Waiting For Our Storms To Pass

Trope: Enemies to lovers
Synopsis: Lost in a storm of trying to be someone youâre not, a drive with your worst enemy might just be enough to let the snow settle and give you some clarity.Â
Warnings: profanities, mentions of another member, cheating, brief mentions of death, extreme weather, nicknames (princess), kissing, unrequited love.
Word Count: 3.1k
Network: @deoboyznet
A/N: This is purely fictional and is not an accurate depiction of the individuals mentioned. Not proofread. Also, clearly I know nothing about the weather but letâs just go with it for the sake of the plot. Please remember that the only reason you should change who you are is to become the best version of yourself and not to please others. 18+ content, Minors DNI.
This is dedicated to the lovely @from-izzy <3 (yep I'm your secret santa!!) I really enjoyed exploring this genre and I sincerely hope you find a way to enjoy it :) Happy New Year!
âNo, no, no, no, no, please-âÂ
Youâve been trying to start your car for the past 10 minutes, but you havenât gotten anything more than a sputter of the engine. A yell of frustration rips from your throat, and you stomp your foot onto the floor of the car as you slump forward against the wheel.Â
Youâre shivering and on the verge of tears in your useless excuse of a car, and you begin to wonder if your week could get any worse. Firstly, you missed out on an internship because you didnât have the right connections. Secondly, your parents called to let you know that they wouldnât be able to fly into town for the holidays, leaving you to curl up in your apartment all alone. Next, youâve begun to suspect that your boyfriend is cheating on you.Â
And now, the universe has just smacked you with dreadful weather and you have no means of getting home safely.Â
You watch as the snow gets heavier, and you curse at yourself for making the effort to attend a class in-person when you couldâve skipped it like nearly everyone else did, even if there wasnât an official announcement from your lecturer. It doesnât pay to be a people-pleaser, you think.Â
You dial your boyfriendâs number, holding your phone to your ear as it rings, but he doesnât pick up. You try again, and after the first few rings, he picks up, and you heave a sigh of relief.Â
âBabe, where are you now?â
âIâm at Juyeonâs place- why do you ask?âÂ
âUm,â you hesitate, already anticipating that heâs gonna disappoint you yet again, âI-Iâm stuck on campus because my car wonât start and the snowâs really coming in. Could you come get me, please?â
You hear the rustle of bed sheets on the other line, and Hyunjae groans.Â
âCanât right now- weâre pretty swampedâŠâÂ
Your heart sinks in your chest, and right at that moment, you hear someone giggling on the other line. A woman.Â
âHyunjae, is someone there with you-â
âHey- I gotta go, Iâll call you.â And he hangs up on you, leaving you to freeze in your car.Â
Tears begin to prick at your eyes and you huddle your knees to your chest. âHow did you manage to lose this one, y/n?â you whisper. The sound of the winds howling isnât nearly enough to drown out the thoughts of failing to find love and being all alone for eternity. Afterall, Itâs impossible to seek something without even knowing what it looks like.
You nearly jump out of your skin at the blare of a car horn, and you roll down your frosted window to get a look at whoever honked at you only to sigh in annoyance when you take in his unmistakable smirk.
Kim Sunwoo, childhood best friend turned bad boy and bane of your existence, sits in the car next to yours. The things he did always brought out the worst in you- invading your space, ridiculing you for your taste in men, interrupting dates, you name it- and heâs been doing all of it for his own amusement for years.Â
You have no idea what brought this kind of behaviour on. As kids, the both of you were inseparable, pairing up for class projects, screaming playfully at each other during dodgeball, and having little conversations about your futures. But, things changed when the both of you entered middle school- you got into boys, and he got into trouble. Even till today, youâre stuck in the same pattern, because no matter how hard you tried to shake him off, he would follow you. God knows how he even managed to follow you to your dream college on the other side of the country and continue to taunt you. Gone is the sweet boy who used to keep a hair tie on his wrist in case you needed it.Â
âStuck, princess?â he taunts.Â
âShut up.â
âHow rude,â he tuts, tilting his head, âI was literally asking if you were stuck and I was about to offer you a ride.â
âIâd never go anywhere with you, Kim Sunwoo,â you snap, âdonât you have some daft bimbo to screw with? Maybe some fratâs house to vandalise? Typical bad boy shit?â
âI could, but not right now. Talking to you like this is fun enough as it is,â he teases, and you nearly pray that you freeze to death. He laughs at the disgusted look on your face and waves you over, âcome on, Iâll give you a lift.â
âOver my dead body,â you snarl.Â
âWhy not?,â he pouts, feigning concern, âthe heatingâs on blast and Iâve got snow tyres.âÂ
âIâm perfectly fine,â you huff, ânow, fuck off and move along.â
âSo⊠youâre not shivering and on the brink of death by hypothermia?â
âWill you just shut the fu-â
âTake it or leave it, ice princess,â he smirks.Â
You hate yourself for doing this, but alas, desperate times call for desperate measures. You try to roll your window back up as much as you can, grab your belongings from the back as you get out of your car, and you trudge towards his mustang.Â
The moment you slide into the passenger seat, youâre welcomed by the blast of heat from the vents, and itâs finally warm enough to rid yourself of your coat. You make the mistake of turning to look at Sunwoo, who stares right back at you with a triumphant smile on his stupid face.Â
âYouâre welcome-â
âJust shut up and drive.â
He pulls the car out of the parking lot, revving the engine and speeding off into the dark, cold night, and you brace yourself for the storm ahead.
For the first few minutes, you sit in silence, directing your attention to the snowfall outside until he initiates conversation. âGot any plans for New Yearâs?â he asks. You roll your eyes and shift in your seat, refusing to answer him and you continue to fix your gaze on the snow as it passes your window.Â
âYou really arenât gonna speak to me at all?â he presses. You figure that this could go on forever, so you release a loud sigh, coming up with a reply without even sparing him a glance. âNo, Iâm on my own.â
âOh?â he says, quirking an eyebrow and you hate that he finds joy in your misery, âis that so?â
âWhat do you want from me, Sunwoo?â
âNothing, Iâm just making small talk⊠Sometimes I just might not be the asshole you make me out to be, yâknow,â he mumbles, and you shoot him a glare instead of thinking about apologising. He puts the radio on, a song by Snow Patrol comes on, and youâre suddenly reminded that it was a song you particularly liked during your childhood. You wonder if Sunwoo remembers, but you donât see a point in trying to find out.Â
âWell, maybe if you didnât do things a typical asshole would do, I wouldnât have judged you so quickly,â you argue.Â
âWhatever you say, princess,â he teases, and you cringe.Â
âDonât call me that,â you retort, and he merely chuckles at your reaction.Â
You notice that even when heâs trying to mess with your head and he only has one hand on the wheel, heâs surprisingly careful on the road, but you wonât give him credit for that. You turn your head slightly to look at him, and through the years, youâve never actually bothered to really get a good look at his features. Other than the stronger jawline, he hasnât changed too much. His lips are still plump, and his eyebrows have maintained their shape and thickness- but thereâs something different about his eyes, and you canât quite identify what it is.Â
Thereâs no point dwelling on it, you think, heâs a different person now. You think you may have loved Sunwoo at some point before things changed, but what did you know about love?Â
You pull yourself out of your thoughts, and you focus your gaze back onto the road ahead.
âSo,â he quips, âwhy am I the one rescuing you instead of that boyfriend of yours?â
âI wouldnât go there If I were you, Sunwoo,â you warn, the feeling of unease already creeping in, but he continues.Â
âWas he busy tonight? Doing something important? Doing someone-âÂ
âSunwoo, please-âÂ
âWhat a surprise,â he drawls, âpretty boy canât come rescue his girlfriend because heâs busy screwing other chicks.â
âWill you stop-â the reminder of being tossed aside for someone else begins to overwhelm you, but Sunwooâs attacks keep coming.
âHeâs such a jerk, and the fact that you try to convince yourself that heâs not just makes you stupid as well.â
You turn your body to face him, retorting with a glare,âwell, it seems that you would know how jerks behave, Sunwoo.â
âAt least I donât try to delude myself into thinking otherwise,â he counters, raising his voice slightly.
âYou shit on every guy I date but,â you yell, âjust so you know, your opinion means jackshit to me.â
âOh, just like how you mean jackshit to every guy you date?âÂ
His words cut through you deeper than you expect them to, and the realisation that heâs right seizes your chest.Â
âStop the car.â
âExcuse me-â
âJust stop the car, damn it!â You shout.Â
You get out of the car before it can come to a complete stop, leaving your coat behind, preferring to brave the storm rather than to remain in the suffocating warmth of Sunwooâs car. âFuck,â he curses, grabbing your coat and scrambling to get out of his car to go after you.
âY/n, are you fucking crazy?â he shoutsÂ
âYes!â you scream, trying to hasten your pace,Â
âJust come back, itâs fucking freezing!â
âLeave me alone!â you cry.Â
You try to break into a run, not caring if you look absolutely ridiculous while going against the wind, and Sunwoo swears as heâs forced to catch up.Â
Battling the winds, you run as fast as your body allows you to, but youâre too blinded by rage to spot the black ice ahead of you. You lose your footing on the ice, yelping as you slip and brace yourself, but your head never hits the ground.Â
Sunwooâs got one arm around your waist and a hand gripping your upper arm, hauling you back onto your feet. He huffs, picking your coat off the icy road and wrapping it tightly around your shoulders. âYouâre fucking insane,â he rasps, hunching over and resting his hands on his knees as he catches his breath.
You clutch the seams of your coat, shivering from the force of the winds, but aside from the cold biting at your cheeks, youâre feeling too many things at once. An otherwise touching gesture plunges you into confusion and frustration- if he had hated you for all these years, gone to great lengths to bring you misery and probably wouldnât care if you were left to die alone, why the hell would he even bother to chase you in the midst of a snowstorm to make sure you didnât freeze to death?Â
You hate that heâs messing with your head like this, and you take a step away from the boy in front of you, and you demand answers.Â
âWhere did we go wrong, Sunwoo?âÂ
He looks up at you, straightening his posture, and when heâs facing you properly, you continue to confront him.Â
âWe started off as friends, then suddenly you change and weâre at each otherâs necks, and I know for a fact that Iâm not the one who started it.â
Sunwoo looks like heâs just been slapped across the face, his expression turning into one of disbelief, but you donât even notice.Â
âYou arenât the boy you used to be. We used to be inseparable, but now you do nothing but follow me literally everywhere to make my life a living hell,â youâre tired, exasperated, and you just need an answer from him., "tell me why you had to change."
Donât put this all on me- weâve both changed, he thinks.Â
âY/n-â he starts.Â
âTell me!â
âBecause after all this time and what weâve been through, how the hell could you still choose anyone but me?â he shouts.
The sudden change in his demeanour stuns you, youâre unsure if you heard him correctly, but Sunwooâs pained expression shocks you more than anything.Â
âIâve always been right with you, y/n,â he says, his voice still loud but shaken with emotion, âdo you know how it feels to watch you throw yourself at literally anyone else time and again when Iâm the one whoâs been trying to keep up and be with you every step of the way?
âIt fucking hurts to know that Iâve never been an option for you. No matter how differently I try to act, trying to be just like all those jerks you went after, people like Lee Hyunjae- fuck- I sunk to unimaginable levels just so youâd look at me.â Tears run down his cheeks, and he shakes as he unleashes years of pent up desperation. âYes, I have changed. But thatâs not fucking fair, y/n. Donât fucking put this all on me when I have watched you change for him- for all of them!â
You flinch at his outburst, and no words come to mind when you try to retaliate. You have no defence. You realise now that Sunwoo is right, and the awareness of whatâs become of you is crippling. And right now, you canât ever bear to face him.Â
âYou never had to, you know,â he says quietly, âyou were perfect- youâre still perfect to meâŠâ
The words that leave his lips have you turning back towards him, and your heart aches in your chest. Heâs staring right back at you, and you let out a quiet gasp of recognition. His eyes look different than before. Though tear-filled, you realise that youâre looking into the eyes of the boy you desperately missed- warm, hopeful, loving.Â
âI have changed myself thousands of times just so Iâd get someone to stay, but none of them have, Sunwoo.â
âI stayed,â he whispers, and you feel like you could shatter if someone so much as lay a finger on you.Â
âHell- Iâve kept up with you through all those changes, but the one thing that hasnât changed is the way I feel for you.â
Youâre so overcome by your emotions- sorrow, guilt, regret- and theyâre building too quickly for you to figure out what to do with yourself.
Sunwoo knows that youâre in just as much pain as he is, and he just needs to make you realise that youâll never have to twist yourself into a different person for anyone else ever again. He approaches you, raising his rough hands cup your cheeks, and before you can attempt to break free from his grasp again, he closes the gap between you, and his lips engulf yours.Â
Your breath hitches, you raise your fists to thump against his chest and push him away, but you pause. You feel like you should hate this a lot more than you do, but you canât help but relax into the kiss.Â
Your frozen exterior crumbles as warmth floods throughout your body, and you let your eyelids flutter shut as the ice melts from your eyes, trickling down your cheeks in gentle currents. It all feels so sincere, familiar, and comforting, as if youâre right where youâre meant to be.
The both of you pull apart for air, but Sunwoo doesnât let go of you. He keeps his eyes on yours as he caresses your cheeks, and your heart pounds when a smile grows on his face- his bright, genuine, unchanging smile, just the way itâs been at the beginning.
Everything seems to go quiet around you- the howling winds have stopped their abuse, the snow has gotten lighter, and suddenly you can see a lot more clearly. Â
Overwhelmed by emotion, you fall to your knees, and Sunwoo rushes to kneel with you. His warm hands find their way back to the apples of your cheeks, his thumbs wiping your tears as you sob, and he lets his forehead rest against yours.Â
âOpen your eyes,â he pleads.
Tearful eyes meet his, and you keep crying as he kisses your tears away. You feel absolutely foolish for not seeing the signs earlier, and your heart wrenches at the fact that youâve lost all of this time with him because you were chasing people who couldnât give you what you needed.
âHow can we go back?â you sob, âI donât really know who I am anymore.â
âYouâre the person I fell in love with,â he whispers, running a hand up and down your back to soothe you, ânone of those guys were worth changing for. But I promise you- I'll be the one whoâs worth staying the same for.âÂ
He moves his hands to hold yours, interlocking your fingers and squeezing gently. âJust give us a chance,â he begs, âplease⊠donât make me waste another minute without you.â
With that, you throw arms around him, clumsily locking your lips with his and his hands rest on the small of your back and the back of your head, pulling you flush against him. His hands slide up, threading his fingers through your hair, and you continue to cling to him like heâs gonna slip away from your grasp at any moment.Â
A whine leaves your lips when you pull away, wishing you could hold each other forever, but you donât realise that your hair has become a complete mess.Â
âCome here,â he laughs.Â
He tugs you closer, and he pulls his sleeve back to pull something off his wrist. A hair tie.Â
You keep your eyes on him as he reaches around you and gathers your hair into a ponytail, putting it together to the best of his abilities, and your heart beats harder at the gesture.Â
âCome on,â he says, grabbing your hands and pulling you onto your feet, âletâs get you home before we freeze our asses off.â
âNever let me go,â you plead, and he holds your face in his hands again to plant a kiss against your forehead.Â
âWouldnât dream of it,â he whispers. Â
Itâs absolutely frightening to be on our own, to be unsure of which paths to take and paralysed by hesitation. Perhaps if we give ourselves time and wait for the storms in our hearts to pass, our doubts and fears will disappear once the snow settles. Weâll wait, and weâll take a run at life as soon as things are clear.Â
Towards the places where weâre meant to be.Â

how blessed i am to have you beside me when real life doesn't work out. how blessed i am to be able to go on the main chat and just be myself. how blessed i am to be able to call you my friends. how blessed i am to be accepted by people over the internet, who ended up supporting me in one of the hardest times of my life.
i love you all. i'm sorry that i'm unable to include everyone but i hope you know that in friendship groups, everyone has an effect on one another. even if person a isn't close to person c, person b may be the reason why you're still in the same group together. we all influence each other and i love you all so much.
i'm so sorry for everything.

"So what? That's it?"
The solemn tone in his voice makes the hues of orange and pink in the sky behind him take away the beauty of the scene you both love. It seemed that even the birds that would usually sing beautifully at this time stopped as soon as you opened the door of your house, knowing well who used his entire fist to bang on your door.
Sunwoo's bangs stuck to his forehead well, showing the physical exertion that his body took to get to your house. His school blouse is half untucked and you realise that maybe he rushed out of gym class in the last period because of his mismatched buttons and how his tie wasn't around his collar properly. His eyes flared with a hint of sadness though the confusion and anger masked most of the emotion behind. Your eyes diverted down to his untied shoelace. Usually, you would scold him and he would give that annoying smile to you, shrugging his shoulders and being completely relaxed whilst answering you with a "You're going to do it for me anyways." Judging by his slumped-over school bag, you guessed that he probably threw it to your 'welcome' carpet as soon as he arrivedâeven though he knew that he probably wasn't considering that you've been avoiding his entire presence for a whole month.
But even when Sunwoo looks at you with that heartbroken gaze straight to your tired, cold eyes, you don't utter any words to him. The slight bounce of your head made him turn his head away, clenched fists beside his body. You also found your arms crossing around your waist, palms hooked around your figure and your fingers wrapped around your body to ground the tears that you knew would flow if you didn't keep telling yourself to 'keep it together'.
"Don't you think I deserve some kind of explanation?"Â
Just from a glance at him, you note the tiredness on his face even with his furrowed eyebrows. Not once did he raise his voice at you even though you can see how he's holding back with how tense his jaw is.
"God, Sunwoo." You exclaim to him with a sarcastic laugh after, "I get that we literally became the best of friends as soon as we met two months ago but shit happens and you can't expect an explanation for everything that happens."
"Of course not!" Sunwoo's voice rises though it doesn't seem to shock you. "Shit happens, I know! But at the same time, I never thought our friendship was so weak and insignificant that you could ignore me for more than a month. I know you read my messages! The app can't show me that but I know!"
"Ok fine, I did!" You spill the truth that you've been holding back. "What are you going to do about it? Theyâre my messages, not yours!"
Sunwoo didn't know how to counter that. Maybe there wasn't a way to counter the statement because it's true. But you both knew that the unresponded messages were only the tip of the iceberg of why Sunwoo finally decided to confront you for your isolation from him.
"What happened?" Fragile and weak, shoulder dropping closer to the ground, "Talk to me. I'm here for you."
And he breaks.Â
The tears that he only released in his bedroom were finally showing itself. He didn't think that it would be infront of you first. He thought that maybe his other friends would see it first but that one tear that escaped was the start of his waterfall.Â
"You wouldn't understand." You slightly scowl at the innocent boy, forcing the words between your teeth, "I mean that wholeheartedly and not from some cliche teen romance movie shit."Â
The venomous response he gets to his genuine question only makes Sunwoo frown further and he verbally starts to express the tears from his eyes. Seeing him cry and swallow down his whimpers struck a chord in your own confusing heart as well.
The truth is that you're scared.Â
You're scared as hell.
You're scared of the fact that even though you met Sunwoo two months ago, you grew so fast to him.
There were days that sometimes he would understand you more than your best friend of five years.
Do you know how scary that is?Â
To connect with someone so fast that sometimes all you want to do after a long day is to text them about all the minuscule things to the bigger things that would make your jaw drop.
To open that messaging app, spam him with short sentences, and feel the guilt of passing the dot beside the other messages that your other friends sent first, to just open your conversation with him first?
The confusion that you finally felt at home with someone so quickly and that you felt that when you never expected it to happen? All you ever wanted from your relationship with others was to be included.
Kim Sunwoo did just that in a span of a month compared to five years.
You would spend nights figuring out how it happened but no matter how much you thought of it, you couldn't find that one specific message and timestamp both in your phone or memories of how you would wake up and just hope for a chaotic message from him.Â
One mutual turned to two, which turned to three and the euphoric feeling increased exponentially. However, so did the fear escalated further when you got included in the group chat with the friends that he had before you both met.Â
You have always been amazed at their friendship. Despite the small age difference here and there between each person, despite using honorifics to still respect that age gap, it never stopped the radiant chaoticness that they brought everywhere they went, in everything they did. Their personalities that are so different but work together so well to the point that it makes you believe that opposites do attract.
Their differing body clocks that would mean that the group chat never dies no matter where the clock hands land. Being able to connect with them, making genuine bonds through all the bullying (that is full of love), heart-to-heart or supportive conversations, relatable life struggles relating to schoolwork and living, fangirling about their achievements in life, asking for help with things that youâre confused about, the fun flirtings that would leave the others speechlessâyou realise that this is all you've ever wanted and the fact that you received it when you were at your lowest guard, scared every single part of you.
The very first few moments when you came, you were jealous of their bond, wondering how they became so close even through their differences. Then, as time passed and you inserted yourself in the conversations, it felt like you were flying across a cloudless sky, feeling reassured that your wings wouldn't get wet from the rain. After, you became scared of your presence with them, scared of ultimately breaking them apart.
But, do you know the irony of it all?Â
You were the one who decided to ignore not only Sunwoo but every single kind-hearted person there. No one pushed that on you. But whenever they would post their photos on the group chat for distribution, reminisce their memories together, or when you would hear one of them talk about it with people outside the group chat, you find yourself jealous and hurt that you weren't part of it all.
Does anyone understand the confusion, guilt, self-hate and pain that it all brings?
"How do you know if I would understand or not if all you've done is left me on read in an app that can't even tell me that?"
Your breath hitches and your voice box only lets out a small gasp. Everything Sunwoo is saying is correct because everything is due to your insecurities and fear that everything will just fall apart. You truly believe in the fact that nothing lasts forever. That belief alone is the reason why you have trouble making friends.
Because for you, why would you put yourself in so much happiness that your cheeks would hurt from the laughter and smiles when you know that everything would end anyway?
But at the same time, your heart is trying to pull you in the opposite direction. Because in a similar logic, if you know that nothing lasts forever, why can't you just accept that fact and cherish him, the memories and the times that you could potentially spend together?
"Sunwoo," right now, you allowed the facts to speak out for you, refusing to follow what you truly wanted, "you have been blessed with the most lovely, encouraging and supportive group of friends. You and me," your index finger points to your chest after pointing at his, "we have experienced totally different friendships."
Sunwoo is beyond confused. Of course, he would be. You've never even given him a chance to understand your experiences. What you did was isolate yourself from him and the group chat that has given you hope that maybe, just maybe, this is your group of people. Your heart broke beyond what you could even comprehend when some of them personally sent a message to you, asking your whereabouts and hoping that you were doing well. On lonely nights as you monitor the cheerful group chat, all you can do is intertwine your hands together around your phone, the tips of your fingers turning white due to the pressure as you hold yourself back from including yourself in the fun conversation.
"Sorry but maybe I'm just not ready."
Sunwoo watches your blank stare, your eyes that used to be so full of glimmer and happiness are now void. He took in the fact that you were probably half-conscious at the current moment as you just stared at whatever was just above his shoulder in the distance but he didn't need to turn around to know that you were not focusing on anything in particular.
He wipes the tears that clouded his view of you before carefully asking, "For what?"Â
Your shoulders rise but they hold their position for a second longer before falling back down, "For whatever this friendship is."
Your eyes catch the way his eyebrows crash together as well as the audible nervous gulp and shaky lips, "Is our friendship just 'whatever' to you now?" The volume decreases with each word in the question.
The heaviness in your heart that you carried the past month started to take its toll on your head and you closed your eyes to focus on the chilling wind hitting your face. Sunwoo watches quietly, still waiting patiently for you to ground yourself back to the present. The boy watches your arms untangle from your chest, dropping back to the side of your body and he finds himself wishing that if he stepped forward and opened his arms, you would reciprocate the same loving action back.Â
But he knew you wouldn't. Not now when you flutter your eyes open so delicately with an emotion that he has never seen from you.
"I'll always love you, Sunwoo.âÂ
These are the words that manage to both break and put the pieces of his heart back together. There is no way he could admit it to you now, especially with how things are going but deep down in the lonely past month that he spent, itâs the exact words that he has been waiting and wanting to say to you as he wishes that he could hear it back from you. Now that he has heard it straight from you, not through written text or a voice message, but face to face, his world starts to rebuild itself slowly.
You both only focused on each otherâs faces like it would be the last time you both would ever be able to do so. You straighten your back, no longer slumping and cowering away in fear now that youâve said the words that have always been on your mind. With your slightly newfound confidence and a somewhat lighter heart, Sunwoo sees a bit of colour start to paint your once-pale skin. Your slightly pink cheeks that are in the same beautiful shade as your lips. Your eyelashes that flutter silently in the cold weather around youâand he finds himself wanting to bring your body in a hug to bring some warmth for you bothâand finally, your eyes that held all the stories, ones spoken and unspoken, the same ones that he would eventually find himself thanking the teacher for assigning your seat next to his.Â
In the silence that held many meanings for you both, you observe your best friend as well. Your neck tilts slightly to accommodate the height difference, watching how some of his bangs are now free from his sweat and are now in a mess due to the wind, his big round eyes that would disappear mischievously whenever he would tease you about something, only to soon have his bright, wide smile mirrored back to your face. You realise now more than ever that you may never see that cute gummy smile of his anytime soon.Â
But you needed to be true to yourself. You needed to figure out your feelings first before you could commit to another friendship that could tear you apart once again.Â
You needed to learn to love yourself again before you could go and introduce yourself to others.
Through your friendship with Sunwoo, though short and sweet but still special, you promise that after this, you will never put someone else in this kind of feeling ever again. Things would change from now on and thereâs very little that you can do regarding your friendship with Sunwoo now, especially when you were the one who made the mess.
Maybe now after this revelation, he wouldnât want to be near you anymore or maybe he will wait for you. Maybe he wonât tap on your shoulder anymore during class when youâre dazing off into the gloomy sky and just let you get in trouble with your teacher who will have called your name multiple times. Maybe as he passes by the hallway, his arms around his friends, he wonât even spare you a glance, reserving his smile for just them instead.
But again, thereâs nothing you can do now. The words have been said and actions regarding the words have already been carried out.
Did you regret it?Â
The shortest and fastest answer: Yes.Â
Maybe you couldâve just come clean and told him how you feel. Sunwoo would then do that thing where you both would walk to the nearby park by the school and listen to your rants patiently, straightening and bending his legs as he sits on the swing to give him a bit of momentum, nodding thoughtfully to your worries. Then after, he would stretch his arm from behind the chains and pat your slumped back rhythmically. Just like every single time after that, you would both go for a bubble tea run before Sunwoo would panic text you about an assignment or homework that he forgot to complete and you would panic with him, helping him through the all-nighter that you both have gotten concerningly used to.
âŠgosh, why didnât you just do that?
If this friendship was going to end anyway, why didnât you take the easier, non-confusing, less painful way for the both of you? Why did you have to drag others through so much heartbreak just because of your cowardice? Why did you have to be so unthoughtful and unfair to everything and everyone that you genuinely love? You don't care if you have to get hurt as long as they're fine.
PleaseâŠjust not them.
You are so unfair, unkind and selfish. He was the one pulling the weight of the friendship and you led him on blindly with that fake smile of yours, pretending that everything was fine. The audacity of you to even wish during the times when you cried alone underneath the blanket that he would forgive you.Â
You wouldnât blame him if he didnâtâthat thought also extended to your other ten dear friends too.
A few more minutes pass and you are the one who breaks the prolonged eye contact after putting the features of his face into your memory. Sunwoo could only let out a solemn smile, his feet planted still on the ground even though his legs shook a little bit and he clasped his hands together infront of him, looking down at the grey pavement of your entrance for the first time since he arrived.
âOkay.â
The words seemed more permanent than both of you liked but it was the only response that Sunwoo could give to you at the moment. He missed the way you dropped your head to face the ground. Your body moves to lean over to one side of the doorframe, both your hands reaching over to clench the white metal to keep your posture and emotions somewhat stable.
The bag that was in your field of vision gets dragged away from your figure and you know from the shadow that Sunwoo is dusting off the dirt, ready to walk away for the dayâfrom the friendship that you ruined. The sun behind him has almost fully hidden itself behind the taller buildings that you would have always thanked whenever you were in your room, wanting to get away from its scorching heat and intense light but now, you wished it would stay around longerâŠjust a little bit longer.Â
But maybe, Sunwoo is your sun and he hears your internal pleading because he steps forward, his everyday school sneakers coming into your view.Â
âWhenever youâre ready, alright?â
Maybe it was your growing heartache and headache but the way he mutters it, just a volume above the singing crickets as the birds retreat their song for the day, seemed genuine. Most importantly though, it didnât seem permanent at all. Itâs almost as if Sunwoo is telling you indirectly that he will always wait for you. To tell you to figure out your internal fight first but that heâll always give you a helping hand and that boba treat if you ever call him for help. To tell you that he will always get you in trouble during class and stick his tongue out if heâs successful. To tell you to stop ignoring him in school now that he is getting some sort of closure from you.Â
Thankful for the memories and comfort, your head rises from the depths of your darkness and Sunwoo shines brighter than the huge star behind him. For what you both know will be the last one in a while, Sunwoo purposely lets out a loud sigh, one that is playful and is accommodated by the upturned corner of his lips before resting his open palm on the top of your head.
âI will always wait for you.âÂ
To his words, the stars in your eyes fell and for once, you were glad that you finally showed your tears to him. You hoped that he would know just how much you are genuinely sorry for all of this. Giving him an actually convincing nod that he seemed to accept. You watch your best friend stuff his hands inside his pocket, turning away from your front door and walking his way back down the stairs to being just classmatesâjust for now.
No more words were exchanged after and everything seems to pass by excruciatingly slow. Neither of you had the courage and strength left in your being to call out for the other anymore. Sunwoo would go back to his friends and you would be left alone but thatâs alright because you love them all. You would gladly kick yourself out of the picture if it meant that there would be no awkwardness or unsettling feeling in the group.
As soon as Sunwoo disappears from your sight, he takes all the happiness and warmth that he would offer to you unconditionally, but you also hope that he left all his worries and frustrations here at your front door. The clicking of the door when you close it is empty and the dragging steps that you take to the other end of the hallway to your room are still heavy. You had no more words for the devil in your head that laughed at you victoriously, the insecurities bouncing from the purple walls of your room as you sat at the edge of your bed.
But when your phone turns on with a notification that you didnât expect, you know that the angel inside your head will be working their hardest to strengthen your mindset. There, visible from your lock screen is a new message from Sunwoo. Between your sniffles, you manage to let out a momentary chuckle at the new profile picture: Sunwoo behind you wrapping his arms around your neck, holding his phone out on selfie mode for the both of you to smile atâitâs the latest picture of you both. Your eyes then divert to the new message, one that would push you to keep going until you could face him once more and be back in his arms:
âIâll always love you too.â

Even you found this situation absurd.
How could something so beautiful cause you to have tissues and wet towels lying around your heating body? Itâs bittersweet to know that the things that made you enwrap in the layer of heated and weighted blankets are the same ones every year that fall nicely from the hues of orange and red sky. Maybe itâs the headache or the jealousy as you hear the excited shrills of the children outside the window having fun and throwing the cold ball of death to each otherâs faces. Itâs probably also the fact that youâre at the time of your month, the cramps around the underside of your stomach in addition to the scratchy itch on your throat that makes swallowing hard.Â
In the end, this yearâs Christmas has been wasted and you could only cry under the sheets alone, convincing your parents not to enter as you knew they had to return to work as soon as the holidays ended. You truly regretted your past naive and idiotic self for making a snow angel without proper winter battle clothes. The effect took a massive toll on your body, especially with the amount of hours you have been working and the stress of it all. The way you spent Christmas was lonely as you looked down to the ground floor where your family gathered, a warm blanket slouched on your messy, unwashed hair. The distance between your pout and their smiles wasnât too far but because of your dying voice and their charged voice, even your mother could barely hear your Christmas greetings.
But, there was someone in your life who still barged into your highly contaminated room with his raccoon loverboy beanie and matching handmade raccoon scarf that you gifted for him this Christmas. Even with your refutes and arguments, he just shrugs, refusing to let you spend the holiday season time alone.Â
Every year has always been the same at this time of the year. From when the clock strikes midnight when the jingle bells ring from the city hall up to your room, up until around noon, you would spend it with your family. From noon, when you and your best friend would be amazed at how the snowman still kept its shape up until around dinner time, you would be all over the neighbourhood with him. Then cues the opening of gifts underneath the green tree with ornaments from your grandparentsâ age, the smile plasters on everyoneâs faces as choruses of âthank youâs would be said. Three hours before Christmas day passes, you would retreat to your room, only to have a visitor open your door, the pile of snow between the strands of his hair making the wood of your floor a tripping hazard.
Every year has always been the same for you both and Kim Sunwoo is determined to make sure that it would still be that way. The boy has always made every single Christmas memorable from the day you both were in diapers to now. He made sure that Christmas this year isnât wasted and he proves that solidly.
Now, another day of fighting begins as you pray for your fever to die down in time for the approaching new year. Contrary to your wishes, your whole body feels like itâs been shut down, feeling too effortful to even raise a finger despite it lying on your bed for the last twenty hours.
âSunwooâŠâ The tears well up in your eyes, wishing that you could at least pick up the phone to hear his stories about the day.Â
âI got you!âÂ
The door clicks open to reveal his toothy, mischievous smile. In one hand, a filled fabric bag is held as the other fist punches the sky eagerly. If you could, you wouldâve chucked all the layers of fabric to the ground for all you care, clinging onto the boy like a koala. He understands the thoughts roaming in your head as soon as he sees the way the ceiling light highlights the sweat on your forehead and the moisture around the bottom of your eyes.Â
The once-upturned corners of his mouth dipped and so did his shoulders. With his free hand, the door closed quietly. He slowly approaches you, kneeling on the floor beside your bed. Sunwoo takes his mittens off, tilting his head and his furrowed eyebrows match his solemn smile.Â
âThe new year is literally in three days and Iâm still here all wrapped up like a mummy.â He unfolded one of the new towels on your bedside table, dapping the sweat away from your flushed face. âI hate thisâŠâ
Sunwoo couldnât hide his true feelings either, missing having you healthy by his side for more than a whole week now. The night walks were now leaning more toward miserable than lonely. He misses the way you would wrap your nearest arm with his, the other hand loosely anchoring on as well as you both comment on whatever comes into your mind. Itâs during those times that you would be so preoccupied with your words that the world around him becomes silent, looking down at the slope of your nose and the shape of your moving lips dearly.Â
If you look up towards him, you can see the way that Sunwooâs eyes relax and the corners of his lips lift just slightly, looking at you with utmost adore and affection. His cheeks would be red, not because of the chilly wind, but because his heart is telling him to just hold you close, confess and kiss you deeply into the night.Â
Itâs no exaggeration to say that the fluttering feeling in his heart, gave his body more warmth than the mittens, beanie, scarf and winter outfit.
âItâll pass soon, donât worry,â Sunwoo reassures you, straightening his legs and heading to your bathroom. There, he shrieks and the laugh from the joined room, where you lay in bed with a new cold wet towel on your burning forehead tells him that you did it on purpose. âI thought that was real!â His head peaks out slightly from the bathroom door with the toy cockroach in his hand, throwing it on the duvet where it conveniently plops upside down.
âI need some laughs, okay?â It only earned an eye roll from Sunwoo, who closed the bathroom door.
Your eyes widen at the familiar actions, the sprinkling of water confirming your thoughts.
âSunwoo!â You scold him. âYou canât stay over! Iâm literally sick!â
âIâll be fine!â
These are the only words that he says, ignoring the rest of your complaints and nagging; he knows though, that itâs just because you care for his health and wellbeing.
Your lips could only form a big mountain when Sunwoo finally does exit your now sauna-like bathroom. He had his favourite raccoon onesie on, his used clothes in one hand and was supported with his chest to avoid it from toppling over his hold. A toothbrush is leisurely in his mouth, the frothing around the inside of his lips tells you that he has no second thoughts about staying over.Â
âYou canât, Woo.â An exasperated sigh comes out as soon as he slips into the room. âWhy donât you ever listen to what I say?â
The toothbrush stops its rustling sound against his healthy, white teeth and you can tell from the way his hands land on the side of his waist that he has a complaint back about you.
âAs if youâll ever listen to me.â And the rustling continues with a tune of a song.
âTouche.â
There is one thing that changed from your usual sleepovers but again, youâre not complaining as it is the best choice. Sunwoo takes out the spare roll-up mattress after excitedly knocking on your parentâs room for help. You could hear how your parents are beyond surprised by the visit but you could only smile when you hear the way they scold Sunwoo for wanting to stay beside you with your condition.
For some odd reason, he was still able to walk back into your room, showing off the white fabric on his shoulder that he held, shoulder way too high for your liking as his pride replaces the gloomy atmosphere in the room.
âMake some sort of distance between you and my bed please.â
Your tone is no longer playful, almost tired and most definitely worried. Sunwoo nods, his lips pulling into a line. At this moment, when Sunwoo sets up his bed for the night away from you, you donât realise the clench in your heart, your hand swishing over the space beside you where he would usually cuddle with you to sleep.
âThis alright?â Pulling off his sparkly doe eyes, shooting you a smile that you couldnât possibly refute. âAlright! Goodnight!â He cheers when you nod defeatedly.
With a flick of the switch, the only thing that allows you to see your covered feet is the moonlight from outside. Sunwoo is in a better position because the lower level means that your bed blocks the shine enough for him to slumber back to sleep.
For some reason, you couldnât. Your body is still, your eyelids shut and your calm breathing wouldâve fooled anyone that you were actually in dreamland. In reality, all you could hear was Sunwooâs more soothing snores, the sudden feeling that nothing was covering you and the uncomfortable feeling of staying awake.
Your eyelids shoot open once more, staring at the lines and scratches that managed to make it there. Maybe it was a chaotic cat? Or a really strong spiky fly? Or maybe, a ghost? Continuing a questionable amount of ideas. You didnât even realise when your body turned to the side where Sunwoo was. Without thinking much, your arm reaches for the expensive headpiece straight to the once-slumbering boy.
Disturbed between reality and dreams, his body immediately straightens up, turning his head at you. âHey!â
âSorry.â You did feel guilty, not knowing that your impulse actions would jolt him so much; but your laugh tells him that once again, you did plan it with some sort of naughty reason.
Like the antagonist of a scary movie, Sunwooâs head dips down slightly, his bangs covering his eyes and his cheek rising with menacing thoughts in his head. Suddenly, he jumps over to the mattress, wiggling his fingers all over your body.
âS-Stop! Sunwoo!â He didnât bother doing so, his heart delighted at the sound of your laughter after so long. âIâm sorry! Iâm sorry, you pathetic raccoon!â
âOh, youâre really asking for it!â
Itâs a miracle that none of your parents didnât woke up after almost five minutes of different volumes of laughter. After a week or so of copping up in your room, unable to properly see your best friend, he makes his mark on the winter holiday, knowing that every time you fall sick with a fever, youâll recall this fun memory.
âCanât sleep?âÂ
He retreats to the edge of the back, his legs dangling. Yet, he has his full focus on the way your smile gradually falls into a frown. His hands move under the blanket, finding yours. As soon as he feels you, his fingers intertwine with yours. Automatically, your thumb caresses Sunwooâs, calming enough for him to sleep. Eyelids heavy but not completely down yet, your brown orbs observe the way Sunwoo kneels beside you.
âSunwooâŠâ
âHm?âÂ
âThank you for staying.âÂ
His eyes widen slightly but he then lets out a small chuckle. âJust doing your lovely parents a favour.âÂ
âNo.â He gulps at your seriousness, watching the way that even though your back is facing the natural light source, the growing waters underneath your eyelids make his other hand reach out for you, the movement shaking your tears down. âI meant in life. Thank you for staying with me another year.â
Your eyelashes fluttered, the darkness quietly enveloping you. Sunwoo just lets out a soft sigh, your words making his heart beat too rapidly for him to sleep tonight.Â
âI love you.âÂ
ThereâŠ
He rehearsed the confession in the mirror many times, different scenarios each time, a different object in his hand every time as he imagined the perfect gift that he would give if he was ever given a chance to pour his feelings into you. A part of him wishes you heard it, hoping that you didnât keep this friendship going.Â
The mattress that he worked hard to retrieve from your parents is left untouched for the rest of the night. Forget about his well-being for a second, prioritising the love in his heart. Forget about being sick if it meant being able to hold you in his arms just like all those times. Forget about your scoldings that he would only stick his tongue out nonchalantly to. Sunwoo climbs on the opposite side, his usual spot in your bed. He carefully slips his body inside, the air a thousand times warmer, almost making him wince at the sudden temperature rise that he didnât expect.
For one last time in the night, he wipes your forehead clean, pressing a lingering kiss on the area. Your body recognises the dip of the bed, turning to the other side and hiding your eyes from the glare of the night into Sunwooâs beating chest. Perplexed but still somewhat composed, he lets you get comfortable first, both of your hands reaching up to the fabric of his collar, tugging it slightly as a satisfied smile makes its way onto your relaxed face.Â
âI love you.âÂ
He says once more.
âI love you so much, bubs.âÂ
A little bit louder.
âI love you so much but,â He rests his head on the pillow, pulling you further into his embrace with his hand curling over the shape of your head. âI donât think I can stay beside you next year.â
Unrequited love his whole life.Â
The trade-off between friendship and love is too much for him to fully digest.Â
But as the years pass, Sunwoo knows that there is nothing much he can do but drown in his uncertainties. At the same time, heâs no longer sure how much longer he could fake another smile towards you whenever you were taken out for dates. Heâs no longer sure how to keep his heartbeat at bay whenever you accidentally whip your hair across his face whenever he scared you, and the way your first instinct is to squish his cheeks, frown and check up for any hurt on his beautiful face. Heâs no longer sure if he could hide the urge to pull you into his chest whenever your fingers would lace together even during the hot summer days.
So Sunwoo made it clear to himself that tonight would be the last time he would bask in your presence. Another unsure kiss is given to your forehead and against the screamings inside his head, he follows his heart to press one on each of your closed lids, whispering loving words that he desperately wishes you would hear.Â
âIâm thankful for you too.â
True to his words, Sunwoo is gone by the early morning, the white blob on the floor is gone and so are the used towels that you have used throughout the previous day. Judging from the coolness of the sheets beside you, he mustâve left some time ago and it left a bitter feeling in your whole being when he left no note that would usually snap the drowsiness in you to an immediate deadpan reaction, or contrary a dog video that would make up want to curl up and stay in bed for longer.
Three distinct knocks on the door tell you that your mum has breakfast ready but you canât respond as enthusiastically as you usually would.Â
âYouâre looking better today, actually.â The plastic tray rests on the corner of your table. The now-occupied space reminds you of last night when Sunwoo used the same space for his worn-out backpack. Satisfied with the way your forehead is no longer burning and almost back to normal temperature, the woman nods and lets out a sigh of relief. âMust be the Sunwoo effect.â
It did make you forget your confusion for a second, the corners of your slumped lips pulling to a straight line. When you were once again left all alone in the room, the loneliness was unlike ever before. The charging cable is ripped away from your device, opening the messaging app to text Sunwoo a very formal, very awkward morning greeting. Your eyes bore into the bottom left of the screen, seeing if the familiar typing icon would pop out but after around four minutes of empty wishes, the way you shoved your phone under the pillow shows how crestfallen you are with his isolating behaviour. It continued for the rest of the day, your phone never buzzing because of him even though his social media activity shows him posting a new memory to share over the internet.
New Year is around a few hours and to you, it looks like Sunwoo has no plans to change his indifference towards you. Even when Eric says he would make sure that Sunwoo sends a message to you, the only thing that changed in your messaging status with him is the âdeliveredâ to âseenâ sign.
âThe audacity of this little piece of shââÂ
Your fingers tapped rapidly first, and the floating tiles of your keyboard pour your conflicted emotions with a dash of empty threats to him. Itâs infuriating that the only thing he did was still, left you on âseenâ but this time, in real-time.Â
âOkay, fine!â
Why are you so defeated? Frustrated? Annoyed? Irritated? Worried? Sour? Confused? Are you really going to spend the rest of the year without him? Start the new one without him? Is he really breaking the streak of watching the fireworks together and being each otherâs first âHappy New Year!âs with a bunch of jumping and squealing?Â
Is he mad because youâre the reason why you canât watch the flowers in the sky with him this year? But Sunwoo knows that youâve been sick! But if he is, is he so mad to the point that youâre going to break the streak of being each otherâs first âHappy New Year!âs next year because of it? But between you both, youâve always beaten him by a split second!
âFine! Be that way then!â If the framed picture of you both had noise sensitivity, youâre sure that it wouldâve cowered away and fallen straight to the bin next to it. âIgnore me then! Go have fun with the rest of your friends! Whyâd you come here and act like you cared when you were just going to avoid me like this?!â
As if the whole universe isnât seemingly against you already, the bunny doll that Sunwoo won for you smiled sweetly from the corner of your room. The rubber material of your slippers makes high-pitched slaps and your arms snatch the poor plush by its neck, shaking it back and forth as you start to let out all the cursing in all the languages that you know to the boy in your head.
âYou got it!â
You couldnât hide the excitement on your face as soon as the claw hovers in the hole of the machine, a few seconds away from delivering the prize to your hands. Sunwoo rejoices and is proud after winning against the rigged game with only the first try.Â
You try to wait patiently for Sunwoo to give it to you, but the way that your upper body bounces, and the way your slightly wavy hair goes along with the motions of your body, only makes it harder for Sunwoo to properly hand you over the gift. You werenât doing anything special but he was so in love with you that he couldnât help but let out a shaky breath at the way your eyes sparkle to himâit didnât help his case that you were cutely drowning in his jacket.Â
âD-Do you love it that much?â
Would it be weird if he snapped a photo of you right now? When your cheeks are smushed against the bunnyâs fluffy ones? Would it be weird if he wanted to set it as his wallpaper and just stare at it all day long?
âItâs so cute!âÂ
You indirectly answered, putting your full attention and affection to the animal in your hands. The way you bopped your nose with its own only fuels his adoration for you and because youâre so immersed in your birthday gift, Sunwoo did manage to get the picture that he desires.
Kim Sunwoo also had it as his lock screen, hiding it within a collage of other memoriesâitâs the reason why heâs been so protective over his phone for the last few months.
Having had enough of giving the inanimate animal a headache, you threw it onto the floor with a huff, blowing the loose strand of hair away from your vision. All of a sudden, the tears finally well up in your eyes and you let out silent croaked sobs. The hunched-over plushie is the catalyst for your head to replay the memories in your head. With your back against your bed, knees folded to your chest and the bunny sitting on top, the outside world blurs out of existence for a while.
Everything is just Kim Sunwoo.
From the way he smiles.
To the way he drools in his sleep.
From the way he would literally hide you from the outside world, arms enveloping and muffling your cries.
To the way he welcomes the series of punches on his chest because life is too much for you sometimes.
From the way he has your mum on speed dial in case he canât reach you.
To the way that he would hop into the car to pick you up from your solo late-night, early-morning beach walks still in his pyjamas.
From the way he knew how to comfort you depending on the situation.
To the way he wouldnât mind submitting his assignment late if it meant that youâll be able to sleep peacefully.
Your face flares up, recalling the light pressure of his lips on your eyelids the other night and with it, the meaning behind your tight hold on the bunny becomes something entirely different. Thatâs all it takes for you to rush out the front door, your mum following your rushed actions with her eyes.
âWell,â she shrugs, eyes back to the television of her favourite Christmas movie, âthat happened.â
So maybe you shouldâve changed to snowing boots or something more appropriate than your slippers but in your bodyâs adrenaline to keep your body intact for another five minutes when you would reach Sunwooâs house.
âYouâre soâugh!âÂ
The crystals falling from the sky are too uncomfortable and you know that you will be bedridden for longer after this but thatâs not going to be your fault. Someone else will take the blame for this and youâll make it clear for him.
Itâs only when you reach the front door, hands on your bent knees, throat dry, nose red, cheeks most probably iced due to your tears and the weather that the words all evaporate from your head. Nothing seemed to make sense anymore and with the curtain from the living room open just enough for you to see Sunwoo snuggling in the couch with his cup of hot chocolate, the feelings that you have been hiding from him amplified greatly.
Youâre so mad at him but you still think he looks cute with the blanket over his head, covering his shoulders and eyes focused so much to the point the colours of the graphics were being reflected on his eyes. Changing the direction from kicking down the front door, you decided to instead gather a lump of ice into your palm, striking it against the window where his face was.Â
His body jolts back but it didnât take long for his mind to register the white remnants crumbling on the glass, window frame and sill. It takes Sunwoo less than a second to take in your shivering figure on the other side of the window and he knows heâs going to get an earful from his mum when she sees the sweet and sticky drink on her carpet.
The coat hanger rattles and almost breaks an arm with how violently Sunwoo takes two of his warmest jackets, swiftly getting ready to meet the cold and starting blizzard outside. He automatically winced when nature slammed the door open, almost stubbing his toeâbut maybe thatâs his karma for leaving you on read for more than a whole day without a proper explanation.
Sunwoo took his focus away from the throbbing pain, skipping down the stairs, using the spiky handrail for support as he pushed his body up whenever he went down a step lower, relaxing when his feet landed on the ground safely. Itâs only been a few minutes since he stepped out of his blanket but now everything is throbbingâhis heart as well for a different reason.
Seeing you still facing the window, your hair flying all over the place, your chin basically on your chest, Sunwoo realises that he hurt you badly. Maybe he shouldâve just been honest. If so, then at the very least, you wouldnât chase him out like this when it looks like you just started to feel better.Â
âHeyâŠâ his feet make cautious little shuffles, scrunching the remaining mixes of nature and ice, kind of scared for his life that you would start to (rightfully) punch him. Thankfully, he got close enough to drape his jacket onto your shoulder, zipping up the front without asking you to put your arms. If it wasnât for the fact that he ignored you, he would be teasing and asking you about what you are mulling over. âLetâs go inside, hm?â
Sunwoo sighs at your stubbornness when you shoved his arm away, feet planted on the ground.
âGo away.âÂ
His heart clenches at the way you probably meant that. It included a hint of hurt, broken the unanswered questions that were swarming your head.
âIâm sorry,â Sunwoo said so softly that you couldâve missed it if it wasnât the way you were already actively focusing on him. âSo please, letâs just get you inside. Itâs my fault, Iâm sorry.â
His palm goes over where his heart is and the other hand gives you a reassuring press. Sunwoo knew by the way you refused to look at him despite him bending over to meet your eyes, that this was going to be tough for you to listen to him.
But Kim Sunwoo is patient.
Heâs always been patient and understanding when it comes to you. When his hands reach over to envelop yours, you donât push away how he wraps his own between yours. Your heartbeat picks up its pace when he leads your joined hands into the pocket of his jacket, his thumb gliding over your skin. The act also sends your body closer to his, finally closing the gap between your bodies, sharing body warmth corresponding to the red hues on your cheeks.
Your lips now hover over his outwear and your nose takes his scent in, enjoying breathing in the familiarity after almost two days of no contact. Sunwoo bites his lips, nervous about having you in front of him and the way you tighten your hold on his hands tells him that you have a lot to say.Â
âYou donât want to spend the first week of the new year bedridden, bubs.â Wordlessly and timidly, Sunwoo just scans over your facial features, his eyes roaming about while your eyes are stuck on his zipper which is halfway done.
âDonât call me thatâŠâ Because it clicks open the surge of feelings that you have been trying to hide from him for the longest time. âDonâtâŠâ
You were still half awake when he said his words.
Unknowingly to Sunwoo, you heard every single word that you have always wanted to say to him. That night, when his hand wrapped securely around your waist, you had the best sleep in your life, taking a mental note to talk about the topic later on.
Only to realise that you are both idiots with your feelings.
âIâm sorââ
âStop apologising!âÂ
And it sends Sunwoo into a puddle of shock and confusion when your eyes send out a waterfall. He separates his hands from yours and they fly quickly to hold your cheeks. Stutters of more apologies string out and his thumbs werenât fast enough to keep your face dry.Â
âIâm sorry! Iâm sorry too!â
âHey, what are you sorry about? Iâm the one who left you on read!â
âIâm sorry that Iâve never told you how much I appreciate you,â you hiccup before continuing, seeing a glimpse of Sunwooâs gaping mouth, âIâm sorry that youâve always been the one taking care of me and not the other way around,â and you see the way he shakes his head with furrowed eyebrows, âIâm sorry that I ever make you think that I donât care about you!âÂ
âHey, no. Donât say that, I know you care aboââ
âI love you, Kim Sunwoo!âÂ
To him, even though Christmas has passed, heâs convinced that itâs a miracle for him. The night when he left to stay in your house, he innocently wished upon the shooting star, closing his eyes and hoping for your health and happinessâbut he couldnât help but also wish that you would love him back even though thatâs out of his control.
But what can he do when heâs only loved one person and one person throughout his whole life?
âIâm sorry if I ever made you think that I like someone else because I can tell you now that all those dates I went to only made me sure that Iâm so in love with you and you make me feel like I can just be myself when Iâm around you and I also feel jittery when Iâm around you andââ
This is not the type of confession that he has rehearsed for.
He guides your face into his chest, still sobbing and crying. As always, your hands weakly hit him, your lips still voicing out muffled confessions to him. Sunwooâs arms wrap around your shoulders, the other on top of it. His head dips, his lips breathing out air near your ear, resting his forehead on his arm for stability. He wants to say something, anything to make sure that his avoidance doesnât mean that he doesnât love you back but all he wants to do is to just hold you closer to make it clear that no one could take you out on another date.
Only he can take you out on dates now.
You sniffle, catching your breath after letting your feelings out. The hold around you makes you melt, smiling before turning to where Sunwoo is. At your longing stare, his head shoots back up in surprise, tripping over his own words at how you look at him with beady, watery eyes in adoration. Shy Sunwoo is going to be a sight that youâll get used to quickly, noting how adorable he is with how his eyes refuse to meet yours and his lips moving without any sound actually coming through.
âI love you.âÂ
You repeated quieter just for him so that he was the only one who could hear the words.
âI love you so much.â
You stood on your toes, planting a kiss on his chin.
âI love you so much but,â Sunwoo gulps with how you squinted your eyes, âif you leave my side next year, I wonât hesitate to throw a snowball to your face.â
âOh God, please donât do that.â Mortified and shaking his head, âIâm sorry, you win. Iâll do anything, just please have mercy on me.â
âAnything?â
Sunwoo gives a series of firm, convincing nods.
âKiss me.â
The words took a while to register in his mind and he couldnât help the breath hitching when he realised your request. Sunwoo almost stumbled backwards, your hands tug the fabric of his pockets, pulling him back to you and reality. It caused your foreheads to lightly bump and the impact made you wince at his stupidity.Â
âI-Iâm sorry! I-Iâmââ
âKim Sunwoo! Thereâs going to be a mark there! That hurââ
A pair of comforting hands hold your jawline, tilting your face to accommodate the height difference between the two once-best friends. When Sunwoo gets a better grip on himself, he quickly dives in when your lips part, swallowing your complaints and making his dreams come true.Â
Double a decadeâno, more than that.Â
Thatâs how much heâs waited for this moment with you.
When his lips would slot against yours, hugging your top ones with his before pulling away to give the same amount of affection to your bottom ones. Your noses bump into each other slightly, making the moment seem real and fun, smiling and giggling when you both part for air. Shy and kind of embarrassed with how messy and uncoordinated it is but you both know you wouldnât want to share each otherâs firsts with anyone else.Â
At this moment, itâs you and him in this world.
Thatâs how you ended the year. Clenched fist still inside his pockets, though that didnât stop you from folding the fabric back so that you could have your arms wrapped around his middle to pull him closer. The sky soon blooms shortly after, and the happy firing noises illuminate the night sky, beating the dull light and colour of the moon that everyone sees every day. Because of the dynamic colours, Sunwoo is able to see the shades of the celebration mirrored on your skin, finding you more beautiful than ever before.Â
Though beautiful, the fireworks did make Sunwoo roll his eyes when he seemingly needed to repeat variations of âBe my girlfriend!â even though you were less than ten centimetres away from his face. He knows after your third âWhat? I canât hear youâ that you were playing with him, giving you pecks of his lips across your face playfully, enjoying how your laughs neutralised the flowers in the sky.Â
You ended the year with the start of a kiss with your best friend.
And start the new year with a new title for your ex-best friend.
With Kim Sunwoo, of course.

(i suffered so much with the banner, i need to stop looking at it now)

Summer holds a very soft, warm spot in your heart.
For one, itâs the way the season is conveniently placed in the middle of July to the end of August which is the best time to destress after almost half a year of studying your ass off.
Secondly, itâs the way that you would shout âcannonball!â whilst you and your friends linked hands and jumped into the backyard, outdoor swimming pool.
Thirdly, itâs the way that you can flexibly work your schedule for a short amount of time: waking up, sleeping whenever you want to, studying when you want to and hanging out with the same friends when you want to.
Fourthly, itâs the way that every single food tastes so much better in the sunny summer compared to other white winters, the sneezy spring and the awkward cold-but-not-too-cold autumn.
But itâs also the way that you met your boyfriend in this beautiful season two years ago when he transferred to your school, alongside the fact that he shyly (but confidently, at the same time) asked you to be his a year ago at your favourite beach. You remember the way his cheeks flush with surprise when he turns back upon Younghoon and Jacobâs mischievous giggles, telling him to turn back to see you stare at him in bewilderment. The truth was revealed later on that your friends plotted the confession, complaining about your blindness of the lovesick eyes that you both sent to each other yet doing nothing about it.
To celebrate your last high school summer break together, Jaehyunâs closest two friends, Younghoon and Jacob, would come together with your slightly bigger group to spend a little four-day, three-night getaway at Jeju Island.
All of you have been talking about this for ages and how it would be a fun treat for making it through the last decade of compulsory high school and to give an encouraging pump for the last half a year left before you all finally become adults and take your own pathways. You all saved money like crazy even when you all reached the budget that is needed (you never know what could happen!) and the exciting day finally starts off tomorrow with Jacob driving one car while Seoyoon drives the smaller 4-wheel drive. Itâs a shame that they couldnât find a single car for all six of them at a reasonable price but they are all thankful for the opportunity to even share these memories together.Â
âAre you all ready for tomorrow?â Your mum peaks in after she knocks on your bedroom door. She was just as excited as you are, seeing how much you worked so hard both at school and your efforts on saving money for the last three years, âGive this to Jaehyun for me as well.â
âHm?â You took your eyes off your still messy luggage to see, what you assumed to be, a black leather jacket that was folded neatly with a red ribbon wrapped around it; donât forget the simple small card with his name on it, slipped in the middle of the ribbon.Â
âItâs his birthday gift. It was his birthday recently, right?â Your mumâs considerate act made you smile brightly and you jumped up from your knees to give her a tight hug. With your arms around her neck and your neck on her shoulders, you squeal in happiness, âOkay, okay I get it, you love him very much.â
You jump, still in your mumâs arms with your head in the clouds as you picture your loving boyfriend that you will be able to spend time with nonstop for the next four days or so, âI really really do. Heâs just so perfect, mum.â
âYes, yes. Iâve heard this way too much. Now let go of me, child. You need to finish packing.â Your mum rolls her eyes playfully and you know there was a big smile plastered on her own face with the way her words were delivered so clearly.
âOkay, okay.â With a quick kiss on her cheek, your mum disappears to the other side of the door. You let out a sigh of happiness, putting Jaehyunâs gift next to your luggage as you imagined how cute, good, hot, handsom---
âAlso,â You jump a bit, hands on your chest when your mum surprised you this time with no further notice of her presence, âstop stealing his clothes.â You just giggle guiltily as her uninteresting eyes direct themselves to your overfilled, messy closet, âOne, you already have a lot. Two,â back to your giddy figure, âheâs going to go broke.â

The whole house was sleeping, recharging from their own personal tiring events from the day. You should probably be too as youâve all planned quite an early morning to get the most out of your holiday together. Instead though, somewhere in the middle of your packing, you couldnât help but call your boyfriend, âCan youâŠâÂ
âHm?â Jaehyun on the other side of the line was also about to call you earlier and his face lit up when your name popped up on his screen, the familiar and specific ringtone bouncing around his four walls excitedly, âWhatâs wrong?â
The both of them curled up in their own respective beds with hushed voices full of love and adoration. Their phones were near their own faces as they lay down on their side to face each otherâs respective profile pictures on their phones. At first, they wanted to do a video call but Jaehyun adamantly refused as per experience, they would not be able to sleep until about an hour before they were supposed to wake up. As much as you both know that you (probably) shouldnât be doing that during school times, sitting next to each other during recess and lunch, with your head resting on his shoulder and his on top of yours as you both tried desperately to recharge quickly for the next periods, you both concluded that those late night (early morning) talks have always been worth it.
âCan we justâŠnot sleep tonight?â You offered, your cheeks red as you pulled your blanket further up your face to hide as if Jaehyun could see you over his phone, âAnd just talk?â
âYou know we shouldnât, bubs.â Jaehyun hums, whispering back to you softly, âPlus we will literally be together for four days.â
âWell,â You grumble, sighing out as you finally voice the rough mathematical sound in your head, âtechnically less because we wonât be in the same room and then after that, there will be toilet breaks and then we lose milliseconds when we blink our eyes and then we wonât be in the same car as well, which is a big deal and itâs ju---â
âOkay okay, so maybe itâs not for a full ninety-six hours.â Jaehyunâs amused chuckle made you softly smile again, closing your eyes to focus on his comforting voice, âBut we should get to sleep now, hm? Letâs just keep the phone on, okay?â
âAh! I forgot to tell you abou---â
âBubs.â Jaehyun scolds you playfully. You could make out the grin on his face and the way his eyes form little crescent shapes as you just whine about not wanting to fall asleep yet, âTell you what.â
âHm?â
You make out the shuffles from the other side of the line, telling you that Jaehyun is getting into a more comfortable position. This made you kick your legs and squeal into the phone as you knew what he would say next. Jaehyun shakes his head at your obviously delighted response. He sits up on the bed, laying his back on the bed frame. With his phone on his lap, he continued to make his little âdealâ, âIâll sing and you sleep.â
âFine.â You rolled your eyes but the tone of your voice gave away what you truly felt, âNight, Jae.â
âGoodnight, bubs.â

You woke up refreshed, the tune that Jaehyun sang to you last night replaying in your head. You forgot to charge your phone last night so when you said âgood morningâ and didnât receive a response back, you were worried that something happened to the other line. Quickly jumping out of bed to reach for your power bank and starting your phone up with a series of impatient âcome on, come onâ, you thought you could beat your boyfriendâs text first.
With a bear and a heart next to his name, your notification showed the âgood morning, sleepyhead.â and the âbeat you to it first, bubs.â
You slap your forehead gently to scold yourself. Forgetting to charge your phone overnight during an overnight phone call isnât new to you and you made a bet with Jaehyun that the next time it happens (which is, just then), you would be the first one to send him a âgood morningâ text, beating his unbeatable strike of twenty-three.
âWell, thatâs twenty-four now.â The heartwarming feeling spreads through your body again and the smallest things that Jaehyun did made you feel so loved that you felt that you were out of this world.
You plop back down on your bed, stretching your arms out to the ceiling with your phones in your hands as you watch the âringingâ switch to a stopwatch to show the duration of the call, âYou beat me.â Jaehyun chuckles through the speaker mode.
âGood morning to you too.â You see the request to turn the voice call into a video call and you pick it up immediately, âAh, my girlfriend is so pretty in the morning.â
âLee Jaehyun, stop.â You pull your hair over to hide your face, peeking through the gaps to see him blow a kiss at you. You blew one back, your cheeks still flaring red and warm, âIf I look pretty then youâre a masterpiece.â
âAs if.â With the new angle of the phone facing towards the ceiling, you observed the way that your boyfriend enters a new room, turning on the lights to start his morning routine. Jaehyun puts his phone against his bathroom mirror but due to his height and the lower table, you can no longer see his face. But you didnât need to see his face to know what he was going to do.Â
Your regular morning and night phone calls served as a kind of âget ready forâ something together and it also allowed you both to become more comfortable with each other during your first stages of dating. When you were just friends, these calls werenât regular and only happened when you both needed to get something off your chests, or maybe rant about a nightmare that you had and needed some comfort. When you both started dating, it naturally became a regular thing you both indulged in, spending hours studying or watching movies together at night and spending your morning hours together before you hung up when you both were back to each other physically.
So you knew very well what Jaehyun was going to do when he let out a loud exhale and plugged his hair straighter into the power plug on the wall where the phone was near, âStraightening your hair?â You didnât ask this question often. Most of the time you asked is either because you both werenât currently talking or were too busy in your morning routines.
âYeah.â He lets out a loud exhale and you observe how his chest leans forward toward the mirror, presumably to take a better look at a part of his hair that is already straightened, "JustâŠ" another sigh, "yeah."
You nod at his words. Turning over to lay on your stomach to be in a more comfortable position, you just watch Jaehyun's arms moving left to right, up and down as he readjusts his hair with the help of his mirror. The series of 'tsk' from the other side of the line made your heart clench and you couldn't help but reassure him, your chin resting on your arm, "I love your curly hair, Jae."
You know how much Jaehyun gets insecure about his natural hair sometimes. The very first time you saw it was when you arrived at Jaehyun's house really early when you both were only friends. He opened the door for you to wait inside but due to his nervousness about unexpectedly having you over and walking to school with you for the first time, he forgot to finish his morning routine.
You remember greeting him with a shy smile and 'good morning' and he didn't even get the chance to say it back because your eyes travelled up to the very different hairstyle he has compared to the one you see at school. No need to say, he shut the door on you and the whoosh of wind left you stunned at the front door for a while.
When he opened the door again, you sweetly smiled at him, complimenting the natural shape of his hair. His worries about you seeing him as different (and possibly in your eyes, ugly) all disappear when you offer to straighten his hair for him.
Lee Jaehyun was a tomato throughout it all, especially when you said you like boys with curly hair. Like, what was he even supposed to do with that information?
"R-Really?" You lift your chin, coming closer to the phone screen when Jaehyun's face comes into view, "I-I justâŠI look so ba---"
"You look gorgeous." You quickly interrupted and you relaxed when Jaehyun let out a genuine sigh of relief. You took note of how his smile grew and his eyes looked at you thankfully, "I promise."
He retrieves his phone back to his hand and places his now gleaming face in the middle of the screen, "Thank you." He blew a kiss to the screen and you returned the gesture back before finally starting your own morning routine before Seoyoon arrived.
It's only around thirty minutes later when Seoyoon texted her arrival and you scurried down the stairs with all your necessities chaotically, "I think I'll hang up now. Lyla will not let me live otherwise."
"Yep, even though she's the biggest contributor to our relationship." Jaehyun remarks, "See you soon, bubs."
"Love you, see you soon!"
You turned off your phone, pocketed it safely and dropped your luggage in the trunk of the car. Hopping in with an excited feeling, you were quickly attacked with your own words that you said a couple of minutes ago.
"Love you, see you soon!!" Lyla imitates you, a series of eyebrow wiggles and teasing smiles on her face when she turns her body over to face the back seat where you just groan and roll your eyes.
"Hey. You and Jacob aren't any better." Seoyeon defends you swiftly and you poke your tongue out at your now-defeated friend.
"They're so cute, it physically makes me sick." Your backseat partner, Sua comments.
You squint your eyes at her, "I'm not sure whether that's a compliment or not but I'll just accept it and move on." Seoyeon watches her best friend from the rearview mirror, nodding and clicking her tongue in approval while humming in thought, "What?"
"You and Jaehyun are perfect for each other indeed." Seoyoon starts the engine again, turning up the music to a desirable amount for the hour-long trip to the resort.
You blush at that, murmuring to yourself, "He's perfect for sure."Â

The holiday just started and itâs already so much better than you expected. While waiting for your gate to open, you pass Jaehyunâs gift from your mum, your boyfriend putting it on straight away despite the warm weather and sending a video message to your mum in gratitude. Lyla also planned a 'little' daily schedule for you all to follow the past few days. The later bloomers were not particularly happy with starting the day at nine and ending it at eleven on the same day and through choruses of opinions, she scrapped the idea and reduced the amount of group activities. You reassured your best friend that you would still do the main things that she wanted to do together and you were satisfied with the way she tackled you down on the bed in happiness.Â
Other than that, you all did an awesome job at finding this beach house. The location of the beach house is convenient and with the time of the year, a lot of night markets and activities were planned each day to celebrate the warm season. The area is filled with other couples and not so surprisingly other students who are enjoying their short freedom before they have to bury their whole bodies underneath a pile of books and practice exam papers.Â
âWeâre finally here!â You all walked out and breathed the minty fresh air and salty sea as you stepped out of the airport, âThis is so exciting!â Sua pulls both you and Seoyoon by the waist, squishing you three into a tight hug, âWeâre going to have so much fun.â
You chuckle and affirm her words, âBut letâs get the car first.â
Jacob points to the familiar plate numbers and along with Seoyoon, figures out the final arrangements, all the terms and conditions before finally attaining the keys from the person in charge.
âCan I---â
âNo. You already spent like an hour with him on the flight.âÂ
Sua gives you a deadpan look and Lyla pushes the girl lightly, âJust let her go. Jaehyun is looking at us with puppy eyes as well. Go with Jacob though, donât want to see you two being all lovey-dovey.â
âEw.â Sua throws her head back and jumps out of the hug, âYou know what you both go in Jacobâs car. Iâm going to go with Younghoon and Seoyoon.â
You took Lylaâs hand with your chin held high, teasing Suaâs look of grimace, âNot a problem with me.â As you were about to grab the handle of your wheel bag in another, Jaehyun ran to your side and beat you to it, giving you a quick kiss on your cheek.
His smirk grew at the way your cheeks grew red at the lingering feeling of his lips, âYou werenât giving me any attention.â Lyla squeals and runs away from you to hug her own boyfriend instead. Still frozen and shy at the unexpected act, you turned your head to the side with raised eyebrows, a gaped mouth and being absolutely speechless, Jaehyun shrugged innocently, âI was getting kind of lonely, bubs.âÂ
âLee Jaeh---â
Another kiss this time was given straight to your lips, muffling your complaints.
âWha---â
Your internal body temperature is rising to be as hot as the summer heat and Jaehyun knew that he needed to cool you down or else you were probably going to murder him for making you so flustered in the middle of the walkway entrance of the airport door. He dips his head down once more to ghost over your plumper lips and before you can say anything else, his palms land softly on both sides of your waist, encasing you in his hold. His thumbs soothe down the sides of your body particularly along your ribs as you gasp from the delicate touch before he dives in to kiss you once more. Your own arms lift and you cross your wrists over on his nape, pulling him closer and responding to the kiss.
You felt nervous as you were out in public, tens of people just walking by or just standing around, but it all dissipated when you felt his breath on your lips. The kiss itself wasnât heated like some of your other kisses with him but rather sweet and gentle. His lips would hug your lower lips before pulling away a little bit and hug your upper lip instead, relishing the way you would respond to him as a smile grew on both of your faces. He would do those little nudges and brushes with his nose on yours and you giggled as it meant that his playful self appeared to replace his flirty self.
âA bit jealous?â You asked him with your foreheads against each other.
âNo.â Jaehyun smiles so widely when you both make eye contact, so much so that his cute little eye wrinkle smile makes its appearance, âA lot.â
That's how Jaehyun showed his love to you throughout the trip. It would also be holding hands whenever you both could, filling up your plate with more food whenever it got empty, making you walk on the inside of the walkway, dropping you off at your room door as if it wasn't just across and a little bit of a turn to his own room with the other boys, reminding you that you're beautiful and that he loves you every day.
Just.
You love this man. So much. With all your heart.
And Jaehyun knows that. From the way you would use your palm to block the side of his face due to the wind, to how you would give him the first bite of your ice cream, reminding him to put more sunscreen and applying it to his face every so often, to the way you sweetly kissed him on the lips as you both rested for the night.
He loves you. So much. With all his heart.
He managed to prove to you that every single day for the past two years you were friends, the past year and a half when he developed a crush on you, and the last year ever since you confessed your feelings to him back after him.
But you see, it's just unavoidable that you would still have those times alone when you would look at your body and feel self-conscious about it. You're human after all. It's normal to have a drop in confidence sometimes but the stereotype of girls in summer with their tanned skin, humongous sunglasses and revealing bikini got to you sometimes.
Your boyfriend is a godsend. It's no secret that girls would crush on him and the boys want to be him. I mean, with that kind heart, sexy brain (and body) and handsome visuals? Seriously, what did you do in your past life to receive this much love from a single person?
"You're not changing?"
Snapping out of your daze from your messy luggage, you could see your three friends all in their own choice of swimsuits and bikinis under their beach towels and robes. Seoyoon stares at you worriedly through her pink sunglasses.
"Um." You try your best to show a genuine smile, "I'll be there, just trying to swallow down that heavy lunch. You guys go on ahead."
You would be stupid if you thought they would believe that. Six years of friendship with a punt lie like that? Absolutely not. But they didn't question you further as you just bit your lower lip, feeling your confidence drop down once more. They know you just wanted to be alone after telling them that you felt sick and that you ate so much after lunch.
This is the part of summer that you hate.
As much as summer does hold a soft spot in your heart, sometimes the reminder that the sun is made out of fire literally made your head hot due to the overthinking that you always did somewhere along the way before you stepped into any type of swimsuit.Â
Deciding to succumb to your thoughts for a little bit, you sit down on the edge of the bed in defeat. You look out to see the sun's circumference not too far away from kissing the edge of the ocean and you could feel yourself starting to cry as you tried to push your dark thoughts away.
"Come on." You pleaded with yourself to pick up a swimsuit, any swimsuit, so that you can go meet with the others and watch the sunset together by the beach before you would all need to pack up and go back to reality tomorrow, "PleaseâŠ" You whimper in desperation.
The balls of your feet step onto the side rail of the bed and you begin to sob, your arms wrapping your abdomen tightly in frustration. The water runs straight down from your eyelashes to your thighs and those droplets eventually make their own path from there as well.
You want to see the sunset as the beach water splashes and hugs your lower body. You want to see the sunset with your friends and your boyfriend together as you maybe do a little water fight against each other. You want to see the sky turn its bright colours to darker hues that signal younger children to turn their devices off and go to sleep.Â
You want to do all that so badly.
You released all your pent-up feelings through your tears and the cawing seagulls constantly reminded you that you were running out of time as the circle in the sky would eventually just sink and it would not stop or wait for anyone or anything. You managed to be in a swimsuit on the other previous days. So why now? When this whole little "let's see the sunset together in the water" was your idea. Why? Why why why---
You shouldn't have eaten so much in the last few days, feeling the difference in your stomach but also outside through your own eyes. So still with these burning thoughts and blurry vision, you just close your eyes, shove your hands into your suitcase, and take the first cold elastane fabric in your palms and change into it. Throughout your trip, you would plan your outfits with the help of the full body mirror that was placed behind the door, taking selfies with your friends as you all pulled funny faces together.Â
This is the only outfit that the mirror didn't see and the camera did not have save, and you didnât think anything or anyone could change that. Quickly, you grab an oversized shirt, pulling it over your body to quickly realise that it's one of Jaehyunâs that you stole. You chuckle between your ragged gasps for air, sitting down on the bed again to continue your cries for a bit more. Before you can even hug your body once more, the knock on the door makes you whip your head backwards towards it.
"Bubs? Are you okay?"
You whimper at the familiar voice behind the door and you shake your head, not trusting your ability to answer verbally. Of course, the door isn't transparent and Jaehyun himself is only human too and understandably, your lack of response only makes him worry more.
"HeyâŠI'm going in alright?" The door clicks open with that and you hurriedly wipe any last bit of tears on your face, running your wet palms along the clothing that covers half of your thighs. You still couldnât help your sniffles though and it was enough to have the smile on Jaehyunâs face and his soft steps to change quickly, âHey, hey. Whatâs wrong?â
You only shook your head in response, your fists clenched the shirt in frustration as you began to drown in your own thoughts as well. Jaehyun kneels down in front of your downcasted head and if you looked up, you would be able to see the sad smile, the way his eyes gaze at you with patience and love. Carefully, his hand reaches out to your now-white fists. His fingers lay on the back of your palm while his palm lays on your knuckles, his thumb soothing the exposed sides of your pointer finger.
He made his presence to you with small, gentle steps from there: tucking your hair behind your ears, making a joke about how he thought he lost the shirt you were wearing, and letting out a harmonious chuckle when you responded to his joke. With time, he even manages to let your hands go off his now crinkled shirt, holding both your hands instead.
"I'm sorry." Is the first word you said when you broke the silence.Â
Pouting at that, Jaehyun leans forward to kiss your tired knuckles, "Don't be. You haven't done anything wrong."
"I haveâŠ" You whisper guiltily, "We missed the sunset right?"
"Hey, don't you think about that right now, okay?" He shakes his head at your worries, "That's not important. What's important is why you were crying alone and feeling sad about something."
"I'm just---" You sigh exasperatedly. Your eyes haven't met Jaehyun, just taking in the way your hands were between his. The changes in your physical appearance made you so weak and frustrated, "I just don't feel good about my body and you're literally so perfect and I just can't keep up with how perfect you ar---"
"Stop, don't say that about yourself." He lets go of your hands, scooting over and straightening his back. You close your eyes, sniffling once again as you feel your boyfriend's hands cup your cheek, lifting your messy face to him. He wipes the rest of the tears that escape from your eyes with his thumbs, leaning to press kisses on both your eyelids in an attempt to ground you back.Â
You open your eyes to see the love hearts that swirl around his eyes freely, the crease between his eyebrows and the somewhat serious face he has on.Â
"He's mad at meâŠ" and you bit your lip to contain your assumptions to yourself, scared that Jaehyun would affirm it and want that could result, "Please don't leave me."
"I wo---"
"I'll make myself look better in every way possible, just please give me time."
"Bubs, what are you talking about?" Jaehyun shakes his head at your rant while his head tries to pick up the pieces together to make a sort of confusion, "You're perfect as you are. Don't ever change yourself for anyone. Including me."
"But those girls are so pretty, Jaehyun and you would look so much better with them. Or maybe with me if I was somewhere on their lev---"
"Please look at yourself the way that I see you through my eyes." It was soft, almost like a hush. But you catch the way his lips move when you go on a tangent and you stop yourself from going further.
Jaehyun stands up, making you stand up as well and brings you in for a hug, his hand behind your head and the other around your waist. You let out the rest of your tears on his chest, punching him lightly while your palm pushes your stomach in frustration.
Jaehyun doesn't care about your punches to his chest but he immediately catches your other hand, pulling it away to the side of your body. His hand wraps itself around your wrist tightly, stopping you from pulling it back, "You're gorgeous." His hold on your body tightens as he recites the words that you said to him a few days ago through the latest video chat you both had, "I promise."
"JaehyunâŠ"
"I don't care about other girls. Who cares about them? When I have such a gorgeous girlfriend inside and out and bonus for me, loves me for who I am?" Jaehyun puts a small distance between his chest and your face, gazing down at you and planting a kiss on your forehead, "Wait here for a bit?"
You nod at the question and he leaves to go to the bathroom. While he left, your eyes went back to the view outside the window and you could predict how much time had passed as the circumference of the sun started to really make contact with the ocean. The guilt settles in again and you curse yourself for ruining the last group event of the whole trip.Â
But before you could really drown in the darkness again, Jaehyun stumbles out of the bathroom and you gasp at his wet hair and the darker spots on his shirt due to the water. You walk over to him, your mouth moving in different shapes though no voice was heard.
Jaehyun chuckles at the way you retrieved a towel and laid it on top of his head, beginning to dry his brown hair with circular motions, "Thank you." He takes the towel with one hand, continuing the motions himself while his other arm snakes around your waist to pull you back to his chest.
You rest your chin on his left pectoral, observing the little curls of his hair starting to make its appearance and you smile fondly at how it would disappear underneath the towel and reappear again. When Jaehyun puts the towel around his neck, you couldn't help but reach out to play with one of his curls, trapping the strands between your thumb and pointer and gently tugging it, straightening the strand until the end, only for it to retract back to its formal shape.
"Having fun there?" Jaehyun comments when you do the same action to other strands of his hair. Slowly, a joyful smile comes to your face and he feels relieved at the pretty sight, "Come here for a second."
He led you to stand in front of the mirror and you immediately turned back to hug your boyfriend, scowling at how messy you looked, "I think I just saw a ghost." You complain, hiding your face in his chest.Â
"Oh?" Jaehyun gasps out dramatically, "What where? I hate ghosts but I'll protect you!" Just like before, he held you close with both of his fingers intertwining behind your back.Â
You both stayed like this for a moment longer. Jaehyun's heartbeat calms you down and you exhale in contentment at the way he starts to sway from side to side slightly. The familiar scent of your shampoo, unknown to you, makes him feel the same calmness as well as he faces his insecurity head-on through the mirror.
You took notice of how Jaehyun's body felt a bit tense compared to how it was with your last hug. From the lower side angle, you can see the way that his jaw tenses at the look that the mirror is giving him, gulping at his own reflection. Turning your body around to face the mirror, still within his hold, you ignore how much you hate your own reflection, staring at your boyfriend's eyes instead.
Too deep in his thought, you rest your forearms on top of his, this time your palms on top of his like how he did before, "Love your hair, Jae."
You can see the slight flinch when your voice pulls him back to reality. You blush when he dips his chin down to your shoulder, whispering his own words to your ears, "Love your body, bubs."
The mirror showed the couple's full body, including the parts of themselves that they each hated the most. But the mirror also showed the both of them together as they embraced and basked in each other's love, reminding the other that their insecurities were valid but that they still love the other the same way.Â
You realise that when Jaehyun washed out his hairspray, using a towel to dry his hair to make his natural hair come back instantly. You realised once again that Jaehyun is truly in love with you, so patient and so kind with your journey and the smile that grew on your lips which each realisation made Jaehyun blush and bury his face onto the crook of your neck.
You remind yourself internally at this moment, as you face yourself straight into the mirror, "I'm enough and I'm gorgeous." And the deep inhale of the cold but warming air that enters your lungs, untangles Jaehyun's hands and with no pressure, places itself on your clothed stomach. He presses a kiss on the underside of your jawline, whispering sweet nothings to you.
You turn your head to face him this time, not through the mirror, the tips of your noses together, your eyes closed and your mind at peace, "Thank you."
"No, thank you." A shake of his head and a kiss on your lips, "For loving me and treating me like Iâm perfect."
âYouâre perfect in my eyes.â
âTook the words right out of my mouth.â
You were able to watch the upper half of the sunset with your friends at the beach. Seoyoon, Lyla and Sua could see the tranquillity on your face and they looked at each other, sending nods, knowing that you were fine and doing okay now. Just as you wished, you were able to fully feel the salty water around your entire body, leaving the oversized shirt somewhere on the big volume of sand behind you.
All of you know that this trip was way better than you had expected. It would be a trip that you would talk about and look back on for the rest of your life. It's a summer memory that you will hold on to not only because all your hard work in your jobs paid off, or your first trip with all your friends and boyfriend without supervision, or how Jaehyun loves you dearly.
This summer taught you that you love the people in your life right now and how fast time goes by as you surround yourself with them.
This summer gave you confidence that you will be able to go back and study more when you're back and pursue whatever it is that you want.
This summer taught you that you're enough as you are and that you should be kinder towards every part of yourself, to treat your body for going through all the hardships that life has given you.
This summer also made you fall in love with Lee Jaehyun deeper and you are sure that your relationship will grow further and stronger from now on.
You can't wait for the new things you'll learn next summer but that's something for later. For now, as the sun continues to set further and you all run back to land to set up a group photo with the scene as the background, you envelop yourself within the bounds of Jaehyun's arms.
"Love you." You quickly kiss him before turning back around to pose for the camera.
"Love you more." He squishes in audibly before the camera snaps.
Oh, how you'll remember this summer.
