Writing a Creepy Setting: Tips and Examples

Creating a creepy setting is an essential element of horror and suspense writing. It sets the tone for the story, establishes a mood, and can make the reader feel like they are part of the experience. A good setting can be as much a character in the story as any of the people involved, adding to the tension and keeping the reader engaged.Â
Whether you're writing a novel, a short story, or a screenplay, crafting a creepy setting can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Unsure how to write a creepy setting? Here are some tips and examples to help you create a setting that will send shivers down your readers' spines.
Use Descriptive Language
To create a creepy setting, itâs important to use vivid and descriptive language to engage your reader's senses. The more senses you can activate, the more immersive the setting becomes. Use descriptive language to evoke strong emotions in your reader, whether it's fear, disgust, or unease.
For example, instead of simply describing a room as "dark," you could use phrases like "light-starved" or "shrouded in shadows." Instead of a "creaking door," you could use "a tortured groan that reverberated through the empty hall." The more specific and visceral your language, the more your reader will feel like they're in the story.
Just be careful not to go overboard with your descriptions. Too much description can slow down the pacing of your story and distract from the overall mood you're trying to create. Use just enough description to set the tone and let the reader's imagination fill in the rest.
Create An Unsettling EnvironmentÂ
In addition to descriptive language, utilizing sound and lighting can also help create a creepy setting. Sound can be used to create tension and unease, while lighting can play a crucial role in setting the tone and mood.
For example, you can use flickering lights to create an unsettling effect. The sudden and irregular changes in lighting can make your readers feel like something is amiss, or that danger is lurking just around the corner. Similarly, you can use deep shadows to create a sense of foreboding, or bright lights to create a sense of unease or discomfort.
When it comes to sound, you can use a variety of techniques to create a creepy atmosphere. For instance, you can use dissonant or jarring sounds to create a sense of chaos or confusion. Alternatively, you can use eerie, quiet sounds to create a sense of tension and anticipation.
Some examples of unsettling sounds you can use include creaking doors, footsteps, distant screams or laughter, whispers, or even the sound of breathing. You can also play around with the volume and timing of these sounds to create a sense of unease or suspense.
Overall, by using sound and lighting to create a creepy setting, you can immerse your readers in the world of your story and make them feel like they are part of the action. This can help to heighten the tension and suspense, and keep your readers engaged and invested in your story.
Use Appropriate SettingsÂ
Using weather can be an effective way to create a creepy and unsettling atmosphere in your setting. For example, a sudden storm or a dense fog can obscure visibility and make characters feel isolated and vulnerable. Conversely, an oppressive heatwave can create a sense of claustrophobia and discomfort.
Consider how you can use weather to enhance the mood of your scene. Use vivid descriptions to bring the weather to life and make it feel like a character in its own right. You could also use weather to foreshadow events or create a sense of foreboding. For example, a sudden drop in temperature or an unnatural silence in the midst of a storm can signal that something unsettling is about to happen.
Don't be afraid to get creative with your use of weather. Experiment with different weather patterns and their effects on your characters and setting. With the right combination of descriptive language and atmospheric detail, you can use weather to immerse your readers in a creepy and unsettling world.
Set the Scene
When it comes to creating a creepy setting, it's important to set the scene properly. This means creating a vivid picture in the reader's mind of where the story takes place. The setting should be described in a way that immediately evokes a sense of unease or foreboding, and it should be clear that something is not quite right.
To do this effectively, you need to pay attention to the details. Describe the lighting, the sounds, the smells, and the textures of the environment in great detail. Think about the layout of the space and how it affects the characters and the story. Is it cramped and claustrophobic, or vast and empty?
For example, consider the opening scene of Stephen King's "The Shining." He sets the scene by describing the hotel as "huge, great, titanic, yet full of queer old-fashioned charm." He goes on to describe the long, empty hallways and the way the light filters through the dusty windows, creating strange patterns on the walls. By the end of the first page, the reader is already feeling a sense of unease and foreboding, even though nothing has really happened yet.
Use the Five Senses
To create a truly immersive and creepy setting, it's important to engage all of your reader's senses. By utilizing sensory language, you can transport your readers directly into the scene and make them feel like they're experiencing it firsthand.
Here are some ways to incorporate the five senses into your writing:
Sight: Use vivid descriptions to paint a picture in your reader's mind. For example, "The moon cast an eerie glow on the deserted streets, casting long shadows behind the empty buildings."
Sound: Describe the sounds that your characters hear, whether it's the creaking of old floorboards or the distant howl of a wolf. This can help create an atmosphere of tension and unease.
Touch: Consider how different textures and sensations might affect your characters. Is the air damp and clammy? Are the walls cold and rough to the touch?
Smell: The sense of smell is closely linked to memory and emotion, so it can be a powerful tool for creating an immersive setting. For example, the smell of rotting wood or musty books might evoke a sense of decay and neglect.
Taste: While taste may not always be relevant in a creepy setting, it can be used sparingly to create a visceral reaction in the reader. For example, the taste of blood in the character's mouth might indicate a traumatic event or dangerous situation.
By incorporating sensory language into your writing, you can create a fully realized and terrifying setting that will keep your readers on the edge of their seats.
Play with Expectations
One effective way to create a creepy setting is to play with the reader's expectations. This can be done in a number of ways, such as subverting a common horror trope or creating a false sense of security before pulling the rug out from under the reader.
For example, if you're writing a horror story that takes place in a haunted house, you could play with the idea of the ghost being a malevolent force. Instead, the ghost could be a sympathetic character that is only seeking peace or justice. This subversion of expectations can create a sense of unease in the reader, as they are unsure of what to expect next.
Another way to play with expectations is to create a false sense of security. For instance, you could introduce a seemingly harmless character that the reader becomes attached to, only to reveal later that they are actually the villain. This can be a powerful tool in creating tension and building suspense.
Remember, playing with expectations doesn't always have to mean subverting them completely. Sometimes, it can be as simple as delaying the expected jump scare or twist, drawing out the tension and making the eventual payoff all the more satisfying.

Chapter synopsis: The end of the story.

LONDON, 1921
Tommy sits in his chair, unmoving. Dying was a becomes an issue to him if it affected you this way. Ever since the war, he thought that he was living for free. It didnât matter if he died now since he was on the verge of dying every day in France butâŚwas this a physical manifestation of what you felt every single day for the four years that he was gone?
âI only have less than three hours left,â you mumbled, eyebrows furrowing on the teacup on the table. âIâm not-Iâm not supposed to be here, TommyâŚhe will kill you if he catches me here.â you whispered, afraid to let the whole world know about how terrible Simon truly was.Â
âHey, youâre alright,â his voice soothes you; the raspiness sending shivers down your spine. He was sitting beside you now, a hand on your bouncing knee. âI made sure youâre alright,â
âTommy, I know that you hate me,â you sobbed, shaking your head.  âIâm sorry for what-what I did but IâŚwe had these plans together ofâof living in a future where itâs just us andââ
âItâs alright,â he says. Seeing you risk everything just to warn him was already enough proof that you were sorry. âIâm sorry for all of the things that I said that night,â
âYouâve-youâve got to believe me when I tell you that IâŚI sent you letters every week,â you pleaded. âI know that you might think that I forgot about you, but I never forgot about you, Tom. Iâm sorry for believing that youâd think I was replaceableâŚthat I didnât matter to you,â you whispered the last part, hands on your lap forming into fists.Â
Would now be a wrong time to tell you that he loves you?Â
âHow do youâŚâ he coughs, trying to veer away from the road where you were going. He couldnât do this now, not when everythingâs slowly set in motion. âHow did you get the information?â
You fished for the paper in your clutch, showing it to him.Â
âI received this during a charity dinner in London,â you said. âI tried everything to put Simon away from youâŚbut I couldnât. I failed and nowâŚnow heâs out to kill you,âÂ
âHeâs not going to kill me,â he replied. âIt was Alfieâs men who put that there,â
âBut he will!â you exclaimed, looking up at him. âHe knows Alfie SolomonsâŚâ
âSo do I,â he calmly says. âAlfie Solomons and I have an agreement,â
âHe killed Johnny,â you warned him, but he was looking at you blankly and you feel despondent. âAlfie SolomonsâŚkilled Johnny. Has he not?â
âIt was Darby Sabini who killed Johnny. To retaliate, I infiltrated the Eden Club. Alfie Solomonsâ men were in charge of security and protection but Darby Sabiniâs in charge of whatever dirty work Simon wanted to get done. Their dealings started recently with Johnnyâs death,â he says. âItâs notâI,â he sighs, not finding the right words to say.
âTommyâŚâ
âWhatever happens to me isnât your fault, Y/N.â He means it, you could tell but a small part of you still couldnât quite grasp the measures that Simon will undertake to keep you close. âY/N, love, itâs alright,â
âNo- IâŚI can still try to persuade Simon. Iâll give that-that heir he wants so bad just please donâtâŚâ you heaved, choking on your own tears. The way Tommy said itâŚlike he knew that he was dying soon made you feel cold. You've come so far, would you really let Simon kill Tommy that easily? Tommy's hand on your knee tightens momentarily but he lets it go.
âYou will do nothing of that sort,â his throat constricts. âYou wonât have to do things you donât want to anymore. IâmâIâm here now. I want you to be happy and Iâll do everything to make sure that you are but if an heir with him is something that youââ
âI donât want to carry his child,â you shook your head. âTommy, canât you see? I just want you to live and beâbe happy. We both changed since you left. The war took so, so much from you, Tom. Weâve both said things we cannot take back but God, Tommy. I want us to be happy and I want you to rest,âÂ
âWe can rest togetherâŚbe happy together,â he proposes. âOur future isnât that far away ifââ
âHow?â you asked, voice small and eyes full of tears. âHow?â
âNo more running away. I have a plan,â he tells you, but he didnât want to divulge the details. His blue eyes stare directly into you. His face was blank, but his body was leaning towards you, gentle hand still on your knee. âHey,â he says, putting his hands on top of yours. You started to pick on your nail beds again. He interlocks his fingers with yours and you smile slightly. Just like when you were kids.Â
âSorry,â
âY/N,â he stops himself. Why did you have to apologize for everything?. âIâŚI wrote to you,â
âTommyââ
âI did. I waited for your letter everyday. I-I would be the first one to be there when letters were being sent but I sent them to Watery Lane,â he says. âI canât go on with this without you knowing that I waited for you. I donât want you to think that Iâve abandoned you because I donât. I could never.â
He didnât know where his courage was coming from. Maybe it was because he could feel the end coming soon. He was so scared to die without letting you know about what he truly felt for you, no matter how selfish that sounded. He wouldnât die until he tells you about how much he loved you, about how deep this love ran through him.
âI knowâŚArthur told me,â you nodded. You blink away the tears that threatened to fall. âItâs me who didnât wait for you and I-I regret it every day, you know? Not waitingâŚbecause I wouldnâtâI wouldnât be here if I did andâIâve always believed in your promises, Tommy. I knew that you were going to keep them but Iââ
âItâs okay, itâs okay,â he soothes you, heâd be asking Arthur about that sometime. âIâm not angry. Iâm alright, youâre alright, weâre alright,â You didnât believe him though and neither did he.Â
âTommy?â you asked. âDo you know who tried to stop the letters?â
âI do,â he replied.
âYou donât want to tell me?â
 He hums.
âCan you hold me? Instead of telling me?â
Borrowed time, you were on borrowed time and all you wanted was Tommyâs arms around you. Love is a funny thing. The world was ending and all you could ever think of is how Tommyâs hands were made for destruction, but they were also made to hold yours.Â
-
The house was dark when you came back. For a house filled with servants, the house was quiet  An eerie feeling washes over you and you walked on, looking for anyone. Instead, the fireplace was open, flames roaring while your husband sat. He was looking intently into the fire, smoking his pipe.Â
âWhere did you go?â
âOut and about,â you said, the lie rolling perfectly from your tongue.Â
âI see,â he nods. âDid you know that Ada Shelby was abducted today?â
You stopped, ice creeping up your spine.
âTommy Shelby captured the Eden Club owned by Sabini and then, Sabini abducted Ada Shelby.â he says it like it was nothing. âI wonder why Tommy Shelby captured the Eden Club. Do you happen to know why?â
âNo, Simon,â you shakily replied. âWhyâŚ?â
âBecause Darby Sabini killed Big Johnny. Do you know why?â he asked. âYou donât because youâre a fucking idiot, but Iâll lay it down for you. Nice and simple so you can understand. I ordered the death of Big Johnny to punish you for hiding who Tommy Shelby was. I ordered Adaâs abduction because you went to see Tommy Shelby today. I ordered for the death of all the Shelbysâeven the children so you would never have to worry about them. I tried to be reasonable, but you wouldnât listen. Maybe youâd listen to me once all of those Birmingham rats are dead, hm? Youâll have to carry the weight of their deaths in your shoulder because you wouldnât listen. Itâs your fault theyâre dying. Itâs your fault that Johnny died. I liked him and you killed him,â
âI gave you everything. I love you with all of me and all that I have but youâŚyou still love someone else. What do I have to do for you to love me like you love him?â he asked. He wasnât looking at you, he was just unmovingâŚsmoking his pipe like he was telling you about todayâs weather. You were shaking, afraid for them and for your life.Â
âStop crying,â he orders you, but you couldnât stop. How could you? He just revealed all of his plansâall the things that he wanted to do to them. âGo to our room and stop fucking crying!â
-
âWell, you look like shit,â Polly says, seeing Tommy on the hospital bed. âWhat did you do this time?â
âSabiniâs men took me and beat me up,â
âThey wouldnât beat you up without anything. They wouldnât abduct Ada without reason. I heard that someonedecided to drop by. What did you talk about?â
âNothing that I donât already know,â he shrugs. âCan you pass me a cigarette?â
âYou want me to help you but youâre not fucking telling me anything,â Polly says, tossing the pack to Tommyâs chest. âWhat is it, Tommy?â
âPollââ
âTom,â she asserts sternly. âYou tell me now or I will get it out of her,â
âFuck,â he groans, head falling back. âSimon killed Johnny and ordered Sabini to kill all of us. They know that I was staying at Adaâs and saw her enter Adaâs house and got us to where we are now,â
âFuckâŚbut weâre talking about our lives here, Tom.â Polly stresses. âDo you think that you get to have a say on whether or not weâre dying just because of a promise you made when you were young and naive?â
âI think itâs better if you all leave me to deal with this wholeâŚthing,â Tommy says. âYouâre right. Your life is on the line and Iâm not really accomplishing anything if you all fucking die because of me. Itâs not Y/Nâs fault. ItâsâŚthat fucking husband of hers! If you really want to know, PollyâŚsince you did give her away, yeah? Simonâs out to get all of us, even Y/N.â
Polly feels her throat tighten. ThisâŚthis is what she gave you away for. Her nephew on the brink of dying, Ada with multiple fucking bruises, the threat of death, and then, the receiver of all angerâŚyou.Â
âThat girl is like my daughter,â Polly says. âI will help you, Tom but you have to promise me thatâthat you will be honest with me. Donât keep us in the fucking dark. Itâs not your own problem anymore. Itâs ours,â
âAlright,â
âI know you have a plan. What is it?â Polly asked, inhaling. âHonesty, Tom,â
âIâŚI made a deal with Alfie Solomons. We are alliances. He works with Simon for Y/Nâs security and I allowed a few of his bookies to be in the racetracks in exchange of ensuringâŚwell, Y/Nâs safety,â It was half the truth. The other details, Tommy had to omit to ensure the executionâ
âStop fucking hiding,â Poll warns. âTommy, you have to tell me,â
âFuckââ he coughs. âEverything is set in motion, PollâŚthereâs nothing else,â Polly looks at Tommy, there was no way for him to let up anything. Tommy was just staring at her, uninterested. He held her gaze, but she knew that there was nothing else. Tommy made up his mind about something; she just wished that it would turn out alright.Â
-
âIâd like to stroll around the garden today,â you told one of the servants. Life at home had been back to the way things were. Simon was back to the old Simon that you knew but somehow, you felt like your every move was watched.Â
âIâm sorry, miss but Mr. Coventry told us that you can only go to the garden with him,â she replied. âWe can call on Mr. Coventry to askâŚâ
âWhat-what do you mean?â you asked. âI thought I was allowed to goâŚâ
âMr. Coventry told us that you can only go out of the house with him and that, if he isnât around, youâre only allowed to be inside the house,â she repeated. You swallowed the constriction in your throat, unable to form any sentence. âWe were also instructed to be with you at every single moment, miss,âÂ
âWhat?â you asked, frowning. âI donât need to be tended to every minute of the day,â
âBut missââ
âYou may leave. Iâll go to the garden alone and you can just tell Simon that I insisted on it,â you told her, walking away but she grabs your arm. âI didnât tell you that you can touch me,â you spit. Youâll feel bad about it later but for now, you need to go out. The house was suffocating, and you felt like you were being watched.Â
âMissââ
âLeave me alone,â you scowled. âI want to go to the garden,â
âOh, darling but you canât,â Simon says, mocking you. âI told the servants to follow my orders. With the stunts that youâve been pulling lately, I think itâs just fine to have you close and protected, hm?â he asked, walking over to you.
âSimon, this isnât right,â you begged. âIâve been cooped in the house for too long. I need-I want to go out,â
âI wish you could, but I have to go attend a meeting with Alfie Solomons. Did you know that I had your old driver killed? Itâs all because of you,â he chuckles. He dismisses the servants with a wave of his hand. âYou have to understand that IâŚIâm doing it for our family. You can hate me,â he states, walking a step closer to you. âOr push me awayâŚâ he adds, a tendril of your hair swirling in his fingertips. âYou can even try to kill me,â he chuckles, his breath on your ear. âBut youâre still mine. Youâre my wife. Youâre my fucking wife!â
You shuddered, pushing him away.Â
âYouâre taking everything away from me, Simon,â
âIâm just taking back what I gave you,âÂ
âMyâŚmy freedom. You took away my freedom,â you cried. âYou took Johnny away from me! You took the Shelbyâs away from me,â
A slap echoes in the halls.Â
âDonât you dare fucking say that I took the Shelbys away from you. They were taking you away from me!â he roared, chest heaving. âWhatâyou didnât think I would feel magically alright when you visited Tommy Shelby the other day? You didnât think I wouldnât know about that fucking locket that you lied to me about? We were having a wedding and you still had Tommy Shelby on you! You think Iâd be happy about that? I love you and IâŚI gave you everything! But I still have to try to read your mind. Tommy doesnât. YouâŚyouâd rather live in the sewers with that fucking criminal than be here with me,â
He caresses the stinging on your cheek, wiping your tears away.
âWhat does he have that I donât?â
-
You were locked inside your bedroom, your heart aching. He loves youâŚbut he hurts you. Heâs cruel and controlling and full of wrath but heâs dependent and loving and kind. You hated to admit it, but you understood his fears, his anger, and him.Â
What if you stole one of the cars right now? You could drive down to Birmingham and stay there orâŚor you could leave, find a place to stay in Ireland and never be heard of again. Will Simon shoot down the car? Will he shoot you, too? Or will he forbid you to even set your foot in England ever again?Â
Simon enters your room, disregarding you completely before sitting on the bed with you.Â
âIâm sorry,â he says, his hand covering yours. âI didnât mean toâŚto do that,â
Right.Â
âSimonâŚâ
âIâm sorry, please,â he says, coming closer to you but you only feel cold and repulsed. âPlease, darling⌠I donât want to do these things to you. Do you think it doesnât hurt me when I have to take things away from you? I just canâtâŚnot until Iâm sure that I can trust you.â
You closed your eyes, tears falling on the hands that connected you to your husband.Â
âIâm so tired, Simon,â you whispered. âYouâŚyou taunt me and-and you turn my freedom into your weapon. I understand that youâre angry but to do thatâŚto do the things that your father did to your motherâŚwhen you told me before that you hated him for itâŚwhat does that make you?â you asked. The apple doesnât fall far from the treeâŚwas that supposed to be your excuse every time he does something horrible?
âIâIâŚâ
âI married you not because I know that you can give all these things to me. I married you because you told me you loved me. You told me that I was important to youâŚbut is this what love is? Is love supposed to be painful? Is love supposed to bruise? Is this what love is supposed to be like?â you asked. You removed your hand from his, standing up and walking away. If this is what love bruises you like peaches, you wanted no part of it.Â
Simon has given you the wings to fly but he likes to cut them whenever you fly too close to the sun.Â
When you lay in bed that night, Simonâs arm draped on your figure, you only felt cold. You laid on the softest bed in the world, unmovingâŚunblinking.Â
Maybe you'll be free another time.
-
âIâm sorry for what I did,â he says, setting his utensils down on the dining table. âYou haveâŚyou have every reason to be mad at me,âÂ
âSimon,â you sighed. Youâve been playing with your food for a while. âYouâŚyou canât just say sorry every time you decide toâŚhurt me. I want to be able to love you without fearing for my life,â
âItâs justâŚTommy Shelby.â
âI donât have him anymore,â you told him. âTommy and IâŚare nothing but childhood friends. His father used to frequent the brothel when my mother was still alive. Heâand I grew up together and he was all I had until he left. Now, I only have you,â you said. âMy relationship with the Shelbys is nothing but familial. They took care of me, they took me under their wing,âÂ
âBut he loves you,â he replied. âHe loves you, Y/N and he wants to take you away from me! Do you not appreciate my efforts to ensure that our marriage is preserved?â
âWhat preservation?â you asked, standing up. âWhatâwhat preservation? You killed Johnny and you expect me to be alright with it. You took away my friends, my freedomâŚand youâyou expect me to be the same!â You chuckled. âPreservation? Youâre the only one killing this marriage, Simon. I love you but no matter how much I show itâŚit will never be enough,âÂ
âThen, kill Tommy Shelby!â his voice booms. âYou want me to trust you? You want me to see your love? Kill him! We have more than enough money to have one of Alfieâs men or Sabiniâs men to kill him. Kill him!â
Your face pinches in anger, eyes turning into slits.Â
âWhat? You canât be serious,â you scoffed. Simon takes your arm harshly and you flinched. He grips it in his hand, forcing you to stay immobile.
âKill him,â he spits. âYour love means nothing to me if you wonât,â
âAnd you think Iâll continue to love you when youâre forcing me to kill my friend?â you asked, shaking your head. âLet me go!â
âNo!â his voice booms. He drags you to his office, your legs stumbling behind him. âYou have to decide if youâll kill for me. Iâll kill for you, donât you know that?â he asked, throwing you on the couch in his study. âIâll kill for youâŚâ
You stand up to leave but he pushes you down.Â
âI donât care if you donât love me right now. You will love me again. Youâve been obedient for Tommyâs sakeâŚthatâs the greatest love of all and IâI donât have it,â he whispers. âItâs all Iâve ever wanted and I donât have it.â He shakes his head, watching your husband turn into the cruel man that you learned to hate. He walks towards the door and exits. You run after him but he forces the door closed from the other side.Â
âMake sure that Mrs. Coventry is taken care of,â he tells his security. âOnly maids are allowed to be inside but donât let anyone near the door until I leave. She will remain in this room until I arrive in the evening.â
You were rattling the door but to no avail. Your tears were freely flowing, trying to get the door open by slamming your body on it. You could hear the quiet murmur outside but they were all ignoring you.
âLet me out, Simon!â you sobbed. âLet me out! Let me outâŚplease!â you cried, slamming your body harder but it couldnât fucking open. Your fall on the floor, consoling yourself from the coldness and the darkness of Simonâs office. If your mother saw you today, would she be proud of you?
-
Time passes in Tommyâs eyes, his eyes blank. Alfie Solomons told him to wait but he couldnât. Their men surrounded the mansion, pretending to be your security but theyâve been planning the seeds, telling Tommy that you werenât allowed to be out of the house with your husband anymore. He heard some of the men joke that you were a ghost that sat on the window because they have never even seen you.Â
âTommy,â Alfie called, a young man trailing after him. âIâve got someone useful for you. One of my men in Coventryâs fucking mansion. Go on, David. Tell Mr. Shelby here about the fucking horrors in that big, big mansion,â
David nods, his resolve dissolving upon seeing Tommyâs icy stare directed at him.Â
âMy name is David and Iâm assigned to the security of the house. Mrs. Coventry is currently locked in Mr. Coventryâs houseââ
âAh, fuck, mate. Just say Y/N and Simon. These fucking names reallyâŚâ Alfie interjected. He nods.Â
âUmâSimon laid a hand on Y/N yesterday,â his eyes looking away from Tommy. âSheâs not allowed to-to go out of Simonâs studyâŚafter Y/N refused to have Mr. Shelby killedâ
âWhat about the driver that brought her to me?â
âHeâs dead. Darby Sabiniâs men killed him,â Alfie shrugged. He dismisses David with a wave of his hand. âBe honest with me, Tommy. Who is she? Because itâs quite absurd, innit? Here is a man with a wife and then another man who vows to what? Take her back? If I was Simon CoventryâŚI would be mad too, is what Iâm saying. Did you know the tenth commandment, mate? Thou shall not covet thy neighborâs wifeâŚdid you know that?â
âNo one,â was Tommyâs laconic reply, standing up to walk away. Alfie chuckles.
âNo one!â he exclaimed, slamming his hand on the table. âThis no one cost me a man. A poor lad who decided to follow your Y/Nâs orders for what? A few pounds and a fuckingâa fucking night with you. Is that it, Tom? No one. Fucking no one and Iâm letting my men run around after your fucking whims!â
âA fucking night? My fucking whims?â Tommy spits.Â
âWhat? Is it not true?â he asked, âYouâre fuckingâŚobsessed, mate. Thatâs what you are! She is married. The more you act the more she getsâŚfucking hurt. You think thatâs alright?â
âHeâs using her!â Tommy shouts over. âHeâs hurting her no matter what I do or not do. Did you fucking know that? Youâre not doing anything!â he asked, eyes teary.Â
âThen, donât fucking do anything! It wouldnât matter anyway; you said it yourself. As damned as I am, Tommy, donât fucking do anything,âÂ
Tommy shoves Alfie, shaking his head. No fucking difference?Â
âWhat the fuck? Tommy!â Alfie shouts. âWhatâs the matter? Youâre fucking angry, eh?â
âYes, Iâm fucking angry!â he says, pointing a gun to Alfie.Â
âOh, youâre going to kill me?â he taunts. âYouâre going to fucking kill me when your anger is un-fucking-justified! So, what, Simon has your woman, eh? He has her? Youâre angry at me but fucking hell, Tommy! How many men do I have to sacrifice for this little fucking protection project you got going on? How many fathers will you fucking kill? You think youâre better than Simon Coventry? Youâre going straight to fucking hell, Tommy! Straight to fucking hell! Just like me and Simon! You come to me to get closer to Simon Coventry andâŚyou stand there, talking about not doing anything when itâs my men that have to go through the other end of the barrel. Kill me and pull that trigger for some fucking honorable reason. Like an honorable man and not likeânot like some fucking civilian that does not understand the wicked way of our world, mate,â he spits. Tommy stares at him blankly.Â
âLook, mateâTommy. I will fucking help you but you have to be fucking patient. The races at Sabiniâs tracks are happening soon. You just have to be patient.â
Tommy shoves Alfie away from him. He wouldnât understandâheâd never understand. Time was ticking and if he didnât move now, heâll get killed.
-
âI think it would be much better to wear the green,â Simon says, looking at the dress that you have on for the races. âWear it,â
âOh, but it would be such a waste,â you told him, twirling to show him the way the fabric draped beautifully on you. âDonât you think so? Besides, itâs going to be so hot at the races today. I donât want to sweat,â
Simon pinches his nose.
âI suppose so,â he agrees, striding over you and laying his hand on your waist. âYou do look ravishing, darling. I already canât wait to take you home, hm?â
âWe have to make sure our horse wins first,â you tell him, laying your head on his chest while you let his eyes rake over your body. âSimon, can-can you kiss me?âÂ
âWhy so sudden?â he asked, turning you around. âIs everything alright, darling?â
âOf course,â you smiled at him, studying his face. This was the Simon tha you loved; the kind Simon that you rarely see these days. âI just want you to kiss me, my love. Canât you kiss your darling wife?â He smiles a small smile, taking your chin with his gentle fingers and kissing you.Â
âI love you, Y/N,â
âI love you too, Simon.â you told him, pecking his lips once more before a knock breaks you away.Â
âLooks like weâre ready to go,â he tells you.Â
âOf course, you can go ahead. Let me just fix my hair and we can go,â you replied, turning away from him. He was so warmâŚso, so, so, warm. Simon leaves you with a kiss on your forehead. Youâve been good lately, no Tommy ShelbyâŚno requestsâŚno anything. You could tell that he loves it; that you were obedient but if you didnât want a repeat of what happened, you had to play your cards right. You fix your hair one last time and double-check the contents of your purse. It felt heavy, it felt right.Â
You had to get this right; you were living on borrowed time after all.Â
Your car stops at one of Darby Sabiniâs tracks in London. Simon requested privacy and privacy heâll get. No one knows that the Coventryâs are present in the race except for Alfie, Sabini, and the men who ushered you to the private room. No word was supposed to be out that you were both here. Simon forbade it. You let Simon walk in front of you with his hand clasped around yours. The room you were in had whisky, rum, and other items that you knew were not for the general public. When you arrived, a man with a hat was waiting.
âDarling, Iâd like for you to meet Alfie Solomons,â Simon tells you, removing his hand from yours to shake Alfie Solomonsâ hand. âHeâs been the one supplying us with security. Sabini will get here in a while, but I think that itâs better for you to meet Mr. Solomons first.âÂ
âGoodâŚday, Mrs. Coventry,â Alfie greets, a polite bow sent to your way.Â
âGood day, Mr. Solomons. Iâve heard so much about you from my husband,â you offered, smiling at him.Â
âGood things, I hope?â he asked. âWell, it doesnât matter anyway. Mr. Coventry, Darby Sabiniâs been looking for you. Something about your dealings. I donât really keep track, you know?â
âOf course,â Simon nods. He kisses your head. âWill it be alright to leave you with Mr. Solomons for the meantime, my love?â
âSure, darling,â you said, your hand tightening on the beaded purse in your hand. He smiles at you before leaving, looking for Darby Sabini. You watched the door close and you were about to sit down when Alfie Solomons spoke.
âYou know, love,â Alfie starts, walking to you closer. He stops right beside your ear. âIf you wanted to hide that gun better, youâd have to loosen your grip on your purse. I can see the outline of the barrel from where I was standing.â he says before leaving you in the room. âDarby Sabiniâs not here but he is somewhere by the racetracks,â he hints.
âWhat do you want?â you asked, following him. âWhy are you telling me this?â
âLetâs just say Iâm a friend of Tommy Shelby,â he nods to himself. Your blood runs cold, and your face turns pale. âGo,â he urges. âDo whatever you want,â
You exited the special room with haste. Blood was ringing in your ears and you couldnât breathe properly. You were stumbling with adrenaline, with hope, withâŚevery single emotion that you never thought you could feel and comprehend. Nobody else was in the corridors leading to the room marked with an unassuming planter box beside it. You cautiously entered and Simon turned around immediately. His face tenses with alarm when he sees you.Â
âDarling, what are you doing here? You should go back with Mr. Solomons before Darby Sabini sees you. I told our men to all leave so he and I could have some privacy,â he warns, eyes darting everywhere.
âHeâs notâŚheâs not here,â you tell him, unloading the gun from your purse with shaky hands.Â
âWhatâwhat is this about?â Simon asks, looking pointedly at the gun that Tommy gave you long ago. You werenât even sure if it was still working. You point the gun at him, straight to his face. âYouâre going to kill me? Is that it?â he asked, anger taking over his features. âYouâre going to kill me when Iâve given you everything! I gave you your fucking life, Y/N. Put that gun down and-and weâll pretend like this never happened,â
âNo! Youâyou took everything away from me, Simon. You took my family away. You took Johnny away from me and you stillâyou still expect me to love you? You took me away and weaponized my freedom. You thinkâyou think that I can still love you? I wake up every day counting to ten if youâd hit me. If youâd shove me down and slap me and kick me. This isnât love, Simon! This is prison,â you enraged, your gun shaking. âYou told me thatâŚyou told me that the only way out is if I kill you,â you heaved.Â
âY/NâŚyouâre being callous right now, love. Youâre not youâŚyouâre angry,â he tries, walking towards you but you just shook your head. âYouâre being stupid!â
âStop! Simon, stop!â you shouted, the volume of your voice raisins. âI can never be smart for you. Iâll always be a property in your eyes and Iâand Iâll never ever be your equal,â you sobbed. âThis is something that I need to do. You broke me,â you cried, tears falling in your eyes. âYou broke me, and you still expect me to love you,â
âI love you, Y/N,â he sobs. âI love youââ
The coiled spring that wrung your heart explodes.
A manicured hand pulls the trigger, and your husband falls to the ground along with the gun that you held. Your hands shake and you fall on the floor, wailing. Now that the job was done, who else would you have? You crawled towards him, your dress was getting dirty, but you didnât care. Who thought youâd finally use the gun that Tommy bought you for protection?Â
You lay your head down on his chest, there was no heartbeat. He was dead, Simon was dead. The trembling of your hands, hold what you could. The blood trails down your arm and you just lay there. He was dead. Simon was dead, you killed him. You killed Simon. You killed the man who loves you.Â
âThereâs no use crying over spilled milk,â a gruff voice that belonged to Alfie Solomons says behind you. âYouâre more capable than what Tommy painted you out to be,â
âWhere is he?â you asked. It was odd, you thought youâd be crying by now. âWhereâs Tommy?â
âSabiniâs men took him,â Alfie shrugged. âSimon ordered Sabini to kill Tommy today. You did well,â
âI killed my husband,â you told him. The waver in your voice couldnât be pinpointed to one single emotion. âI justâŚI just killed my husband,â
âI see that,â he replied. âThis wasnât Tommyâs plan really. He was supposed to kill Simon and I was supposed to guard you while this all happens butâŚI guess Simon was quite intelligent too,â he says, pushing Simonâs limp arm with his cane. âYouâre a good shot,â
âMr. Solomons, Iâll buy your silence for five thousand pounds. Iâll let your men take care of this scene for ten thousand more. Make sure that none of this is blamed on me or on Tommy,â you negotiated, pulling yourself away from your husband. You were still trembling and Alfie could see how hard you tried to supress yourself from revealing too much.
âYou just landed yourself millions. I donât think a few thousand more will be burdensome on your pockets?â he asked, looming over you. He extends his hand for you to take, and you do, hauling yourself to meet him at eye level. You swallowed.Â
âBlame this all on Darby Sabini,â you told him. You stand up straighter, looking him in the eye. âAnd Iâll make sure that the cash is ready for you after the funeral. Iâm sure youâd want very powerful friends on the inside?â
Alfie nods, a smirk forming on his face. Looks like you never needed Tommy in the first place.Â
The police found you wailing on the scene of the crime, the weapon nowhere to be found. Alfie Solomons testified that you were with him the whole time when one of his men ran to tell you that Sabiniâs men shot him in the head. He had someone testify on it too.The funeral was private and quick, you decided to bury him with his parents in the mausoleum with âCOVENTRYâ written in gold. Simon bequeathed every property to your name in his will. You were free; you were finally, finally, free.Â

BIRMINGHAM, 1922
After selling your mansion in London, you moved back to Birmingham. You bought a house that was big enough to have guests over but still not as massive as your mansion in London. You havenât talked to Shelbyâs in a year, even though they did lend a hand with what happened to Simon. Apparently, it was Polly who arranged a meeting between some Lizzie Stark and Sabini. Tommy and Alfie connived to kill Simon, but Sabiniâs men took Tommy away to some far away place before anything could happen. You couldnât face them yet, not with the freshness of your woundâŚnot with the guilt that clawed its way deep into you.Â
Youâve been with Simon for such a long time that you almost forgot what it was like to be yourself.Â
You looked at the garden outside your window, feeling nostalgic because this was the same garden where Tommy used to take you all those years ago. You were only kids back thenâŚhow time flies. Does he know thatnyou moved back to Birmingham? Is he giving you space?
You watched the rain fall from the French windows, appreciating the breeze and the calm that the pitter patter gave you. You looked on, a single figure walking towards your house and you smiled. For the first time since your life started, you were finally free.Â

Betrayal - Masterlist
Tommy Shelby x Reader x Luca Changretta

What started as a one shot from a prompt has now grown arms and legs, so Iâm making a master post to recognise it as a series in its own right.

Summary:
Tommy and Y/N have been together, in secret, for some time, after growing up together on the streets of Small Heath. Set after the end of s2 through into s4, Tommy was poised to have everything he ever wanted, until a colossal error of judgement comes back to haunt him and he finds himself on the wrong side of the woman he loves.
Warnings for whole story: đ This is very angsty piece and littered with bad language. It contains some smut and some very dark themes, including domestic violence and sexual assault. For that reason, I respectfully ask minors not to interact. All chapters have their own warnings so please do check these before reading.
Credit: There are scenes and dialogue lifted from series 3 and series 4 of Peaky Blinders used throughout this story. I take no credit for Steven Knightâs writing or characters. Everything else is my own and I do not give permission for it to be replicated without consent.
