But instead they chose to make the culture of piracy toxically masculine in its own right. Ed is just as trapped by the toxically masculine expectations of pirate society as Stede was by the toxically masculine expectations of upper class colonial society. This creates a parallel between Stede and Ed. They both try and escape their own worlds for each others.

However Stede does not truly find freedom from constraints of upper class colonial society through piracy and Ed does not truly find freedom from the constraints of pirate society through upper class colonial society. They find the freedom to be themselves through each other.
