characters thoughts and/or motivations, usually of long length.

Through the veil of her tears, Lucette sees Deacon offer her a handkerchief, taking it from him gingerly and wiping away her tears. She could already that venomous voice waking up in her cage, no doubt woken up by her torment.

“I know I shouldn’t, Deacon, but it’s Edward. I still despise him for what he did and want to make him suffer for it but you know how how us humans are. After that disaster of a betrothal three years ago, I am just scared. There are not many human royals in the Spiral and not too many human nobility. What if I cannot find someone compatible?” She worries, her old fears popping up once again. When she and Edward had been betrothed to each other as children and grew up together, she had naively thought that he was her Prince Charming from fairy tales. Now all of those old feelings were coming back to bite and they were biting hard.

Lucette’s eyes widen when she hears that Uncle Kane was regretting the argument between them, a small smile appearing on her face. 

“I do too. I just feel like...After Edward, Uncle promised me that he would not force me to marry anyone as long as I did choose someone by the time I am crowned Queen. I just feel like Uncle is going back on his word.”

The Armada’s Emissary has noticed his creator’s questionable behavior as of late. He witnessed his short-temper earlier this morning while they were discussing important matters. Every time Deacon spoke to Kane, he found the Commander’s responses to be rash and unusually rushed. Reactions he rarely had - unless something has agitated him as of late.

While walking down one of the hallways, he finds Lucette heading in his direction. Deacon decides to stop Valencia’s princess by holding his cane out in her way, ensuring he had her full attention. Whatever was bothering Kane was likely on her behalf - she’d been causing nothing but trouble to both the Elite and Valencia lately.

“What have you done now?” He asks, not bothering to clarify himself.

Does Lucette have some sort of mental illness? I ask because of the "Venomous Voice", which could be an auditory hallucination.

She does have some mild anxiety that stems from being thrown into the Crown Princess role at a young age and gets anxiety attacks rarely whenever something absolutely terrible happens to those close to her (Like her parents’ deaths) but the Venomous Voice is...something else entirely. I don’t know how to explain it without spoiling it since it won’t be revealed for a few more chapters but I will say that...she is real. She is there but in a way that is difficult for us to comprehend. She is one thing that sort of adapted into another role for a somewhat logical reason that will be explained later on in the story.

I know this doesn’t quite answer your question but I do hope that it gives you an idea of what is going on. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes and Kane definitely has a large hand in it all. And yes, Kane does know about it. Can he fix it? That, my friend, is what we will find out.
