Retelling The Hobbit Chapter 16: The Song of the Lonely Mountain First chapter / Previous / Next

*crumbles into dust after finishing this* Thank you for reading! This The Hobbit webcomic adaptation thing takes a lot of effort to put together and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate every comment. I also really appreciate the people who’ve spread the word of this comic to their friends! <3

And finally, we’re at the Song of the Lonely Mountain! Within Tolkien’s canon, The Hobbit is an in-universe book that was “written” by Bilbo Baggins, who occasionally lies/embellishes/exaggerates things. The tonal differences between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are explained by Bilbo and Frodo/Sam being different kinds of storytellers, with different relationships to “the truth.” This idea is the core of how I’m adapting the novel!  Bilbo is an unreliable narrator who is literally ‘drawing’ from his own limited experiences;  the different art styles reflect the different perspectives of other characters.   The “dwarf art style” in this chapter is inspired by stonework/metalwork in general— but especially by a mix of art deco, Celtic art, and European folk art. 

The central tension of the comic is between Bilbo and Thorin, who each have wildly different ideas about what kind of  story they’re in. Thorin is in a grand fantasy epic, while Bilbo is in a lighthearted children’s book adventure.  The tragedy is, obviously, that only one side of the story ever gets to be fully told.

On a sillier note, a few years ago I had my first gay crush on a lesbian who sang while playing the piano. This chapter is dedicated to the piano lesbian. I hope they’re doing well, wherever they are. XD

I think I might need a bit of a break but I’m hoping for the next chapter, titled “Dawn,” to arrive on January 13th. And your comments/support really do help motivate me to get more done! ^_^

It blows my mind that by giving the mithril shirt to Bilbo, Thorin indirectly saved Frodo and thus prevented the Ring-bearer from dying and the Quest from failing. The world was ultimately saved because the exiled King Under the Mountain fell in love with a hobbit.

rewatching lotr, and rewatched the hobbit trilogy like 2 weeks ago, and i must say. i love this franchise for all its “i knew a guy who knew a guy” relations. like to give just one example, gimli presumes for a second, like the whole fellowship, that frodo got injured by the cave troll in moria. but he’s actually just fine! because frodo just happens to be gimli’s dad’s boss’s situationship’s nephew, and therefore has the mithril shirt that gimli’s dad’s boss gave to his situationship right before gimli’s dad’s boss led the company to battle against, among others, legolas’s dad. legolas’s old situationship from like last year (60 years ago) was also there and chose, get this, gimli’s dad’s boss’s nephew over him. i love yall

Sam sends Danny to annoy Batman

So after graduation, Sam starts travelling around for her charities, non-profit organizations and protests, she gets well known as an activist and has made a name for herself

Danny on the other hand is juggling learning about his duties as ghost prince and in college for aerospace engineering

Both are in a long-distance relationship, both are very supportive of the other and are in healthy realationship

Sam gets a lead about Cadmus cloning and experimentation and decides to follow it while publicising it

Well Sam gets too close to the point the JL needs to intervein or else risk some confidential info getting to the public

They saw how she was about her activism and decide to send Batman to "deter" her

Now she's pissed

Danny never claimed to have a normal life or be an ordinary person

And in his life, there's not a lot of things that can make him worried

But his activist girlfriend calling him at 3:00 am asking him for a "no questions asked" favour involving BATMAN...yeah he's very concerned about what Sam got herself into

But he's not turning down an opportunity to mess with the government

Danny gets turned into a goose, and instead of trying to fix it, he goes to Gotham and plays the untitled goose game irl.

He makes objections and keeps them in a little backpack. He also sings honk honk revolution in his downtime.

Batman doesn't know how to deal with a rogue goose. No one does not even Damian. At some point, Joker tries to kill the goose, only to get his joy buzzer, flower squirter, and joke gun taken by the feathery menace.

Once I read a fic where (and I am not sorry for any trauma this may bring to you, your family, OR your cow) Jesus Christ, like the guy from the Bible, fucked the shit out of Jack Manifold right after he was murdered by Technoblade. In the remains of the community house(?) (might have the wrong name for the place, it's been a while since I consumed anything dsmp related). I laughed my ass off the entire time I read it and proceeded to traumatize multiple friends with it by copy/pasting it in group chats for days. ( @delis-4-meats I have no regrets, I will consider doing it again, you were a fool to remind me of this fic.)

The fear of telling someone, someone who you are supposed to trust and confide in, the truth because you know deep down they're not as trustworthy as the script made of them in your head. But because of them you know when you have a true loved one when the fear isn't present with them. When you can speak your mind without a single fear of being judged and attacked, even if they don't have the same opinion as you. And it's even better when they are truthful with you too, because of how your truth has been pushed away in a corner, you want to hear their truth as much as you want yours to be acknowledged.

So thank you, for giving me that fear. Because now that I have overcome it I have a better appreciation for the truth and I love the truth of others even if I don't agree with it or have the same truth.

Because of you I have found how to trust my truth.
