My Pitch for a Live-Action Spider-Man TV series

I know that this will likely never happen because TPTB at Sony and Marvel want to make Spider-Man-based films over TV shows, but I can dream, right?

So, here’s the general outline:

Format

The series will be six seasons total to prevent burnout and fatigue, with no more than 12-13 episodes per season. This will allow room for episodic breaks to explore the characters and worldbuilding while keeping a tight, serialized narrative.

Rating-wise, I’d give it a TV-14. The story will contain violence, sexual content, and other mature themes like substance abuse, parental neglect and verbal abuse, and moral ambiguity. 

Unlike previous live-action adaptations, the series will start with a 19/20-year-old Spider-Man that has five years of experience under his belt and is currently attending university. The goal is to explore Peter Parker’s desires to achieve social, romantic, and academic success at ESU and beyond against his responsibilities as Spider-Man. Additionally, Peter will have to confront the very idea of Spider-Man (what his persona means to him, his friends, and to the people of New York), and how it inhibits him in confiding in others for both practical and psychological reasons; a very classic Spidey narrative, but presented with a modern slant.

While I recognize the importance of Peter’s early years for establishing who he is and who he’ll become, the high school narrative has been done to death in other adaptations, and most audiences are already familiar with that story. Having Peter in college will lend a maturity to this adaptation that’s closer to the storylines and themes of the comics, while still providing room for the characters to grow and evolve. 

Side note: I’m surprised at how few adaptations have explored Peter’s college years. I can only think of two off the top of my head, and they’re both animated. I don’t count the Raimi or Webb films because neither really focused on that aspect of Peter’s life; we only got a few brief scenes of him in class in one, and references to him attending school in the other. 

That being said, Peter’s origin story won’t be skipped over. It’ll be covered in a flashback episode that puts the spotlight on Uncle Ben. By exploring Ben’s character and his relationship with Peter, we’ll emerge with a fuller understanding of why his death was the catalyst that gave birth to Spider-Man. Not the spider-bite. Not the suit. And most definitely not out of ego-stroking self-interest in a bid to play with the big-league superheroes. 

Each season will have a central theme that’ll shape the narrative:

Season 1 - Responsibility. In this season we’ll explore the origins of Spider-Man’s famous mantra “with great power comes great responsibility,” and how each of the main characters come to terms with their responsibilities. Some will rise to the challenge, and others will fall by the wayside with disastrous results.

Season 2 - Choice. Tying into the themes of Season 1, this season will explore how our choices have consequences, even when we try to do the right thing. In his choice to remain secretive about his crime-fighting persona to protect himself and those he loves, Peter will struggle with whether or not he should continue being Spider-Man when doing so brings about very negative ramifications.

Season 3 - Control. Following a tragic loss at the end of Season 2, Peter and his cast will be plunged headfirst into a battle for control: control over the city, control over public opinion, and control over themselves. This will be explored heavily through addiction (drugs, alcohol, nicotine, sex, physical violence, criminal acts, ideology, power) and the false sense of security that it brings.

Season 4 - Forgiveness. In the aftermath of the events of Season 3, the main characters will be forced to take stock of their actions and find a way forward. Peter will have to learn to forgive himself for the damage he’s caused as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and in doing so, inspire forgiveness in his friends and enemies.

Season 5 - Redemption. After his downward spiral in Seasons 3 and 4, this season will mark a turning point in Peter’s life as he embarks on a new relationship and a renewed commitment to being a better, more-balanced Spider-Man. But the road to redemption is a long and arduous one, and it’ll bring the main characters to a crossroads that will cement their destinies.

Season 6 - Legacy. In the final season, Peter will be caught between the ghosts of the past and the uncertainty of the future when an old foe of Spider-Man’s returns. This will force him and his cast to confront the notion of legacy and the mark it leaves on others and the world. Are legacies ultimately worth continuing, or should some be buried for good?

Each season will have one “big bad”/primary antagonist to foil Spider-Man, with the occasional secondary/co-antagonist:

The first two seasons will feature classic Spider-Man rogues to pad out the worldbuilding and lay the foundation for future story arcs.

Season 3 will feature Black Cat as an anti-hero playing the field with the Maggia. It’ll also feature Silvermane and Hammerhead against Tombstone, Silver Sable, and Mister Negative. 

Season 4 will feature Chameleon as an ally of Kraven, and see both the return and introduction of certain rogues in the build-up to Sinister Six. It’ll also feature Yuri Watanabe as Wraith out for revenge for the murder of Jean DeWolff.
