Summary: Everyone has demons.

You were used to waking up early in the morning, but you weren’t used to waking up feeling this happy. You heaved a sigh as you turned in bed, snuggling closer to Spencer, making him chuckle as you smiled up at him.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning,” he rasped out, reaching out to brush a piece of hair behind your ear as you yawned, covering your mouth with the back of your hand.
“What time is it?”
“It’s still early,” he said “You can sleep some more.”
“No, this is better than sleeping,” you muttered into his chest and his fingers caressed your hair.

Summary: Secrets can’t stay hidden forever.

The possibility of you sitting with a killer who had sworn to destroy you was scary for sure, but thinking that the said killer could be much closer to you than you had thought was enough to make your blood freeze in your veins.
It was as if you were going through the same thing that had happened with your dad ages ago, but with a small difference;
Your dad had never tried to hurt you, but this time the killer was coming after you.
Spencer stood beside you as you exhaled the smoke of your cigarette into the air, your hands still shaky but you forced yourself to focus on the police and the FBI escorting people out of the building while he kept his gaze on you.
“You might be wrong though?” you managed to ask, looking up at him, “Right? Maybe it’s not—maybe it’s not someone as close to me?”

Summary: Anyone can be a suspect.

When you woke up, the first thing you realized before even opening your eyes was that you weren’t in your bed.
Your bed was softer than this, the sheets were silk and the pillows were fluffier-
Spencer.
You were sleeping in Spencer’s bed, and in all honesty, both he and you were terrible at this break up thing.
You rubbed your eyes and sat up in bed, trying pull yourself together and get rid of the haze of the sleep. Judging by the state of the bed, it was very obvious that Spencer hadn’t slept there and the clattering of plates coming from the kitchen let you know that he was already awake. You yawned, stretching out and kicked off the covers before you quickly made the bed and stepped back to see if it looked good.
Well, it looked acceptable at least.
You shrugged to yourself and stepped out of the room to approach where the noises were coming from, then leaned sideways on the door frame, a smile warming your face when Spencer turned his head to look at you.
“Morning.”
“Hi there,” you said, your voice still raspy because of sleep, “What are you making?”

Summary: Everyone needs a shelter.

For all your life, your sister had always said she hated watching horror movies with you because you would always criticize every character and their choices in the movie.
Who would even stay where they were when they knew there was danger outside, when they knew there was something coming for them?
You had never thought you’d learn the answer first hand;
Because there was nothing else to do, and because that was exactly what you were doing.
Spencer and the rest of his team had sent you away from that basement so that you could get some fresh air and at least attempt to get away from the greeting written on the wall with blood but you knew it was impossible.
There was no running away from that, you had seen it already.
You dangled your legs off the pier back and forth, keeping your gaze on the lake that looked so calm that it was almost like a painting. Funny, you hadn’t ever stopped to enjoy it when you were still a child, you had never actually sat there on the pier to take a breath, wrapped in the safety that would soon disappear.
The footsteps coming closer pulled you out of your thoughts and you turned you head as Spencer sat down next to you.
“Hey.”
“Hi,” you croaked out and he ran his fingers through his curls.
“Do you want me to take you home?”
You shook your head, “I’m not sure what home is for me at this point, to be honest with you,” you murmured, “Besides I heard the other agents talking, you guys are going to be pretty busy the moment the rest of your team gets here.”

Summary: Coming home can be unpleasant.

After getting a phone call from the FBI, you were now sure of one thing:
Karma really needed another hobby other than messing with you, and this break up was definitely not going the way it was supposed to go.
For starters, people who broke up with each other were not supposed to see each other this much. You had different lives, different social circles, different jobs and somehow universe kept pushing you two in each other’s space.
To make things worse, the last time you talked to Garcia she had offhandedly mentioned Luke dragging Spencer to a nightclub much to his displeasure and introducing him to a friend of his. Naturally, your mind was full of images of Spencer in a happy relationship, eventually moving to a house in the suburbs with her and having kids and all that.
“I don’t know what Luke is thinking,” Garcia said, “But I’m two seconds away from pulling him aside and giving him a piece of my mind. Reid is obviously still not over you, ambushing him to introduce him to a girl won’t change that.”
Needless to say, you had been in a terrible mood for the last couple of days.

Summary: Truce can be inevitable.

It was safe to say that you were officially off your rocker after the break up. Stress? Check. No sleep? Check. Getting drunk mid-day? Check.
Looking a serial killer in the eye and threatening him?
Also check.
The constant anger was gone though. That blinding fury was gone, the fear was gone, the only thing you felt was numbness. It was as if you were watching everything happening around you from behind a glass, it was there but you couldn’t touch it or feel it.
With one exception; you missed Spencer each and every minute of the day, so you at least knew there was something left inside of you that wasn’t broken. But after what had happened, it wasn’t like you could call him. You had already left him multiple voice messages whenever you got too drunk anyway, and you were sure he had deleted them without even listening.
Not that you could blame him. He had already told you he wished he had never met you, and there was nothing you could do to change that.

Summary: Everyone has red lines that should not be crossed.

Break ups were hard, and they were always messy and heartbreaking, but no other break up before Spencer had ever messed you up this bad.
You couldn’t focus. You couldn’t eat. You surely couldn’t sleep and nightmares were even worse than before. Every time you closed your eyes, you were standing in a pool of blood, in front of dead bodies of everyone you loved and each and every night you woke up screaming.
Days weren’t any better. Exhaustion and lack of sleep was catching up with you, and even you could tell how worrisome you looked. You were running on coffee and cigarettes, everything you did was mechanical from the time you woke up until the time you went to bed only to wake up in an hour or so. Even your concealer couldn’t hide the dark shadows under your eyes and there was no trace of any light in your eyes, not anymore at least.
You looked like a walking corpse.
You had no idea how Spencer was, but you hoped he was handling it better than you were. Even if you broke his heart beyond repair, you knew that would keep him alive.
Him being angry at you alive was better than him loving you dead.

Summary: Love demands sacrifices.

Not even once in your life had you ever imagined yourself in handcuffs, in an interrogation room on the wrong side of the table.
You weren’t even at the FBI headquarters though. The police had taken you to the station after the hospital, taking a blood sample and your fingerprints, then they had handcuffed you and left you there with a glass of water.
Of course they suspected you. Of course they thought you had murdered him.
Murder was your father’s legacy, after all.
You traced the handcuffs over your wrists, already feeling the bruises forming there. The shock still hadn’t worn off but you were starting to think it was a good thing. It felt as if you were watching all of this from behind some kind of glass window, perfectly aware of every single emotion but unable to actually feel them.
Spencer had said when you felt threatened, your body produced nervous energy, some sort of a fight or flight reaction but for once you weren’t trying to do any of that.
You just sat there, completely frozen.
“You look calm,” the police officer spoke, making you look up, trying to ignore the faint yelling coming from outside, possibly from the end of the hall.
“I’m sorry?”
“Most people would be traumatized if this happened to them, they’d be crying, shaking…” he motioned at you, “But look at you. Still as a statue. You look pretty calm.”
“Would you rather if I were crying?”
“I’d rather if you were acting like a human being,” he said, “Why are you so calm?”
Why were you so calm?
Because your mother had taught you this much. Showing emotion when you were afraid meant weakness.
“My father was a serial killer,” you stated, looking him dead in the eye, “I’ve had a complicated childhood.”

The room was so silent that you could swear even your heartbeat was audible. You tried to think through the panic running through your veins, but it was nearly impossible.
He wasn’t supposed to find out about that.
You weren’t a profiler, but you didn’t need to be one to understand how betrayed he felt at the moment. He looked completely frozen, his sharp glare giving you goosebumps.
He had never looked at you like that before, and the anger in his eyes was more than enough to pin you to your spot.
“Spencer,” you managed you say, your voice way too weak, “I can explain.”
Silence.
“I didn’t—“ you stammered, “I didn’t read it. I would never.”
He just kept his gaze on you, raising his brows as if he didn’t believe a word you said and you wetted your lips.
“Where did you find it?”
That managed to draw a reaction from him, at least. He scoffed a dry laugh, shaking his head.
“That’s what you’re asking me right now?” he asked, “It was under the magazines on the coffee table, I thought it was one of mine.”
You cursed under your breath, closing your eyes for a moment. Of course your mother would put it there for you to take a look at it in case you wanted to.
“So?” he said, nodding at the folder lying on the kitchen island, “Do you want to tell me why you have a file on me?”
“It’s not mine.”

Summary: Good intentions can lead to bad consequences.

Your first night with Spencer was different than any other time with anyone else you had ever been with, and you were one hundred percent sure that he would have some scientific explanation for it, but for you, the reason behind that was very simple.
Even if you couldn’t even admit it to yourself yet.
But for the first time in a very long time, your nightmares left you alone. Your sleep wasn’t disturbed, not by anything unpleasant anyway and you were almost sure that the small movement beside you in bed followed by a soft kiss into your neck was a part of your dreams.
The fuzzy feeling spread through you as the haze of the sleep slowly withdrew from your body and you snuggled closer into the covers, not ready to leave the warmth yet but as soon as you turned and felt the empty spot next to you, you opened your eyes, frowning. You sat up in bed, rubbing at your eyes and grabbed the folded paper lying on the pillow beside yours.
Beatrice;
She is the sum of nature’s universe,
To her perfection all of beauty tends.
Dante.
You smiled and your eyes skimmed the next lines under the quote.
New case in Ohio, they called in the whole team.
You heaved a sigh, falling back to bed again, pulling the silk sheets over your head and letting out a groan. The sunshine that seemed to fill your veins had disappeared already, leaving its place to coldness and you kicked off the sheets to walk to the bathroom.

Summary: Not every night is for sleeping.

All things considered, you were sure that you were supposed to be more stressed out than you were right now. The FBI still had nothing on the copycat killer that had sent you flowers, or any of the others that were running wild all over the country. BAU was working nonstop because there was more and more pressure coming from the supervisors and higher ups, and Spencer had told you something about the profile evolving but hadn’t gotten into details.
Not that you would ever ask him to, what you heard was more than enough.
Despite all that, whenever you were with him, you managed to feel almost…peaceful. It was so unfamiliar to you that it had taken you a moment to acknowledge what it was.
Happiness. Pure happiness, enough to get rid of the mind-numbing panic and worries about the future.
Or, as your sister had so eloquently put it, you were so, so screwed.
You took a sip of your mimosa, texting Spencer under the table, barely aware of the conversation taking place but you had to look up when you heard your name being called.

Pretending to be fine was such a huge part of your life that you had barely spared any thought to it.
You guys look like statues, your sister-in-law had told you after she and your sister had started getting serious, In the pictures, or whenever you’re under stress. You just freeze but look pretty, like a statue.
It was mechanical for you at this point. No matter how much of a mess your life was, no matter how all your nights were filled with nightmares, whenever you were in public you were supposed to pretend that everything was alright.
Keep your composure, your mother used to tell you, Even if you don’t feel like it.
As it turned out, you had gotten so good at keeping your composure that doing so didn’t even feel that hard when there was a copycat killer out there that was sending you flowers.
You stole a look at Spencer sitting beside you, his gaze fixed on the wall and you could almost see the wheels turning behind his eyes, his mind working nonstop to think of any clues that could help him to get further on the case, Without even thinking about it, you reached out to squeeze at his hand and his head shot up as if you had pulled him out of his deep thoughts. He offered you a small smile before lifting your hand and pressing a kiss on your knuckles.

Your car ride to your mother’s place took shorter than you thought it would, but you weren’t complaining. The sooner you were done, the sooner you would be able to meet Spencer for lunch, if he was available.
Just the thought of seeing him was more than enough to make your heart skip a beat and put a smile on your face as you left the car and walked to the house to ring the bell. The maid let you in as always, and you hummed a song to yourself, already impatient.
“Hey,” your sister waved at you from the couch when you stepped into the living room, “You’re early.”
You pulled your brows together, “So are you.”
“I dropped Lily off to school this morning,” she shrugged your shoulders, “Figured it would make more sense to drive straight here.”
“Where’s mom?”
“Upstairs, getting ready,” she said, “You look very chipper.”
“It’s a beautiful morning.”
She tilted her head, “So… Dr. Reid then?”
“Hm?”
“You woke me up at 5 o’clock in the morning, screaming about him kissing you and I barely heard from you for the following days,” she reminded you and you shot her a look.

Summary: Love has a way of making itself known.

It was as if you were walking on clouds the following days. Even though you hadn’t been able to talk to Spencer on the phone or could barely text because of how busy he was with the case, it wasn’t enough to make the excitement in your heart disappear whenever you thought back to the time he had kissed you at the end of your date.
That kiss had also made you realize something:
You really, really missed him when he was away.
So you did the only thing you could think of and focused your full attention on your work. It at least helped a little with the worry that seemed to fill your head whenever you thought about him being on a job to catch a dangerous killer. You knew he was good at his job, his whole team was, even if your mind kept coming up with the scenarios that could go wrong.
On the other hand, that fire at the pit of your stomach was burning as strong as that morning, no matter how many days had passed.

Summary: First dates are exciting.

So as it turned out, you had gone completely crazy thanks to this little crush of yours because you had decided to give in and search signs that he’s into you. You had maybe fifteen tabs open as you sipped your coffee, trying to remember whether Spencer had shown any of these signs.
You were sure that he was slightly leaning in whenever he was talking to you, for starters. You had just assumed it was because he was tall, but according to all these websites, softening his posture and tilting his body towards you even when he could clearly hear you was a good sign.
“You cannot be serious,” your sister said from behind you and you tilted the screen down but it was too late.
“Please tell me this is a joke,” she said, “Tell me you’re not actually checking those websites to see if he likes you.”
“Okay, he reads my body language too so basically he started it—”
“Oh my God,” she murmured, “You do realize that you’re a grown ass woman, right?”
“Yeah?”
“How hard is it to ask him?”
“I’m not going to ask him if he likes me!” you exclaimed, “That’s not how it works.”

Summary: Scars aren’t always visible.

Standing in the bathroom of the prison your father was kept in, you couldn’t even focus on how tense you were. It wasn’t good for you or your mental health to keep seeing him but apparently he was somehow related to what had happened at the charity ball, so you had to talk to him, as per his request.
But it wasn’t even your biggest problem.
You checked your reflection in the mirror, fixing your dress and making sure your hair looked good before you heaved a sigh.
“I’m a grown ass woman, not a high schooler,” you said, “I refuse to google signs a guy likes you. I have dignity, I have a career, I’m a freaking adult who has a favorite whiskey brand. I’m not falling down that rabbit hole.”
You threw your shoulders back and left the bathroom, but as soon as you turned the corner to the hall and the tall figure of Spencer caught your eyes, you could swear your heart started beating in your throat.
Okay.
Maybe you should’ve googled that though.

Summary: Forgiveness requires effort.

Driving to BAU headquarters was even more nerve-wrecking than usual, seeing that you and Spencer were still not on best terms. Naturally, you had no time to talk to one another after the murder in the ballroom, but that uncomfortable feeling in your stomach didn’t seem to disappear no matter how much you tried to ignore it.
So when BAU called you to their office once again, you couldn’t help but feel excited even though you knew you weren’t supposed to.
The ring of your phone snapped you out of your thoughts and you touched the screen.
“Hi mom.”
“Are you meeting that handsome agent?” her voice filled the car and you heaved a sigh.
“I’m going there to look at the crime scene photos, not to have a romantic date.”
“Well it could still be a romantic date,” she said, “Perhaps you two could…you know. Spend some time together after you’re done there.”
“He’s working.”
“So what?”
You scoffed a laugh, “Mom, I know you’re not very familiar with this whole working thing, but people can’t just leave work whenever they want.”
“Don’t people call in sick sometimes?”
“Don’t- don’t people call in sick while they’re at work?” you repeated, “Not exactly. Besides, I told you, things are weird between us.”
“It didn’t look like things were weird between you two back at the charity ball.”
You pulled your brows together, “Uh- someone died at the said charity ball.”
“I know, a huge tragedy and we will all miss Tracy,” she said “May she rest in peace, but life goes on.”
You shook your head slightly as you pulled over, “I’ll call you when I leave there, okay?”
“Have fun!”
“Have fun at the FBI?” you asked but she had already hung up. You bit on your lip, taking a minute to pull yourself together and calm yourself down before you grabbed the boxes from the backseat and left your car.
By the time the elevator reached the BAU floor, you were not calm at all, instead, you were getting more nervous by the minute.
What if he didn’t even want to talk to you?

Summary: Ice meets fire.

Being heartbroken over a genius whom you weren’t even dating to begin with was not something you saw coming, but here you were.
Lying in bed, eating chocolate and trying your hardest to focus on the show playing on the huge TV.
“That’s a beautiful wedding dress, fuck what your aunt says!” you shouted at the screen, chewing on the caramel chocolate but then looked up when you heard the front door open.
“Hello? Anyone home?”
You groaned and turned your head to see your sister walk into your living room before she leaned on her hip.
“Oh great, you’re still where I left you.”
“I gave one person a key,” you pointed at her, “One. I don’t know if it was mom or you or your wife, but when I remember who it was, that person will be in trouble.”
“It was mom and we had copies made for times like these.”
You made a face and slid a little on the couch, “You should just leave me with my misery.”
“Are you seriously still sulking over that Reid guy?”
“I’m not sulking.”
She heaved a sigh and plopped down next to you, “The guy you liked suspected that you were a killer. So what? It could happen to anyone.”
You shot her a look, “Mina I’m pretty sure it doesn’t just happen to anyone,” you said, “In fact, I’m one hundred percent sure I’m the only person in the entire world who has had this problem.”

Summary: First impressions can be wrong.

You heaved a sigh, changing the channel while snacking on popcorn, lying on your sister’s couch. It was still early but you couldn’t sleep as usual, so as soon as the first lights of the morning spilled through your window, you left home and drove to her place.
But even the most dramatic show wasn’t enough to grab your attention.
You nibbled on your lip and unlocked your phone, then tapped on your gallery to take a look at the photo Garcia had taken when you were all drinking together and sent it to you. You didn’t even bother to try to stop the smile appearing on your face as you looked at the picture, then zoomed in to Spencer’s grin as Garcia held the shot away from him before you zoomed in on your face.
You actually looked happy. The shine in your eyes was visible even in the picture and the huge smile on your face did nothing to hide what you felt, and it looked so different to your eyes that it took you by surprise even if it was the hundredth time you were looking at the picture.
The footsteps coming closer made you snap out of it and you quickly locked your phone again before you sat up in the couch.
“Jesus, you scared me,” Mina said, pressing a hand over her chest “How long have you been here?”
“Like two hours.”
“Why?”
“Your house is my house.”
“It really isn’t,” she said and walked to the coffee maker, “You could’ve at least made coffee if you were going to break in.”
“I have a key,” you reminded her and heaved a sigh, “By the way, we might have a problem.”
“Is it mom? Dad? Work?”
“Romantic.”
She scrunched up her face, “Oh come on, it’s too early for me to deal with your romantic drama.”

Summary: Midnight texts are always honest.

Brunch with your family wasn’t a new thing for you, your mother insisted it was important to spend time together so that you all would know what was happening in each other’s lives.
Once a week at one o’clock, at your mother’s house. Like clockwork.
The only problem was that after your small argument with your sister in front of Spencer and all of FBI, you found it a little difficult to make small talk, so that ended up with you and your sister sitting silently at the table, glaring at each other.
“Alright,” your mother heaved a sigh, putting her glass of mimosa on the table, “Somebody needs to tell me what’s happening right now because I can only take so much sulking. Y/N?”
You shrugged slightly, grabbing your mimosa to take a sip and your mother turned to your sister.
“Mina?”
“I have nothing to say,” she stated, “She was the one who threw a fit in front of an audience, she can explain what happened.”
“I didn’t throw a fit,” you spat, “Excuse me if I found it weird that you’re still clinging to the photos with that monster in them.”
“Jesus, you’re so obsessed.”
“I’m obsessed?” you exclaimed, “We made a deal, we said we would burn all his photos—“
“I’m not going to throw away my whole childhood just because he is in them,” Mina cut you off, “It’s a good thing I didn’t, even your cute boyfriend agrees.”
“Wait, what boyfriend?” Your mother asked, looking between you and you could feel the fire spreading over your cheeks.
“He’s not my boyfriend.”
“What boyfriend?”
“Dr. Spencer Reid,” Mina smiled at you, batting her lashes as your mother’s jaw dropped, “He works in the FBI.”
“Mina!”
“Oh please it’s so obvious, you might as well get a tattoo over your forehead. You were giving him all heart eyes in a conference room full of creepy crime scene photos, you’ve got issues.”

Series Masterlist
Warnings: Murder, serial killers, violence, manipulation, mentions of sex, smoking.
Summary: Some memories are meant to be secrets.

To be completely honest, not hearing from Spencer for the last couple of days was affecting you more than you thought it would. You had no idea why, because everything between you was professional, except for the whole flirting.
But again, that was still one sided, so…
It was impossible to miss someone you had met so recently, and you were completely aware of that but that didn’t stop you from checking your voice mails or texts just to see whether he had left something, but there was nothing. As if all of that wasn’t enough, you couldn’t sleep well at nights so you decided to focus on your work and try to push back any thoughts of handsome FBI agents who could apparently read you like an open book.
“So if you want to hold the ceremony inside, they can of course decorate the hall and put the altar there but—“ you walked through the garden, stifling a yawn “I think the garden fits better. What do you think, Sarah?”
“I think it’s perfect!” the bride-to-be grinned at you before turning to her fiancée. “Babe?”
“I like it. How many people can fit in here?”
“You gave me a list of 200 people, but the garden itself can hold 300,” you said, “So we talked about a fall theme and I know it might be hard to visualize it with all these flowers around here, but my assistant will send you a couple of pictures after here so that you can have a clear idea.”
Your phone buzzed in your hand and you lowered your glances to check the caller ID, ready to reject the call but as soon as your eyes caught a sight of the name you felt your heart skip a beat. The excitement filled you instantly and you caught the small squeal trying to escape from your lips at the last second, but when you lifted your head to look at the couple, your expression was completely calm.
“Sorry, I have to take this,” you held up your phone, “Take a look around the garden and check if there’s anything you don’t like so that we can change it if you decide on here.”
They nodded and you walked away from them, taking a deep breath and answered the call.
“Finally professor,” Thankfully, you managed to keep your voice from going high-pitched with excitement, “I was beginning to think you forgot about me.”
There was a pause on the other line before Spencer’s voice reached your ears.
“Hi Y/N, you’re on speaker.”
You threw your head back, closing your eyes in embarrassment as you mouthed a curse, then cleared your throat.
“Of course I am. Hello the rest of the FBI whom I also thought forgot about me.” you said, looking around to the blossoming flowers and green grass in hopes of calming down, “What is it this time? Have my prayers been answered and someone finally shanked that monster?”

Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Warnings: Murder, serial killers, violence, manipulation, mentions of sex, smoking.
Summary: Everyone’s fairytale is different.

You had been bouncing your leg, sitting at the hall for the last five minutes while you waited for the guards to take your father into the interrogation room and let you know it was safe to go in but each minute made you feel even more nervous instead of giving you time to calm down. This time, Agent Alvez had other things to do, so another agent- JJ, Spencer called her- was accompanying you and Spencer today.
“Is it too late to change my mind?” you wondered out loud before turning to Spencer “Am I even allowed to change my mind?”
“He’s the one who’s imprisoned, not you,” he said, “You can change your mind anytime.”
“But?”
“But,” he said, “He kept his promise the last time, didn’t he? He will probably give us information about another copycat.”
“That’s a very polite and indirect way to say that I can’t change my mind, professor.”

A.N.: Thank you so much for your wonderful support to the first chapter my loves! Here’s the second one, I hope you will like it as well, and please let me know what you think of it! ❤❤ Ily, kisses! ❤❤❤
Chapter 1
Warnings: Murder, serial killers, violence, manipulation and mentions of sex, smoking.
Summary: Being in control can be just a facade.

You never really had a life that you could call “ordinary” but the last couple of days had been a whole new level.
Avoiding phone calls and news and text messages took extra effort in the 21st century, but you were beginning to think you were handling it quite well, all things considered.
Reid had left you a voice mail, and for some reason that was the only message you couldn’t bring yourself to delete unlike the other messages from his office. Maybe it was the way he had calmed you down when you were freaking out earlier, maybe you felt as if you owed him at least that, or maybe you just happened to like his voice.
Who knew? Not you, obviously.

Summary: No one can choose their family.

If it were another time, you could’ve at least attempted to convince yourself how everyone had problematic childhoods. Focusing on something else usually worked, per the advices of countless psychiatrists your mother had forced you to go after the-
Incident.
Just the thought of it was more than enough to make your blood freeze in your veins, but you were soon snapped out of your thoughts when your phone started ringing. You checked the caller I.D, and heaved a sigh before you touched the screen.
“Hello?”
“Please tell me you’re not going there.” Your mother’s voice filled the car and you pressed your lips together.
“Hi mom.”
“Every time you go there and visit that man in that wretched prison cell of his, he manages to get into your head!”
“That’s not what’s going to happen,” you said, keeping your eyes on the road, “You have no reason to worry.”
“I have every reason to worry!” she snapped, “We promised that we wouldn’t let him worm his way into our lives.”
“Yeah well, FBI begs to differ,” you forced yourself to say, “You’ve seen the news—“
“I don’t want to hear this,” she cut you off, then heaved a sigh, “It’s terrible enough to hear it once, let alone twice.”
You never really had the luxury of ignoring all the terrible things on the news, especially after what had happened. Ever since you were a child, the nightmares wouldn’t leave you alone, and you weren’t as good as your mother at ignoring what was happening while you were awake.
