Swaying Hearts

It had been a few days since Ichigo had discovered the truth about Ryou’s past. Of course he had tried to blow it off like it was nothing, but Ichigo still found it hard to look at him or say anything to him, until now. She needed to say something, and she wasn’t going to let her embarrassment get in the way this time.

It was evening and the sun was beginning to set; there was a bench not far outside the cafe where Ryou sat watching the sun fall below the tree line. Ichigo took a deep breath before approaching; she couldn’t let herself turn into a cat again from getting overly emotional. She paused behind the bench.

“Shir - “ Ichigo hesitated, “Ryou.” Ryou turned his head to glance over his shoulder.

“You’re using my first name now?” His tone was serious, but he was smiling.

“Uh,” Ichigo faltered for a moment. “Is that ok?” She asked unsure as she moved to the other side of the bench to sit. Ryou shook his head, still smiling.

“It’s always been ok for you to call me that.” Ichigo couldn’t help but smile back. They were quiet for a moment, Ichigo momentarily forgetting what it was she was planning to say, lost in Ryou’s gaze until he turned it back toward the setting sun. Ichigo turned her own eyes to the tree line and cleared her throat.

“I wanted to apologize to you, Ryou.” Ryou smiled again.

“Didn’t I tell you not to feel sorry for me?”

“You did,” Ichigo nodded. “But I feel bad that I didn’t ask you about it sooner…” Ryou raised an eyebrow, turning away from the scenery.

“Ask about it?”

“I mean, we’ve been friends for a while now, and I’ve always wondered why you live alone, and where your parents were, but,” Ichigo bit her lower lip. “I guess I was too afraid to know the answer, and now that I know, I feel bad for not knowing sooner because I feel like I could have understood you so much better if I had known sooner…” Ichigo sheepishly turned her head; Ryou was looking at her seriously.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.” He finally said. “I didn’t want you to pity me.” Ryou’s blue eyes were intense, but sad. Ichigo could hear her own heart pounding in her ears, she tried to steady her breathing, but the more she stared at Ryou’s eyes, the harder her heart pounded. Ryou frowned, averting his gaze again. Ichigo took the opportunity to calm the rhythm of her heart.

“I don’t pity you,” Ichigo shook her head. “I just feel like a bad friend for not trying to get to know you better.” The corner of Ryou’s mouth twitched.

“Friend?” He turned his head slightly so Ichigo could see his slanted smile. “Is that what we are?” Ichigo’s heart skipped a beat. She was suddenly aware of Ryou’s proximity; had she always been sitting that close to him? Their legs were just an inch away from each other, both had a hand resting on top; Ichigo could just extend her pinky, and it would touch the back of Ryou’s hand. She tried to swallow back her elation, but it was getting stuck in her throat, and her heart continued to pound. Ryou shifted his body, closing the gap between their legs so they were now pressed against each other, and (as if he had read her mind) he extended his pinky to brush the back of Ichigo’s hand; without thinking, she moved her hand closer, and soon their fingers were entwined. Ryou leaned in closer, his face so close Ichigo could feel his breath on hers; it seemed just as unsteady as her own. “What would you do if I kissed you?” Ryou asked surprisingly smoothly in spite of his erratic breathing and thumping heart (was it her own heartbeat she was hearing, or was she hearing Ryou’s too?). Ichigo tried to answer calmly.

“Probably turn into a cat.” Ryou laughed out loud (causing Ichigo to jump), and then rested his forehead against Ichigo’s shoulder, his chuckle warming the skin on her arm. Ichigo felt a strange tingling sensation in her body. She attempted to take deep breaths, staring at the dying light, praying she wouldn’t lose control of her form. Ryou sighed, moving his face up so the tip of his nose trailed along the side of Ichigo’s neck, up to her ear, where he stopped to press his lips to her cheek. Ichigo involuntarily squeezed Ryou’s hand, trying to keep herself in human form.

“0 for three, I guess…” Ryou sighed. Ichigo could feel the heat from her own blush, fogging her brain.

“Huh?” Was all she could respond. Ryou shook his head.

“Nothing, I’m just not as bold as I think I am.” Ichigo still couldn’t make sense of what he was saying, and not seeing his facial expression wasn’t helping, but if she turned her head at all, she’d really lose control. Ichigo felt something brush her ear, except it didn’t feel like it was in the right spot. Ryou chuckled again. “Your ears…” Ichigo jolted with realization, and shot her hands up to cover her fuzzy cat ears; Ryou’s hands caught hers before they could reach the top of her head. He pulled them down slowly, holding them close to his chest; Ichigo could really feel Ryou’s hammering heart now. He smiled softly at her. “You don’t have to hide them around me,” he winked, causing Ichigo’s stomach to do a backflip. “I kind of like them.”

The sunlight faded to a glow behind the trees. Ryou leaned in closer, and Ichigo’s body moved on its own, closing the space between them, until their lips finally met.

My two most recent fan art pieces of my favorite non cannon couple! If only Ichigo had realized Ryou’s feelings (or if he had just said something!), maybe we would have seen Ichigo’s heart sway 😭 And this wouldn’t just exist in my imagination.
