I Dont Shop On Holidays, Period. And My Friends Give Me Shit For This, Because They Dont Understand--if

I don’t shop on holidays, period. And my friends give me shit for this, because they don’t understand--if everyone would do their goddamn shopping beforehand (and actually anticipate their own needs) some poor bastard wouldn’t have to be working at the grocery store on Christmas Eve. I haven’t worked retail for years, but I still remember the last time I was stuck working Christmas Eve at the grocery store, where the phone kept ringing an hour after we closed, every time someone asking “Are you still open?” whilst I tried to balance my till and make the deposit. 

So no. Don’t ask me to stop for *cool whip*, *ice*, *cigarettes*, *wine*, or anything else, because I WILL. NOT. be shopping. It’s not like holidays suddenly snuck up on you, you knew it was coming. Fill the car with gas beforehand. 

People always gloss over how mentally damaging it can be to work in retail. I fucking hate that whenever I say “I could never work in retail again” someone has to reply “You snowflake millennials can’t take a starter job because you have to INTERACT with other people” No. Fuck you. I’ve worked as a planetarium host. I’ve worked as a public speaker. I’ve worked as a tutor and as a student teacher. I can work with people. I can work with crowds. Retail was fucking different. Retail was being treated as a subhuman. Retail was being treated so poorly that you have anxiety attacks before work. Having to work retail was a factor in my last suicide attempt. If I hear you say one fucking word about retail workers playing the victim I will personally break every bone in your body. Fuck You.

I’ve noticed, the last few days as the temperature has steadily dropped that my appetite is kicking into Cold Weather Mode. 

Warm weather appetite; “Ahh, a salad would be nice, maybe a bit of fish and fruit.”

Cold weather appetite; “Okay, brain, we’re cranking up the metabolism because it’s cold out, so tell the stomach that we want STARCH and BUTTER and we want it RIGHT NOW.” 

The mnemonic I learned for this was “Kings Play Chess On Freighters Going South” and there definitely wasn’t a word on there for Domain. Which seems weird 

Flashback to high school biology, anyone? Or even earlier, for some of us! I do love a good mnemonic, and this is probably one of the most common in natural history. There are, of course, other variants, and lots of them; I found a whole list at http://www.mnemonic-device.com/biology/taxonomy/domain-kingdom-phylum-class-order-family-genus-species/.  Not pictured: other divisions like subphylum, tribe, etc.

(Also, Dear King Phillip forgot to include himself in the Five Great Species!)
