Rest easy, knowing that all the matter in your body existed at the beginning of time, and will continue to exist well after you end. It’s Melanie King Monday.
“September came in with golden days and silver nights,”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, from The Return of the King
Currently thinking a lot about Rebels, and specifically the exchange between Ezra and Sabine in the first episode of season 3, after he controls the guy, the—
“When did Kanan teach you that?”
“He didn’t.”
Because there’s so much in those short lines that speaks into the space between seasons. That, to me, is such a strong depiction of Ezra’s slide toward the dark side, because there’s a sort of double meaning to Ezra’s words:
There’s definitely an accusation here. By saying that Kanan didn’t teach him that, it’s both speaking to this specific skill and the overarching problem of the episode: that Kanan has been distant from everyone as a result of what happened to him, and without him, Ezra is without a teacher, without a guide to the way of the Jedi. And, while not entirely Kanan’s fault (I can understand a certain level of trauma after getting blinded), this does speak into the fact that Ezra has been left behind by so many people, even unintentionally, and so it makes sense that he turns somewhere else—but he turns to the wrong place.
Also, though, I think it shows something that Ezra isn’t meaning: Kanan didn’t teach him that because Kanan wouldn’t teach him that. Taking over every part of another person, removing their free will, is something we see the Sith do easily, but never the Jedi. And here, we see the consequences of Ezra trying to find his own way, and we see how his learned behaviors—survival, fending for himself in the face of an enemy, etc.—are easily manipulated by the dark side if there isn’t someone there to help stop that from happening.
And I think that it’s both really cool that those larger messages of the episode can come through in that one brief exchange AND a testament to the character work with Ezra, because his dabbling in the dark side is still in line with the goals of his character: to survive. To protect those he loves. To learn to use the Force. To be strong.
I could go on and talk about how it strengthens the portrayal of Kanan and Ezra’s relationship, but that’s a whole other post waiting to be made.
