HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 3

Zedaph x Professor Layton

An image of Minecraft youtuber Zedaph on a pale yellow-brown background. He's drawn in the style of the Professor Layton games. He's smiling excitedly and waving to someone off screen. In his left hand is a rope that extends up above his head and off the image, so we can't see what's on the other end. Knowing Zed, it is likely something hilarious and confusing. He also has pointy ears and tiny sheep horns because I can't help myself, I love fusing these funny block people with creatures. You can probably blame Doc for that, I think he started it.

I drew Zedaph in the style of the fabulous puzzle adventure game series Professor Layton! I think this is perfect for Zedaph because, like Professor Layton himself, Zed loves to make everything much more complicated and mind-bending than it needs to be simply for the whimsy of it. And we wouldn't have it any other way! If you want to learn more about the Professor Layton games and look at my reference images, continue below the cut.

Professor Layton is a series of adventure puzzle games that follows the titular gentleman professor and his child protégé, Luke, as they solve mysteries. The games are packed full of creative challenges ranging from logic problems to visual riddles, which the characters encounter through the events of the story. While difficult (if you're like me and refuse to use hints or walkthroughs), the game is very rewarding and set a cozy pseudo-steampunk world that's a delight to explore. These were some of my favourite games to play on my DS as a kid. Style references:

Professor Layton and Luke standing are standing in the center of a ring of people. Layton and Luke are holding a piece of paper and look alarmed and defensive. The people around them have various expressions, most of which are conspiratorial or gossipy. Everyone is overlaid in a sepia tone except for Layton and Luke.

A collection of characters from Professor Layton and the Curious Village, the first game in the series.

A cleaned-up screencap from one of the older DS games. It shows Luke standing in a kitchen of some kind, speaking to a sad looking cartoon hamster. Luke is smiling and saying ''OK, little chap, from now on, anywhere I go, you'll go too''. Did I mention anywhere that nearly everyone in the game is super British?

A de-pixelated remaster of a screencap from Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, the second game.

An image of the Professor Layton game logo, which consists of the words ''Professor Layton'' written in maroon. The font used looks sophisticated. The entire logo sits in an oval, the outline of which is the same color as the text. To the left side of the logo is the silhouette of a top hat with a fancy, stylized ''L'' in the center.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 5

TinFoilChef x The Lord of the Rings (1978)

A drawing of Minecraft youtuber TFC sitting serenely on a stone inside a cave. He is looking off to his right, past his pickaxe, which is resting against a stalagmite nearby. The cave is illuminated from the center, making it look like TFC himself is the source of light in the image. Rest in peace, TFC.

For TFC, I chose Ralph Bakshi's animated 1978 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. I picked this one for TFC because he always made me think of Tolkein dwarves (what with the beard and the love of mining) and I wanted to draw him content and taking a rest in a cave. Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings, with its beautiful painted backgrounds, was the perfect fit here. If you want to learn more about Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings and see my reference images, take a look under the cut! (And of course, don't forget about the fundraiser for Gamers Outreach! Today is the BONUS DAY DOLLAR DRIVE so go throw in a dollar if you can!)

Ralph Bakshi's 1978 The Lord of the Rings is the direct origin of many of the designs and visual concepts that would later be used in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. While I love both adaptations, Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings is much lesser known now and overshadowed by the live-action movies, which is genuinely a shame. The movie covers the events of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers but the final Return of the King installment was never made. The animation is visually interesting and a little strange, since it uses traditional cartoon cell animation in combination with rotoscoping. The animation is overlaid on a series of atmospheric painted backgrounds which creates a beautifully surreal viewing experience. I watched Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings as a kid with my family and I just want more people to see and appreciate it too.

Style references:

Gimli and Boromir are seated at a wooden table at the Council of Elrond, talking about what to do with the Ring of Power. Gimli, on the left, has a long red beard and a floppy yellow-brown hat and Boromir, on the right, has a brown beard and is wearing a fur tunic and horned helmet. He looks like a viking.

The animated characters don't have any shading in most scenes and stand out from the very dynamically shaded backgrounds. There is a wide range of character designs in the movie, but for TFC I followed the design choices seen in the human characters and Gimli.

A watercolor painting of a ruined stone bridge over a chasm deep in the Mines of Moria. The mines are illuminated in yellow and green with dark blue shadows.

The backgrounds for the movie are stunning. This image in particular is actually concept art for the Mines of Moria, but it is in line with actual backgrounds from the movie and I really liked it so I used it as my primary inspiration for TFC's cave.

A title which reads: J. R. R. Tolkein's ''The Lord of the Rings''. The title is in red lettering with a texture that looks like old, torn parchment. Beneath the title it says: A Saul Zaentz Production, A Ralph Bakshi Film. The entire title is on a white background.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 4

Keralis x Lupin the 3rd: Part 2

A drawing of Minecraft youtuber, Keralis, in the style of Lupin the 3rd. He is standing on a bright orange background, winking, and pointing his finger at you as if it is a gun. Above him is his own name in bold, blocky white text.

₊˚⊹⋆ This is a robbery 8D ⋆⊹˚₊

Lupin the 3rd is an adult comedy anime series about a charismatic thief who robs from the rich and gives to himself (and his buddies). I drew Keralis in this style for the meme (and the massive eyes). Please be aware: Lupin the 3rd is an old series that has a LOT of crass sexual humor. Trust me, like, boob jokes galore on a tame day. All installments of the Lupin franchise (that I've seen anyway) are aimed at an adult audience. To see my style references and learn more about Lupin the 3rd (specifically Lupin the 3rd: Part 2) journey below the cut!

But real quick, before you click 'keep reading', let me remind you that this year for Hermit a Day May there is a fundraiser for Gamers Outreach with incentives from the fabulous artists @belmarzi and @rendiggitydog so don't forget to go check that out too!

Lupin the 3rd: Part 2 follows the misadventures of the grandson of gentleman thief Arsène Lupin of literary fame. The show tells the story of Lupin and his friends as they pull wacky heists to steal from the wealthy, get rich, and avoid the dogged police detective, Zenigata, who follows them everywhere and is definitely not in love with Lupin. This show has made me do an embarrassing bark laugh many times against my will. It is not a show to take too seriously as Lupin is, at his core, a clown of a man who hangs out with two overly serious boyfriends platonic buddies who are pretending as hard as they can that they are not also clowns. The only consistently competent person in the entire show is Lupin's will-they-won't-they love interest, Fujiko, who tries her best to kill him every other episode.

Style references:

There are four people in the car, driving through a desert. The two men in the back are looking at you, smirking. The guy on the right is standing up and shooting at you - this guy is Lupin. You are viewing this entire scene through a bullet hole that's been made in what looks like a red piece of cloth.

Lupin and the gang! Lupin is the guy who is shooting you.

Lupin and his best friend Jigen (who is in love with him I cannot stress enough how canon this is) are floating in the sky. They have their arms around each other and Lupin is laughing. You can't see Jigen's eyes due to his fedora, but he is smiling, probably because of how in love he is with Lupin.

Lupin and Jigen, the man whose heart he stole (this is canon). They're inseparable.

Lupin is visible from the chest up on the right side. He is winking and smiling at you while holding a gun, which is pointed up. On the top left is the title ''Lupin the Third Part II'' written in white blocky font with a black outline and a drawing of a gun beside the text. The entire image is on a bright orange background. In the bottom left is the copyright information for Monkey Punch, the manga artist who created Lupin the 3rd.

Lupin the 3rd: Part 2 has multiple title designs. I picked this one because it's my favourite.
