My Wednesday Night

Trying to write a paper on First World War poetry while in the midst of an extremely depressed emotional crisis, looking up jokes from the war itself to get me in a better mood. We’ve been reading Ford Madox Ford’s Parade’s End and a bunch of other works, and I had the most ridiculous thing pop into my head:

Somme Do Not

It’s too bad I’m doing the essay prompt on poetry rather than Ford, or that would be a real zinger of a title. It was too good not to share with the internet via my first actual tumblr post. So here you go.

Sometimes I think Eglantine Price and Mary Poppins have tea together.

Hey. You.

Cutie with social anxiety AND/OR zero self esteem.

You ARE cute. I just said so. And I’m - well, never, ever wrong. So there.

And even if “cute” isn’t the yardstick by which you seek any sort of “declaration of value and/or worth” - you are VALUED. You are WORTHY. JUST FOR BEING.

No-one has to PROVE their worth/value/importance/significance. YOU ARE. JUST FOR BEING. THAT’S QUITE SUFFICIENT.

Want to go do great things? Things OTHER PEOPLE think are great? PLEASE DO. HERE. LET ME ASSIST AS NEEDED.

Don’t want to do any of that? GREAT. PLEASE DO. HERE. LET ME HANG OUT WITH YOU AND LAUGH. 

Cuz that’s ALL anyone HAS TO DO: be. Happily. Don’t let ancient religiously-inspired “work ethics” SHAME drive you into a SUICIDAL DEPRESSION.

That’s BULLSHIT. 

Be driven! IF YOU WANT. Have huge goals that make other people shake their heads in disbelief! IF YOU WANT. That’s ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.

So is NOT DOING ANY OF THAT.

And anyone who holds up a “worth” yardstick and compares the Driven with the Not Driven and finds one of them UNWORTHY is a SHITHEEL who needs to get HIT BY A BUS. Maybe a train. Eaten by a shark? 

Ended.

That comparison is awful. DESTRUCTIVE. UNHELPFUL. 

It kills people, ends love, sacrifices children on the altar of ambition.

(And it’s okay to be ambitious - as long as you WANT to be, and don’t feel like you MUST BE in order to satisfy someone else’s DEMANDS.)

I worry about you guys sometimes. Like, a lot. I’ve reached my Quent Crisp-oid zen of “style”. It’s taken 47 years and several suicide attempts, as well as the loss of love, friends, and family. 

I choose not to suffer any of those pains anymore. And I choose my SELF over anyone else’s DEMANDS. IF that dissatisfies them, THAT’S THEIR PROBLEM NOT MINE.

This course of life is MUCH HARDER when you’re younger - I very clearly remember this struggle. But any way I can HELP, I will.

Do you perform? I will come watch and applaud.

Do you write? I will read and enjoy.

Do you sit and “be”? I will sit near you with a book and some tea. 

It’s all the same with me.
