One morning, out of the blue, you realized that your husband, Kyojuro, had crow's feet. 

He was holding your hand across the breakfast table, his grip firm and reassuring as he excitedly told you the story of how his brother, Senjuro had finally proposed to his sweetheart.

As adorable as the story was, you found yourself zoning out and just losing yourself in the beauty of the man you were honored to call yours. 

Kyojuro's smile was warm and inviting. Years ago it had been his smile which really elevated him in your estimation from "cute guy" to "husband material." And now, as you approached twenty years of marriage, that smile– that beautiful, contagious smile– had left permanent creases at the corners of his eyes.

Somehow he had become even more gorgeous over the years; a seemingly impossible achievement, since he was by far the most breathtaking man you had ever laid eyes on from day one. Twenty years ago he'd been so, so pretty. But now… god, he was stunning: older, fuller, with little strands of platinum just beginning to peek through his blonde hair. 

Kyojuro was living proof that perfection could be improved upon, and you were as smitten with him as you had been in those early days. More so, in fact. 

But it wasn't just his beauty or the generosity of his smiles. It was the fact that he had made it this far.

Despite everything; despite demons and battles, near misses, injuries, and endless nights of worry, he was still by your side, and had lived and laughed long enough to be blessed with crow's feet. 

A sudden silence snapped you from your reverie.

"Love?" Kyojuro smiled before he spoke once more. "I'm talking too much, aren't I?"

"Never. Please go on."

His creases deepened as his smile spread and broke into a chuckle. "Well, what do you think?"

"About...?"

He laughed, giving your hand a gentle squeeze. "My question. About their wedding gift."

"Oh... I'm sorry..."

"You were among the clouds my love. It's okay. It's early."

Your cheeks grew warm. "No it's not that it's just... I really love you, Kyojuro."

He softened, stroking his thumb over the peaks of your knuckles. "I love you too."

He stood then, one hand braced on the breakfast table as he leaned across and kissed you, his lips soft and warm, pulling you in and making your heart flutter. 

When the kiss broke he smiled, his brilliant gold and ruby eyes traversing your face. "You know, I love these little lines here." He brushed his finger so lightly against the fine crescent-shaped wrinkles forming at the corners of your lips. "Your smile lines. They're so beautiful."
