I’m gonna identify as white today. I no longer identify with people treating me differently or possibly assuming I’m bad because I’m black. If you tell me I was born black you’re a Nazi who believes in fixed racial biological essentialism. Some people need the concept of race to exist to cope
one of the most disheartening parts of studying feminism is learning that simone de beauvoir was part of the problem.
yes, she is the most influential feminist pioneer and her works helped women in a radical way - but what about her life?
she's 21 and she falls in love with 24 years old sartre - a man who is ugly, "doesn't care about his body", but "with such a male ugliness he becomes charismatic". de beauvoir worships him. she's going to be his caretaker and, sadly, the main pimp of his lovers.
sartre and de beauvoir are in love, but not monogamously; theirs is a polyamorous relationship in theory, and a polygynous one in reality. because sartre may ignore his body and neglect his physical well-being (his teeth are said to be rotten), but he does love other women's bodies.
particularly, he likes two things about women: their hotness and the thrill of their sexual conquest; sartre is harsh with them: he despises ugly women openly, and admits to only care about how beautiful women are before he decides to (assault) court them. he argues that rationality (ideas) are the main domain which concerns him (a male), and irrationality (women's beautiful bodies) is only given to him, a male, when admiring women's hotness.
sartre was just a philosophical snob, in the sense that he wasn't special: a lot of men thought of work and rationality as a masculinity domain while women were supposed to be the beautiful, irrational gift they could take pleasure from at the end of a long day. they were just less sophisticated with their words.
the sexual conquest is a factor graciously granted by de beauvoir, the feminist herself: she's a teacher; she notices VERY young women she deems hot enough for sartre, grooms them, sleeps with them and passes them to the misogynistic asshole (sorry, i already wrote "sartre" too many times). this is a pattern. if sartre cant fuck the girl, he goes for her YOUNGER sister (remember how i said the women noticed by de beauvoir were already very young?)
the irony is that sartre doesnt really cum a lot. like, he is "hard to climax" and "finds sex boring" (!!!!!!). he only likes to a) watch hot women and b) know he can fuck them. the actual fucking, he doesnt care about that much.
and de beauvoir, simone "first honorary feminist" de beauvoir, pimps young women for sartre's wicked schemes. and this is terrifying - because de beauvoir's works are so important to feminism, and yet she supported the bigger enemy of the movement: male sexual entitlement.
i dont really care about recovering her image, or contextualising her actions; this is the work for another person. but i do want everyone to know that a) feminism IS A WORK IN PROGRESS; NEVER THINK THAT "ORIGINAL FEMINISM" WAS BETTER and b) men like sartre are all around you, always. it doesn't matter how much you love them or how smart and charismatic and stunning they are. they are misogynistic. they would not love you if you were a worm - they would not love you if you were ugly. beware of them. don't let female socialization or whatever it is take over your rationality - don't endorse them, don't support them, don't laugh at their sexually objectifying jokes. don't "oh they are kind of sexist but have other qualities" them.
reject them; you can be financially independent from them, and that was something de beauvoir realized to be useful.
now, reject male sexual entitlement.
"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate." - Noam Chomsky
noah fence but genderism literally rots your brain. my nb friend was one of the smartest women I knew for the first two years or so of knowing each other. we talked about religion and spirituality and culture and politics, her insights were so nuanced and interesting.
then she started IDing as nb last summer and it’s like I can’t hold an intelligent, nuanced conversation with her anymore. everything I say gets poorly-informed knee jerk responses and gets completely misinterpreted and misquoted.
Surround yourself with people that promote growth instead of fear

This is the gender split of the overall statistics.

So... I'm about to write something messed up, that I learned today and I'm freaking out. If you're from balkan and you knew this please message me and explain how.
I was on wikipedia, reading the page 'Human' because I was curious what it said, and honestly that article is unhinged and sounds copied from an alien textbook. It goes over the history of human development and at one point starts going over slavery and I accidentally clicked on 'atlantic slave trade'. Since the page was open, I thought, why not learn more about this, always good to know about history of slavery since it set the world up into what it is today.
So I am reading, and it explains how big empires relied on slaves to produce sugar, cotton, and other commodities, and at first trafficked and sold people from Africa for this, but then also incorporated religion as a judgment of who can be a slave. So they weren't supposed to enslave people of their own religion, but could enslave someone they believed to be a heretic. Catholics were enslaving orthodox christians and muslims could enslave shia muslims.
I am reading this and thinking how religion is even more evil than I originally thought and this is disgusting and then I read the words 'balkan slave trade' and I'm just ????. Like what do you mean. I know I havent paid attention in history but come on. That I would surely remember?
So I click it, and find out. In 14th century, balkans were pagans, and there was also 'Bogomilism' religion which meant 'dear to god' and it was anti church, gnostic practice that went against christian hierarchy. Since balkan was on the religious borders of christianity and islam, they were allowed to be taken slaves and were trafficked via port in Dubrovnik. The pagan religion of balkan was the confirmation of their slave status, and Bosnians were most aggressively targeted. Women were trafficked to be house help in Italy, while males were turned Egyptian soldiers. The practice stopped when Ottoman empire claimed balkan in 15th century at which point the slave trade was absorbed into the ottoman slave trade.
I've never even heard of any of that before. I'be been mad about destructiom of pagan religion for years but they actually enslaved and trafficked pagans? I didn't know.
Then I wondered why I didn't know, and asked wikipedia to show me the same article in croatian language. It didn't exist. In fact, the article only existed in english language. I then googled 'balkan slave trade' in croatian. Zero results. Nothing. It wasn't that I didn't pay attention, there are no sources about this written in my language!
We just DON'T TALK ABOUT THIS??!!
Was the only way for me to find out a miniscule chance I stumble on it accidentally on wikipedia? I need more info. Who knew about this and why is it hidden. I need to know everything. I want to understand why things are the way they are.
If you saw me agreeing with being annoyed about wasted helium in a fictional context and were like "I bet she has some more helium based anger in her life" good news LAPD fucked up a raid on a medical facility they thought was a pot farm and flat out ruined thousands of gallons of the stuff.
If Elliot Rodger were alive today he'd either be trans or part of the manosphere. Either way, he'd throw his money away on NFTs.
i didn’t take refuge in “not like other girls” thinking as a kid — i was too laser-focused on trying (and failing) to be normal — but i was mercilessly bullied for being different, a wrong kind of girl. and i know that sure, we all agree bullying is wrong. but i virtually never see that behavior identified as misogynist. i don’t see popular internet posts asking women to examine why they mocked and shunned other girls in school for being the wrong kind of girl, and what that might say about how they view women. i very much doubt anyone has ever sat down one of my bullies and said of their bullying, “your internalized misogyny is showing.” i had and have internalized misogyny too; we all do. i just want to see as much attention to the “you’re not like us” form as i see for the “i’m not like you” form.
“This study examined gender bias in mothers’ expectations about their infants’ motor development. Mothers of 11-month-old infants estimated their babies’ crawling ability, crawling attempts, and motor decisions in a novel locomotor task—crawling down steep and shallow slopes. Mothers of girls underestimated their performance and mothers of boys overestimated their performance. Mothers’ gender bias had no basis in fact. When we tested the infants in the same slope task moments after mothers’ provided their ratings, girls and boys showed identical levels of motor performance.”

Femininity is done to us, not innate. We begin learning our gender roles when we’re learning how to walk and speak. When we know socialization is so pervasive, the idea that gender is an inherent part of us is farcical. When we know that being born female means being taught that we are less-than, the idea that it is ever a privilege to be born female is insulting.
(via radfemmac)
Pretty privilege is such bullshit because the way people will chameleon everything about themselves to get picked by a beautiful woman that they wouldn’t even like if she didn’t look like that while seemingly lacking awareness over that is something out of horror movie like imagine never knowing if people actually like you for you and having everyone treat you like you’re a potential girlfriend whether or not they ever had a chance and regardless of if you ever showed them a drop of interest and just agreeing with you over everything and liking the things you like and constantly trying to mirror you in every way just to get close to you. It’s some psychological horror.
Why are so many terminally online transgender people obsessed with cowboys? The cowboy lifestyle is the antithesis to their own but I don’t think they realize that…
friendship is a lot of work and we live in a world that is trying to use up every available iota of our attention and effort to sell us stuff and shrink us with its shrink ray etc

Small workout to loosen up your legs a bit...
this gaslighting is insane

" 'I want big boobs and a big round butt' is your wife's attempt to express a profound mismatch between body and mind"
men will literally say anything to make their misogyny sound deep and profound lmao
nah man, saying this bs isn't some profound inside into this guy's soul or something. He just wants to look like the stereotypical woman he desires. why can't you just accept that and instead have to make it sound super deep?

All over the world young girls grow up not knowing what a natural woman looks like, in place of an actual face they see altered and sexualized features.
Girls are ingrained from day one, that to be a woman is to perform.

I dislike the way that people dance around the oppression of women when it comes to conversations about history. Lots of people acknowledge that women were seen and treated as property, but the horror of that experience is rarely conveyed. When teaching about women's rolls in ancient cultures there is always that comment about women not being able to own property, that they were property themselves, and were expected to be submissive to men. But what does this actually look like?
It looks like rape. Like mothers being seperated from daughters. It looks like being forced to cohabit with and serve an owner who will force himself on you and breed you like stock. It is the sadness of miscarriage and the realisation that your body won't hold up. It's mutilation and violence. It's watching the deaths of your friends knowing that none of them lived a truly happy life. It's watching your daughter grow up knowing that she will be sold into servitude and raped until she dies, the same fate you face. In some cases you didn't even have a name.
Women's oppression is the oldest form of oppression, and yet we are still so strongly gripped by patriarchy that there is a refusal to acknowledge what that actually means. We have barely even started earning our rights in the west, and our sisters still face the terror of what I have described above. Women are always one step away from losing everything, and yet the movement meant to fight for women's liberation is being overun by men and misogynistic women. It's easier for them to uphold the status quo than challenge it.
Women need to learn their history, the grim and horrifying reality of it. The truth of our existence under patriarchy. If we don't seek out this truth, then history is doomed to repeat.
most things that are worth doing will inconvenience you. preventing environmental destruction will inconvenience you—yes, you, on a personal level. standing up for your rights, humanity, and autonomy as a woman will inconvenience you. making friends, learning new skills, growing things, falling in love....all incredibly inconvenient. I think the best thing to do is to get used to being inconvenienced, because a world of convenient stores and convenient entertainment—getting what you want, when you want it, how you want it, for the right price—is not nourishing or real or ethical.
