ASL brothers!

(pls im new here n dont know how tumblr work ;-;)

Thinking about ASL bros again and Ace's self-worth issues-

but mostly about Ace and Sabo meeting before Luffy joined them, and how their friendship progressed despite their obvious differences? Idk there's just something alluring about the friendship between two boys where one was a highborn noble and the other was essentialy raised by wolves.

So please consider - it might be OOC but idc, I'm here for ASL (or just AS in this case) feels - a situation where Ace might've kinda subconsciously struggled with having Sabo as his friend at first? I mean yeah, Sabo didn't admit he was the son of a noble for a long while, but then it wasn't that hard to tell either. I'm sure Ace would've noticed the difference in what kind of words Sabo used, how well-made and clean his clothes were (the tophat??) or how much Sabo actually knew (bc he surely had a governess or some other teacher and got education, again - as a noble's son) -

and I'm just thinking about a situation where idk Ace found something and wanted to show it to Sabo, and Sabo reached out to get it from him and Ace could clearly see how different even their hands were side by side: how Sabo's hands were mostly clean, smooth and soft, with cared-for nails, no calluses in sight and Ace's hands were the complete opposite. How he couldn't help but think about that afterwards, how Sabo resembles some sort of prince (Sabo has read books to him probably, or they looked at the illustrations together) and Ace is more like a feral, forest beast - all layers of dirt, chipped and bitten nails, greasy, tangled hair and second-hand, too-big clothes, so how can Sabo even be friends with him? Sabo probably noticed eventually something was wrong, and Ace insisted that everything was fine, but still remained a walking image of self-consciousness. Maybe he was suddenly reluctant to touch Sabo directly? Maybe he blurted out a rushed sorry after touching Sabo's jacket with a muddy hand? Maybe Sabo saw how Ace kept his fingers curled into fists, or kept his hands generally close to himself, behind his back, out of the view (maybe he saw how red and scratched the skin was, as if Ace tried to scrub them clean with water and sand?). Only for Sabo to finally get tired of this and tell him he's stupid and that Sabo doesn't care about stupid things like that and Ace - just as he is - is so much better than his own entire family anyway (and then Sabo proceeded to steal bars of soap and shampoo and a bunch of Stelly's clothes and bring them to Ace next time they met).

Maybe they spent the entire afternoon by the river - Ace trying on Stelly's clothes and Sabo laughing his ass off at him bc of how ridiculous he looked and how his usual worn t-shirts and shorts were a much better fit anyway. And then they sat by the river's edge and Sabo let him smell all the soaps he's brought so he could pick his favourites, and then offered to wash and comb Ace's hair for him.

(Ace's hair got all wavy, almost curly when it was freshly-washed, and Sabo had him look at their reflections in the water water and told him they kinda do look like twins. Even if they obviously didn't.)

And how Sabo kept carrying out all sorts of things from his house to Ace - fancy candy, books, blankets, toothbrushes, cutlery even (things that his house was filled with so he was used to them, but Ace looked at them like they were some sort of otherwordly objects) and how Ace, in turn, who didn't really have anything of "value" to repay Sabo for all of that - scoured the Gray Terminal for all sorts of discarded trinkets and damaged devices, or just hunted rabbits, caught fish, collected fruit for Sabo - and reveled in how Sabo always looked so excited to be able to cook the meat himself over a fire (and eat it with his hands, something he was never allowed to do at home) or how they sat by the fire afterwards, huddled together, staying up into the late night hours, looking at the trinkets Ace found and coming up with all sorts of ridiculous ideas on what they might be used for or how to fix them.

Idk just. They were both so lonely? Before they met each other. So it's not surprising that they quickly became each other's favourite/most important person, but what's interesting is that it all happened despite their class/heritage differences.

(it's like that scene in Lilo&Stitch - when Lilo prayed for a friend and to be sent the nicest angel there was - except it was Sabo who wished for a friend and got a feral, bloodthirsty Ace instead lmfao).
