Part One

It took a few months of practice, but Drake managed to successfully circumvent his circadian rhythm. 

Dusk to dawn are his new waking hours, and blackout curtains let him sleep through the hours of the day when the rest of the world is buzzing and bright. Even when his patrols are less than exciting, training and biking back and forth across the city (and enduring WANDA’s attitude) exhaust him in ways not even stunt work did. Instead, they remind him eerily of long nights as a dual theater/chemistry major. 

 The nights’ accumulations of aches and pains usually make for dreamless sleep. Even his recurring nightmare of Jim’s immolation, which takes on the fictional spin of his childhood hero reaching out to him through the flames, becomes a twice-monthly occurrence instead of twice-weekly. 

Then Gosalyn breaks her way into his life, all sharp bleeding edges and utter disregard for personal safety. 

Then reality as they know it is almost torn apart. 

It’s fitting, then, that Drake’s nightmares become an almost daily occurrence. Precious hours of sleep elude him as he tosses and turns, ripped from one terror to the next, each more real than dreams have any right to be. 

Bud Flud tips over the railing, falling into a chemical bath of his own making. He goes under with an almighty splash, the stray droplets burning holes in Darkwing’s coat. Flud’s hand flails above the surface, his fur and skin already beginning to slough off. 

Negaduck looms over Gosalyn, his costume acidic yellow and angry red, sneering from the opposite end of a revving chainsaw raised high over his head. 

Bulba chuckles, his voice so deep it reverberates through the air. “I have always been a gambling man.”
