Your eyes burn in protest as you scroll to the top of your terminal window once more to search for the error that is fucking your code up. It’s been hours of work and you still haven’t managed to get your program to run even though the homework assignment is easy in theory. In fact it’s just like a problem that Jungkook said the professors would probably give you in your sophomore year, and here you are in your junior year seeing such an ‘easy’ question. With him, it had truly been easy, though. Jungkook was a better computer science teacher than any professor you’d ever encountered. Thinking back to early high school days has you smiling softly to yourself. 

You miss sitting closely together, heads sometimes touching, as you both bent over a problem while he explained why it looked hard, but was actually something you could do in your sleep. The wide smile he would give you when you completed competition questions in minimal time would always set your heart fluttering.

Your phone vibrating brings you back to reality. The caller ID reads ~JK~ and you swoop in to answer the call. If the time in the corner of your computer is right (and it is) he should have already opened his decision letter from the PhD department.

“Hey, what’s the verdict,” you ask as soon as you accept the call. You know there’s no other reason why he’d call you when you were supposed to meet up in a few hours for weekly game night.

“I got in,” his voice is soft, but you know him well enough to be able to hear the joy mixed in.

The first time you noticed a change with Jungkook was towards the end of summer before classes started again. It was late evening. The last of the summer heat for the day drawn away and the cool breeze from the open window crept in. You shifted closer to Jungkook, feeling the warmth of his body radiate off him to you. His body temperature always running a tad bit higher than yours and you would tease him about it. He’d joke and say that it’s because your heart was so cold and his was warm. He had been  your best friend for as long as you could remember. There was nothing that you two didn’t know about each other. It started off as your typical night with Jungkook, watching movies on the couch in the living room of his house. You had cuddled him before, something that was nothing more than an innocent gesture between both of you. Yet that night was different. When you moved closer to him he stiffened, and though you had barely brushed against him a loud groan escaped his lips before he collapsed from the couch on to the ground. He keeled over grasping at his wrist, his breathing erratic.

You were saved from responding when Captain Kim barked both your names across the precinct.

Namjoon sighed as he watched the two of you bicker all the way to the door.

It’s like having extra children. 

“We’ve got a case. Commissioner marked it top priority and you two are taking lead as of right now.”

Your forehead wrinkled in confusion and Jungkook raised a single curious brow.

“But Jimin is my –”

“Why not Hoseok?”

Namjoon raised a hand to silence you both. You weren’t teaming with your regular partners. Questions were to be expected.

“Jimin’s staying on that trafficking case while you work with Jeon. We need to draw out a perp targeting engaged couples. Thus far, all of his victims have been a male and a female, mid-to-late twenties. You two fit the profile, so…” he grinned, “congratulations on your engagement.”
