Mischief

“Michael! Sera!” Adam ran towards the two angels, arms wide open ready for a hug and an excited joy glimmering in his eyes. 

Sera, having landed first, also spread out her arms open to hold the excited first man in a loving embrace. She would never admit it out loud, but Adam held a special place in her heart, as if he had been made of her. Beside her, landed Michael, who gave a certain kind of ‘scolding but playful’ look towards his brother, Lucifer, who was fluttering just behind Adam. 

“Hmm, so this is where you’ve been busy working at today,” he said with a smile that didn’t fully reach his eyes. The day had been hectic for him as Lucifer simply couldn’t be found anywhere in Heaven, and he ended up having to do his brother’s very much late and delayed load of work. 

“Oh, uhm, yup! You know, garden duties can sometimes be quite time-consuming,” Lucifer chuckled a little awkwardly as he shrugged his shoulders, knowing fully well what his brother had meant. But really, they couldn’t fully blame him! They asked to do the most boring of tasks, such as creating new types of grass, but also to keep them looking essentially the same, short and green plants that grew on the ground. He was lucky they even accepted his idea for the bamboo! He felt sorry for escaping and leaving Michael to deal with the annoyed elders, but he simply couldn’t force himself to sit still in a cramped office and do boring work! Besides, Michael was always better at appeasing their elders. 

Michael simply squinted at Lucifer, annoyed, but had already forgiven him. 

“How was your day, Adam?,” Sera asked, her long fingers gently brushing the first man’s hair. 

At the end of every week, Sera, alongside Michael, had made it into a habit to visit the garden and spend a few hours with Adam. Lucifer visited the most often, almost daily, Michael visited as often as his schedule allowed him to, and Sera only truly had the one day of the week to spare. The three angels had made it their goal to ensure that Adam wasn’t ever lonely in the garden.

Adam looked up from under her hand, eyes big and round with innocence. “It was good. Lucifer spent the whole day with me!” He squeezed Sera tighter. “I wish you could come often too.”

Sera felt her heart tighten with her chest at Adam’s words. “Oh, you know I would if I could.”

Eventually Adam pulled away from Sera. “Anyway!,” he started, the glow of his golden eyes somehow becoming even brighter. “I want to show you something Lucifer and I had made today!,” he announced as he reached for both Sera and Michael’s hands and eagerly pulled them towards a certain direction. 

The two angels allowed Adam to drag them towards a massive rainforest with Lucifer trailing behind them, a certain smile plastered onto his pale face. Michael had tried to ask what this ‘something’ was, but Adam kept insisting that it was a surprise and that they would know soon enough. While Sera was happily being dragged by Adam, Michael couldn’t help but give a sceptical glance towards his brother. Something was bound to happen whenever Lucifer was involved, though he eventually decided to at least trust Adam. 

After a few minutes of walking through thick bushes and over tall roots, the four eventually arrived in front of multiple towering trees with wide trunks, their leaves scattered high up like a thick, green blanket over the rainforest. But what really caught Michael and Sera’s eyes was the little wooden hut high up amongst the dense foliage, and little ladder dangling from beneath it. 

“Ta-da!!”

Lucifer and Adam both presented as they waved their hands in the air, looking very proud of the homely hut they had made amongst the forest canopy. 

“Let’s go inside!,” Lucifer said.

While the three angels could simply fly up to the hut and carry Adam with them, the first man himself had insisted that they try the full experience by going up the ladder. Lucifer was more than eager to comply, Michael was a little hesitant considering the way the ladder swayed and wobbled but complied regardless, and then there was Sera. She wasn’t even sure if it was possible for her to climb it given her very tall stature. 

With a little more effort than the other three, and some snickering from Lucifer with Michael shushing him (though the way he tried hard to stop his lips from cracking into a smile told another story), Sera somehow managed to actually climb the ladder into the hut.

After her experience with the ladder, Sera had expected that the hut could simply not accommodate her sheer height, but was pleasantly surprised when she didn’t need to hunch to simply fit in. 

If the hut looked homely from outside, then the inside was simply quaint, exuding a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. Little coconut shell lanterns all carved with unique patterns decorated the place, and vines lovingly hugged the walls of the hut as small flowers bloomed from them. To their right was a balcony overlooking the vast rainforest. Adam and Lucifer were already at the balcony, seemingly searching for something as they cupped fruits in their hands.

Adam waved Michael and Sera to come over.

“Here.” He placed berries and nuts on their hands and then pushed them closer towards the balcony railings. 

For a moment, the two angels stood there looking lost and confused as to why they were asked to hold some fruits and nuts on their palms. Just as Michael was about to ask what was happening, a group of medium sized furry animals with elongated arms and long tails swung between the trees, landing on either the railing itself or on branches near the two angels. The little furry monkeys eyed the two angels, specifically the food in their hands, shyly inching closer and closer. Sera pushed out her hands further out, finding the small critters adorable as they carefully grabbed a fruit or nut one by one. 

Eventually, more and more monkeys gathered by the balcony, almost surrounding it. At the same time, both Adam and Lucifer had slowly and quietly retreated back into the safety of the hut. Michael turned around, a small smile on his face, wondering why the two hadn’t joined them in feeding the monkeys. If anything, those two were usually the most excited about this kind of thing. But when turned to look for both Adam and Lucifer, he found them to be absent from the balcony, and were now inside the hut far away from them. 

Michael was about to ask about their odd behaviour when a startled cry turned his attention towards his left. In front of him, Sera had dropped the nuts and fruit on her hands, some landing on Michael himself, as she tried to reach out for the monkey who snatched the brooch off of her dress, tearing a small hole in it. As she leaned forward to grab the little monkey, another one had snuck close beneath her and tried to grab the shoes off her feet. Michael rushed to help her but then smaller monkeys jumped onto his head to grab the fruits and nuts that landed on his hair. Some others were trying to pull the shiny halo off his head. 

“Wha–,” Michael cried out trying to get the monkeys off of him without hurting them. Suddenly, his left side had become much lighter, and when he turned to look, his already pale face somehow became paler. “My sword!,” he said aloud, panic in his voice. He quickly scanned the canopies to search for the culprit, and eventually found something gold being quickly dragged away from the hut. Without a moment's notice, Michael unfurled his wings, sending some monkeys flying away from him, and rushed after the furry thief, leaving poor Sera to deal with the monkeys, most of which had decided that her shiny halo was something they wanted. 

At the back, far and safe from the chaotic mess that was occurring at the balcony, were Adam and Lucifer cackling and just simply dying from laughter. Adam himself was on the floor, unable to hold himself up any longer, while Lucifer was bracing himself on the wall for dear life. They were even barely laughing at this point, more like wheezing donkeys that were somehow also asthmatic. 

For the two, this was the funniest thing they had seen in their lives. The two most composed and serious angels they knew in a state of absolute panic, not knowing what to do, and their normally perfect form absolutely dishevelled in ways they didn’t realise was possible.

Eventually Michael came back, his sword back and safe with him, now more tightly strapped to his side. The monkeys eventually dispersed, though some remained still hanging onto Sera’s halo, while smaller species had decided that her thick hair was a nice warm place to settle in and refused to leave.

In the end, despite Adam and Lucifer explaining that it was just a silly little prank, Michael had them both sitting on the floor with their head down in front of Sera and forced them to apologise. Sera’s brooch was still missing, so Adam suddenly had a new assignment in the garden, which was to find it within a week until Sera could visit again. As for Lucifer, well, it seemed that Michael had been too lenient with him lately. He was willing to forgive his brother for dumping his work on him today, but he decided to take that back. In fact, Michael remembered that he did have a backlog of very tedious, repetitive work, and that now he was suddenly too busy and tired to do any of them. Thankfully, he had a very capable brother who had plenty of time and energy to spare.

Lucifer looked up from his position, both Sera and Michael looked annoyed at him for his antics, though he could tell by how their gazes weren’t truly hard, and were instead soft at the edges, that the two held a certain fondness towards him. Although, the glint in Michael’s eyes had him a little worried; he could tell that he wasn’t going to be pulling pranks for at least a while.

Lucifer looked up from his position, both Sera and Michael stood in front of him, with Adam hidden between Michael’s wings. His knees were rubbed sore as golden blood easily flowed from his body. Still, he had his wings wrapped protectively around Lilith. Their gazes were absent of that certain fondness he usually found in their eyes, replaced with true anger, hurt and betrayal. Adam, his best friend, refused to even look at him anymore. The freezing gaze in Sera’s eyes had his still beating heart racing in fear; he could no longer tell what the future held for him. 

Then the ground beneath him cracked open.

I love Adam. I do. I, personally, am heavily attracted to annoying, douche characters (romantic or just enjoying their character). Personally, he's one of the best characters in the show, there's a lot of nuance you can pick up from him (though, Viv might have done that on accident). But, what I cannot stand, is that Hazbin Adam, is supposed to be taken from the Bible's Adam.

There are plently of ways you can make a character an asshole or a jerk without completely destroying their source material. Viv completely destroys his source material. See, had he just been bitter and commited genocide because of his hatred for Lucilith or because he thought it was right, that's fine—I can accept that. But he actively enjoys killing sinners and actively participates in every. single. solitary. Seven deadly sin. And that pisses me off. Hazbin Adam took the bones of the story and his character from the bible and then slapped thin meat on it. Hazbin Adam is a complete 180 from Bible Adam.

Now I don't expect this show to have a 1:1 translation to the bible. But it could've been done better.

Because, what do you mean that bible Adam, a man who loved his wife so much he chose to abandon paradise with her, he chose her over god, is a misogynistic fuck boy?? Adam who tended carefully to the Garden of Eden and it's animals, is a lazy fuck who bad mouths people and has nearly no empathy for the people around him. Adam who witnessed the world's first murder, where is first son killed his second, is now a genocidal maniac who thoroughly enjoys killing sinners. He went through a hard life (which he chose) for someone to depict him as THAT.

Oh how I love Adam, yet hate the way he was written. Don't even get me started on Lucifer. Atp, Viv needs to make her own concepts, because she's only taking names and concepts and throwing the rest out.
