“No,” you whispered. You stared at the doctor’s solemn face, not willing to believe what he’d just told you. “No,” you said more loudly, starting to shake your head now. Your mother’s hand tightened comfortingly around your shoulder but it did little to numb the pain gripping your entire being.

“I’m sorry,” the doctor repeated. “We did everything we could.”

The entire world became muffled to you. The sound of Jimin’s parents crying, the wailing of his little brother. The bustling of the hospital around you. The comforting words your parents were murmuring in your ears. You could hear none of it. All you could hear was the screaming inside of you. All you could hear was your heart tearing in two.  

“No,” you said again, tears tumbling down your face. “He can’t be,” you insisted. “No. You’re lying.” You felt your knees start to weaken, your father’s arms coming around you to stabilize you. “I need to see him. He needs to know I’m here,” you sobbed, knowing how futile your words were. Deep, heart-wrenching sobs tore from your chest as you sank to your knees, the chill of the tile floor biting through your tights. This wasn’t happening. It wasn’t possible. The world couldn’t exist without him. You couldn’t exist without him.

White noise filled your ears as you collapsed to the floor, sobs wracking your body. Everything went out of focus as your parents and the doctor bustled around you, trying to assess if you were physically sound or not. Frenzied questions were thrown at you. Jimin’s family came to your side. But only one thought churned in your mind. Park Jimin was gone. Your boyfriend—your beautiful, sweet, kind, compassionate-to-a-fatal-fault boyfriend—was gone. How would you ever survive this?

“No,” you sobbed, tears leaking out behind your closed eyes. “No, come back. Please,” you whispered. Coldness nipped at your cheek for the briefest moment. You gasped, eyes shooting open as you sat up in bed, your entire body trembling from your nightmare. You looked around your room desperately, the dawn light leaking in through your curtains illuminating it. But you didn’t see the source of the coldness. Of course you wouldn’t, you thought. You’d have to wait for Halloween for that.
