The first thing Jess noticed after entering the fantasy section of the library was that it was dusty,( why isn’t it as clean as the rest of the library? Oh right, people have labeled them as uncool.)
She didn’t dwell on that thought for too long and occupied herself with scanning through the spines of the books on the shelves.
“ Ah hah! Found you!” She whisper yelled at no one in particular when she found the book she’d been looking for. “ Now all that’s left is to look for an excluded area to sit and get lost in this beauty”
Maybe people would think she’s crazy. Well, anyone would really, she was talking to a book after all. She knew this… did she care? No, absolutely not.
“ ugh I don’t want to be disturbed by students coming around though.”
She settled for sitting against a shelf and hugged the book to her chest with so much care that it could be mistaken for her personal diary.
She had told Rachel, her best friend that she’d be at the library. They’d met when they were 5 and just clicked instantly since they met. You couldn’t blame her for calling Rachel her best friend.
She found a corner far away from the students in the library. Slipping down against the shelf, she opened the book and got lost into the universe she wanted to.
She didn’t keep track of time, why would she do that when she would rather live another life? As another person.
“ ahem”
Too lost in the book she had memorised by heart.
“ Ahem” a little louder this time.
While Jess picked up her head to see who had the ruined her perfect visualisation of the story, she let out a strained grunt. (Ugh, my neck is cramped.)
She looked at the man with an annoyed expression while he countered her stare with an amused glint in his eyes.
“ So, are you gonna let me grab the book I came here for or are you going to pretend to be annoyed at me?” He asked, his tone laced with cheekiness.
(I thought no one came here anymore. Great, now I have to look for another spot.)
“ Well, Miss believe it or not, people do come here and hey if it bothers you that much I don’t come here often.” He says with seriousness lacing his voice.
“ oh damn, did I just think out loud? Uhm no It’s okay! The library is meant for students, is it not?” She looks at him as he nods at her “ and no you don’t bother me, I’m sorry I’ll move.”
He goes over to the other side of the shelf while she continues fumbling with the hem of her top.
“ Aiden” she looks at him with her eyebrows slightly raised.
He gives her a sweet chuckle, like the one you have when watching a child do something adorable.
“ Aiden’s my name. So are you gonna tell my yours or am I going to call you miss?”
(Ugh, damn him for being a tease.)
“ The name is Jessica. You can call me Jess, like everyone else does”.
“ Okay, cool. So what were you reading?” Aiden tried to strike a conversation.
“ Oh this?” She pauses and waves the book around “ It’s nothing, just the cliché heartbreak story of how they meet, fall in love, realise it, try to make it work but come to realisation that it’s breaking them apart. They let go of each other, even if there was love.”
“ Will have to read that before I make any comment” he states, while slides down the shelf opposite to her.
“ Well duh you’d have to.” She resists the strong urge to roll her eyes at him. Stop rolling your eyes at people, Jess. It’s not polite. She could hear her mom’s voice saying this.
Jess’ hand flies to her hoodie’s pocket, her phone was vibrating.(why is it so hard for people to put their phones on silent in the library. )
The caller id read Rachel 💕. The thought of declining and continuing with the book as she was doing before the near stranger popped up was tempting, but she decided against it.
“ Hello?” She speaks while she covered her mouth and phone.
“ Hey Jess!!! Why are you almost whispering and why can’t I find you at your dorm?” Rachel fired question after question.
“ woah woah woah, calm down Rach. I’m at the library… I told you remember? I swear you have some extreme bad memory.” She says with a slight laugh, which to be honest came out more as a puff of breath.
“ Oh right, what did I expect? Meet me at the cafe across our campus at 6? “ Rachel asked with a chuckle.
“ Yeah sure, I’ll be there” Jess said looking at her wrist watch. 12, it read. (I’ve got time to finish a few chapters , sprint to the dorm and freshen up. )
“ Ok great! I’ll see you there! Bye!” (Well, Rachel’s unusually cheerful today. What do you expect from a social butterfly, Jess?
Ugh I better get back to the dorm, I wanna get some shut eye before I meet up with Rach. )
Jess gets up from her spot against the shelf, she stretched her arms above her head and heard her joints pop with a satisfying hum.
“ leaving already? Guess you’re tired of me already” Aiden sighed , all the while feigning the expression of a kicked puppy.
“ you wish” she says while rolling her eyes. She shook her head in exasperation.
“ My friend called & said she wants to meet up, I wanna catch some sleep before that” she looks at him, and it hits her only then how much charm he carried with him. Not only was his aura bright, he just exuded comfort.
“ Ah well, I was hoping to get more about that book you were reading out of you
considering you didn’t hear me.”
He says wistfully with a hint of teasing.
Jess would’ve laughed at her expression upon hearing that. Her eyes widened comically, that comment had caught her off guard. Not sure how to respond she just gave a tiny resolute nod.
She turned on her heel and exited the library. Her head hanged low and she felt like her face was on fire. (Someone douse me in ice cold water. )
