Wait, you made all the music for Double King yourself? That's so cool! Had you already been making music when you started DK, or did you learn?
I’ve always been “doing music” in some capacity- my mother is a music teacher, and so I was practicing and studying music since I was very small. However “writing music” in that context generally meant writing sheet music, for something that I could play by myself on one instrument (usually piano). Figuring out recording audio, operating digital music software, and what I want to do with it all, has been a slow process of unlearning and relearning happening in the background of other things that I’m meant to be doing. Not with any particular ambition, just a creative break from visual art. Nobody ever hears any of it.
With Double King, I wasn’t originally going to do the music myself because I thought it’d be too much work, and someone who makes music as their full time thing would surely do it better. But in the end I knew exactly what it needed to sound like, and me amateurishly making the right sound was ultimately going to be closer to the mark than someone expertly making a different sound.
So the positive reception to the film’s music, and now all these people buying the album, has been a very pleasant surprise. As much as I knew the sounds would compliment the visuals, I didn’t expect anyone to like the music by itself nearly this much. I don’t know if that means I’ll be posting other music online any time soon, but heck, I guess I’ve already made the Bandcamp page
Hello! My newest short film, “Dry Run”, appears as a segment in the latest episode of Adult Swim’s Off The Air, which is now on YouTube in its entirety! Today’s episode is about HEALTH. My segment appears at 5:08 and is about a Trolval, a “monstrous whale of ill-intent” and one of the recurring sea monster motifs that would adorn European maps in the 1500s, particularly in the uncharted spots they assumed were full of horrible things that would kill you. Growing up in one of those then-uncharted monster spots, Australia, I can’t help but notice the Western World still, quite unfairly, talks about our actual wildlife the same way. If indeed “Here Be Dragons” as the maps say, they’re probably on the endangered species list. ENJOY!
