3 Phone In My Hand And Heart In My Throat, It Was My Gift For The Night

3 ☾  phone in my hand and heart in my throat, it was my gift for the night

warnings: there are mentions of blood here because of the car accident.

notes: for all intents, the car accident happened on November 6, 2020 at around 8:45-50pm. The divorce was finalized on September 29, 2020.

In the busy night streets of Seoul, the car accident had caught the attention of terrified citizens. The witnesses were quick to call 119, but it took nearly 15 minutes for the ambulance and authorities to come and assess the situation.

You were unconscious the whole way through. When they dragged your body out from under the car, you whole body was covered in blood and bruises. By the time the EMTs got you to the ER, there was a flurry of nurses waiting for your arrival, having heard that there was a severe car accident involving a box truck. The other driver died on scene. You were the only one showing signs of life; a slow, but an existing pulse.

The nurses in charge took care of the belongings found in the car and looked through for any sort of identification. Though you were relatively well known in Seoul, it was hard to recognize your face when most of your body was smeared with blood. When they pulled out your medical records, it was a shock that there was only one emergency contact on file, and that contact was Min Yoongi. They dialed his number and waited for him to pick up but after nearly 6 tries, there was still no answer. The nurses ended up leaving a voicemail and a text (thanks to the newest system of tech they had at their hospital). It was hard to gauge what to do while they waited for a call back because there was no one else on your contact list. They could only hope that he would show up or at least call them back to send them any other important contacts.

-

Min Yoongi was living his best life at the hottest nightclub in Seoul. Jungkook had invited him and Yura out to celebrate the news of their ‘official’ romance, despite knowing their feelings had been going on for a while now. For some reason, he had been feeling more alive than ever before. It was like his body regenerated and his energy was renewed when his divorce finalized and he was able to come out in public with Yura.

Two months post-divorce had looked good on him. It what all of his friends and coworkers had said to him and he really, really felt it. He was sitting in their private booth with Jungkook sitting across him and Yura cuddled up on his side.

“Never imagined that divorce could look good on someone, but look at you.” Jungkook says, smirking at he lifts up a shot in celebration.

Yoongi looks at him. “It’s been 2 months since the divorce already, you’ve said that to me so many times.”

Jungkook laughs, “yeah because it’s true. You and Y/n just never seemed right together. I felt like you guys were from completely different worlds. Yura seems to be more suited to you, huh?”

Yoongi peers over at Yura, who looks at Jungkook and begins to giggle.

“Yeah, I guess so. Whatever happened with Y/n doesn’t matter anymore. We didn’t work out and I’m with Yura now.” Yoongi states, almost as if he’s reassuring himself.

Jungkook and Yura both put up a shot and encouraged him to drink, but was interrupted by the sound of his phone ringing. That was strange because he had specifically told his assistants that no one should contact him today. He looked at the number and realized it was unfamiliar so he didn’t bother answering it. In the next 3 minutes, the same number had called 5 more times and left a voicemail, so he assumed it was probably something important related to business.

Yura looked at him strangely. “Who is it?”

Yoongi shook his head. “Not sure, I don’t know the number but it seems like an emergency. I’ll be right back.”

Holding his phone in his hand, Yoongi excused himself from the table. Jungkook and Yura both nod at him before he leaves for the side door.

The alley that the door opened up to was eerily empty. The air smelled differently due to the rain. Looking out onto the puddles on the concrete, he grumbles. He hates the rain. It always brought out unwanted memories.

He unlocked his phone to listen to the voicemail, only to be cut off by a text notification from an unknown number. He quickly read the text message, then read it again to make sure he was seeing things right. That can’t be right, right?

Yoongi didn’t even realize he was holding his breath until he started coughing and choking. He started thinking about what to do. Seoul medical was 20 minutes away, but it was almost 9:30 so the streets shouldn’t be too crowded. If he speeds a little, he could probably cut it down to 10 minutes, but was that enough? He started thinking about the things that could happen in those 10 minutes. The text, nor the voicemail, had said anything specific so he was in the dark. All he knows is that Y/n is at the hospital and he was the only one listed on her emergency contacts. He was scared to go to the hospital and find out what happened. All he wanted at this moment was for her to be okay. Even if they already divorced, that didn’t mean he didn’t care for her. They spent 4 years of their lives together and they loved each other very much. It was impossible not to hold some kind of care for her.

Without a moment wasted, he ran back inside the club to grab his coat and his keys. He was stopped by Yura, who grabbed his arm and pulled him back.

“What’s going on? Where are you going?” She asked, eyebrows furrowed.

Yoongi shook her hand off. He was anxious to leave at this point. “It’s an emergency, I gotta go. I’ll call you later okay?” He told her.

“What’s wrong?” Jungkook asks as he gets up from the seat.

Jungkook can see the stress in Yoongi’s face and knew something was terribly wrong.

“Y/n’s in the hospital right now, they called me because I’m her only contact so I have to go now.” Yoongi explains before running out of the club and into his car. He couldn’t hear Yura and Jungkook calling his name over the ringing in his ears. Somehow, he mustered up the energy to text Seokjin. If he was the only contact on your list, that must have meant Seokjin didn’t know you were in the hospital yet.

The drive to the hospital was long and excruciating. He felt like the anxiety was building up and swarming his skin as he kept repeating the text message and the voicemail in his head. It can’t be anything serious right?, he thinks to himself.

When he got to the hospital, it was so much busier than it looked outside. He ran through the sea of people to the receptionist. The lady behind the desk looked to be middle-aged and didn’t care for his frantic state.

Yoongi can barely catch his breath enough to talk. “I’m here for Kim Y/n, please tell me where she is!” he musters.

The lady looked up at him strangely. “Name and relation to the patient, please?”

“It’s Min Yoongi. I’m the husband,” he states, not even noticing the slip of tongue.

“Alright, give me a sec to look up her room.” The lady says nonchalantly, as if it wasn’t a fucking emergency at all.

In that moment, he hears the beeping of his phone and realizes that he had been holding onto his phone so tight that the palms of his hands were turning red. He looked at the notification and sees that it’s a text from Jungkook.

Another nurse passes by them and takes a second look at Yoongi. She turns towards him and greets him.

“Hi, Mr. Min, right? I’m the one who texted and left the voicemail. I’ll take you over to the ER lobby and we can talk about what happened and all of the paperwork.” She says in a soft tone. She started walking into a hallways before Yoongi could even reply, but he thanked her in his head for being straightforward.

She led him to a nearly empty narrow hallway with chairs attached to the wall. The blaring red light on the wall looked ominous.

“This is the emergency waiting room for Ms. Kim Y/n. Do you know if she has any other relatives to contact?” She asked.

Yoongi almost collapsed into the seat. The anxiety of rushing to the hospital had turned his legs into jelly.

“I know her cousin. I texted him before I came here. There’s no need for you guys to call. Thank you so much for everything you did.” He says, expressing his gratitude.

Taking out his phone, he quickly went onto your cousin’s contact info and texted him.

“It’s no problem at all. Did you want us to update her contact information?”

“No, that’s not necessary. Can you tell me what happened?”

“From what I know, it was a car collision involving a box truck on the smaller side. The side opposite Y/n was impacted, and the other driver died on scene. If you would like to wait, the doctor or one of the nurses will be out with the chart.” She informed him.

Yoongi could barely speak. He could barely absorb the information.

“We think the collision might have been due to the rain.” She adds.

He could only nod. She hates the rain.

“I’ll let you wait here then. You can come to the receptionist again when you’re ready to fill out her paperwork.” She said before nodding at him and leaving the waiting room.

Now, Yoongi was all alone and his only source of reality was the blaring red light on the wall indicating an operation was happening.

A beeping interrupted his solemn thoughts and from the corner of his eyes, he sees his phone light up with a text message notification again. He picks it up and sees that it’s from Jungkook again, telling him that he was here.

It was only a couple of minutes later that Jungkook was shown into the waiting room by the same nurse. Yoongi looked up at him and saw him running towards where he was sitting. His wavy hair was sticking to the sweat on his forehead and his breaths were short. He took the seat next to Yoongi and looked at him with worried eyes. Yoongi looked back at him confused.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” He asked.

“Have they told you what happened already?” Jungkook asked.

“Not much, only that it was a car accident and the other driver died on scene. Nothing about Y/n yet. I’m scared.” Yoongi’s voice cracks and he’s worried that he’s going to start crying. There was too much uncertainty in this situation that he can’t sit still and calm down. He doesn’t know what’s going on in that operating room and no one has come out yet to tell him how Y/n is.

Jungkook snaps him out of his thoughts.

“When I was driving here, I think I saw the scene. The box truck was on the smaller side, but it was still big. I couldn’t really tell what happened, but Y/n’s car was totaled. The whole right side is crushed. I think it was the car you gave her. There was a lot of blood on and around her car.” He states while putting an arm around Yoongi’s shoulder.

The scene that he passed by was terrifying. He couldn’t imagine anyone surviving that. The amount of blood that was on the ground was out of a horror movie. He may not have liked Y/n but he never wished anything as horrifying as what he saw on her, or anybody. He could tell Yoongi was scared. The man was shaking in his seat and his right leg was constantly jittering.

Yoongi scoffs. “That doesn’t help at all, man. She hated driving that car, and she hated the rain. She hated driving in the rain the most because it scared her. Why would she be out driving when it was pouring? Jin said he talked to her before she left and he said she was getting food, but couldn’t she have just gotten in delivered? I don’t understand this.”

That’s how Jungkook can tell that Yoongi’s scared. He starts to ramble, and in that fear he began to reminisce about the small facts about you that people normally wouldn’t notice.

“I don’t know, hyung. I didn’t know her like you did. She might not even be the same person you knew. Maybe she likes driving in the rain now. Either way, no one would have ever expected this to happen to her. She’ll be okay. Look, the light is still on. That means they’re still working on her. There’s still hope.”

Yoongi groans and covers his face with both of his hands. He couldn’t even begin to comprehend this whole situation. The weight of Jungkook’s hand on his shoulder and the constant blaring of the red light made it seem like he was in hell waiting for his punishment.
