genuinely, we should bring back bumppads and other bits of padding to get a fun fashion silhouette in our clothing. Forget all this stuff about "flattering your natural body type" or "getting the perfect body" or whatever. Let's just put some fake ass and thighs into the skirt and call it a day.
not the wicked broadway instagram account making the gayest galentines day post i’ve ever seen
So anyone else notice thst there's a ship dynamic that seems specific to femslash or sapphic shipping?
I'm talking about the feminine girly gal who's colour palette is 99% pink and who's usually blonde x the goth chick who's colour palette is mostly black. And the contrasting aesthetics accompany contrasting personalities.
Girly or pastel x goth is a recurring sapphic ship theme/dynamic/aesthetic, here are some examples:
Glinda x Elphaba
Raven Queen x Apple White
Queen Marceline x Princess Bubblegum
Clawdeen x Draculaura (given that we're talking about Monster High, Draculaura is rather goth herself; but the theme/contrast is still there)
And the newest edition being the sapphic ship from Wednesday which LITERALLY could not be more Pastel x Goth
Reasons behind/origins for this ship dynamic probably have something to do with:
-female duos often being "light feminine and dark feminine" and or "betty and veronica"
-opposites attract trope (both romantically and to have a strongly contrasted dynamic duo)
-maybe also "girls want bad boys" and heteronormativity mean that because of all the sweet feminine girl x bad boy stories, you get ships that are a sapphic version of this
-there's also foe romance subtext and foe yay shipping; heroes and villains are iften complete opposites, so you'll get a lot of pastel/pink/brightly dressed heroines and and goth villainesses in dark clothing
-heroines being princesses (Bubblegum and Apple) or fairies (Glinda) and villainesses being witches and evil queens (Raven and Marceline, well neither of them are evil but you get the idea)
-witches and magic often being interpreted through an lgbtq+ lens so goth sapphic witches happen (like Raven Queen or Elphaba)
-my examples include stories of two people who are on opposing sides, have opposing viewpoints and or start out as enemies. Two characters going from hating each other to being friends or lovers and two characters being very different and gradually realising that they have a lot in common are two very popular tropes for storytelling. So if you're writing a story about two characters hating each other at first but slowly becoming friends or lovers, giving them a strong contrast in aesthetic and personality highlights their differences and makes the idea of contrast and opposing characterosation more obvious. The two characters being so different and on opposite sides (Apple and Raven) makes them realising that they have a lot in common seem more meaningful. Two characters representing two opposing sides and their platonic or romantic love symbolising possible peace and acceptance is a classic storyline and it works.
-and again opposites attract is just reaaly popular. A strong visual and personality contrast is one of the most common ship themes ever
So if you combine the fact the female duos are often light feminine and dark feminine, opposites attract trope, enemies to friends or lovers and and foe yay... Plus the fact that a lot of fans love shipping enemies and opposites attract duos wether or not it's canon (for example Barbie and Raquelle aren't a couple but if they were they would be girly x goth; and because of foe yay shipping there's definitely ppl who ship them)... So yeah the reason this dynamic is so popular is probably the result of the combination of how storylines, romances and friendships are often written (enemies to platonic or romantic lovers and opposites attract) and of how media portrays and classifies female characters (dark feminine and light feminine). Put these two together and... Yeah... Opposites attract pastel femme and goth femme lesbians. Yeah it makes a lot of sense why there'd be both canon and fanon ships with this dynamic. It just works.
Anyway I fucking LOVE this ship dynamic (opposites attract and visual contrast are among my fave tropes) and yeah this is a whole post dedicated to it.
