my heart stopped beating, such a softer sin
initially i only posted a reply to this (from my personal acct - jooniesdimples) because i didn't expect it to develop into a full blown discussion but given the limits of commenting on a post versus reblogging...here we are! also on my writing account rather than my personal account so i don't inundate those separate followers with the bts posts that i usually save for this blog anyway.
@here2bbtstrash, to your response of:
sorry but something being ~creative~ does not excuse it from all judgement, nothing exists in a vacuum. I see you found Hali’s post by way of me, so you can feel free to unfollow me if you’re that upset by this line of thinking, because I stand by it 100% and I’m not interested in arguing. (also - weird how you said you usually ignore “ignorant” things and yet….. had the time to wax your unasked for thoughts on this post? hmmm 🤔)
i think the same "nothing exists in a vacuum" extends to everything that we post online. i'm not actually one of your followers, as you can probably tell already from a quick check of your following list - tumblr recommended your posts to me bc i like bts fics. so nothing whether it's what we write creatively or what we decide to opine on exists in a vacuum when we post online. people are going to like it and agree with or not like it and not agree with it and as you said "it costs zero dollars not to put your opinions on the internet"; it is similarly free to express yourself because that's literally what this platform is for. if you don't want any sort of engagement on your posts, then you wouldn't post just as if i didn't want any engagement, i wouldn't have responded. however, i don't think it has to be hostile engagement just because it's two different opinions.
as i said in the 2nd part of my response to @haliiimede, i believe that OP was speaking with the best intentions. i added that because it seems that without it, it's very easy to assume that everyone on the internet who disagrees with us is looking to "argue". i also wasn't looking to argue when i disagreed.
the reason i even bothered to respond - which i thought i was doing clearly and calmly - was because i thought that the way the original post was worded was intelligent enough to engage with. it seems @here2bbtstrash took offense with my use of the word "ignorance" which i used to describe other posts i've seen and not this post in particular. i apologize if that was unclear to you.
my issue is not that creativity should be free of judgement - i can forgive you for incorrectly assuming that since, again, i only had so much space to express myself in a reply - my disagreement was with the idea of one writer telling others that they should censure themselves when it comes to what they're writing. i see now in @haliiimede's response that the point was for her personally and for what her followers can expect but the language made the scope of the post seem larger to me, especially as it gains traction.
for me, personally, as i tried to explain, i responded because i think that if that wider lens of judgement is applied to fandom writing, it becomes a very dangerous and close-minded mindset because my hope would be that the point of creativity and expression is also at least partially about building community within spaces. i see a lot of negativity and condescension in fandom spaces that exists in antithesis to that community aspect which only serves to make writers feel "othered" in this space.
when i read that post, that was what i initially saw: othering and an attempt to shame other writers for what appeals to them and how they choose to process or grieve or pass the time or whatever. i think it's worthwhile to think about issues from another pov. it seems that writing about bts pushes other writers to consider cultures, ideas, ways of being, etc outside of their own. my disagreement comes because i think other writers who have never had a reason to care should then read something else and do their research and explore other ideas and have conversations and think critically about what's happening in the world outside of their own bubbles. i personally believe that is a very important part of reading and writing. that doesn't mean that i like everything i come across or agree with everything i read or think that every opinion expressed is the most nuanced but that wasn't the point of my response.
i hope that clears everything up and eases your assumptions that i was just picking a fight.
Small PSA that I think is incredibly important as I have seen discourse all day: you will not see any content on this blog that involve anything pertaining to enlistment, military service etc. for BTS. As someone who is not politically, historically, culturally or locally in a position to make opinions, provide accurate representation, or provide any context to the enlistment and military service of BTS, I will not be participating in any discussion or content creation on the topic. And respectfully, unless you are a native of SK with an extensive understanding of the SK government and culture, I highly recommend you do the same. No amount of research or discussion can put you, an outsider, in a position to represent, make informative opinions and statements, or creative pieces on such serious and complex topics, no matter how informed you think you are, how much research you’ve done, or what you think you know.
This is the first and last time I’ll be saying anything on the topic.
