author's note: just saw the taylor movie and i'm back on my taylor kick, so of course i had to title something after my favorite song!!! also, dw, i am working on part two to 'i drove 100 miles an hour to forget you'. but please enjoy this while i work on that!

You glance at Max nervously as a projector beside you stirs. He isn’t looking at you, his full attention on gnawing at his lip and the projector screen just a few feet away. His hand anxiously fumbles for yours, and your hand easily slides into place with his. Behind you, is a group of people, most of whom call you or Max a close friend. Max lets out a deep breath as the screen brightens and the show starts.

The camera fades in, revealing a smiling Daniel Ricciardo. He’s sitting on a stool, hands on his knees, relaxed. He leans in as a muffled voice from behind the camera asks: “When did you first know Max was in love?”

The group behind you laughs comfortably, while Max squirms nervously. You glance at him again right before Daniel starts speaking. His cheeks are bright red, clearly embarrassed.

“Well,” Daniel laughs, “It’s a long story. Well, there’s two stories. Which one should I tell?” Daniel looks up thoughtfully.

The crowd behind you laughs and a few people shout, “Both!”.

“I guess I’ll tell both. I officially met Max around 2016, when he replaced my teammate at the time. I also met Y/N.” Daniel smiles, giddy. “I thought they were dating at the time, spoiler alert: They were not.”

“Max had won his first race and I remember seeing him in Parc Ferme. He was looking around at all the Red Bull people, searching for Y/N. When he saw her, he ran up to her and held her face. They both looked so happy, and I remember thinking “They are so in love, and they don’t even know it”.”

A few people behind you ‘aww’ at the statement and you squeeze Max’s hand, your eyes slightly tearing up. You had been in love with Max at the time, but Daniel was right. You hadn’t recognized the feeling at that point.

“The second time, they still weren’t dating. I just- I know love takes time, but Y/N and Max are those people who deserve to be in love. They’ve both gone through so much shit, that they just deserve to be happy.”

You look down, attempting to blink away the tears, but a few slip down your cheeks.

“Which is why, I was so frustrated when I learned they weren’t dating after this specific occasion. They just deserve each other so, so, so much.” Daniel’s grin grows wider. “It was the 2017 season, Austria, I think. Max had a first-lap collision and had to retire. I had walked into Max’s driver’s room to grab him for media.

They didn’t notice me but, Y/N had Max’s head in her lap, and her hands were in his hair. Max was just venting, and I could just see the love in Y/N’s eyes, and the reciprocation from Max’s.” Daniel sighs softly, “They were both struggling at the time and yet they still found the time to care for each other. It’s truly…amazing, I guess.”

You look back at Daniel who's in the front of the crowd. He gives you a cheesy smile and blows you a kiss that you catch in your free hand.

The camera fades in on a new person, Pierre Gasly. He smirks at the camera and adjusts in his seat slightly. Someone from behind the camera asks, “When did you first know Max was in love?”

“With Y/N?” The person must nod because Pierre hums, leaning slightly back in his seat.

“Well, I think it was when they first started dating, in 2019. I saw them on their second or third date. Max was well, ‘maxplaining’, as usual. Y/n looked so interested and captivated by whatever he was saying. And when she asked a question, I swear his eyes lit up.” Pierre lets out a little laugh, a smile on his face. “He looked so happy that she was interested, and he just kept rambling and rambling and I don’t think she ever lost interest.”

Another round of ‘awws from the crowd. Your hand squeezes Max’s, but his eyes can’t seem to focus on you. He seems strangely distant and nervous, a thought that sparks a worried fire in your stomach.

Alex Albon appears on the screen, adjusting the cap on his head. “I just look here?” His hand points to the camera, and someone must nod because he focuses his eyes there.

“When did you first know Max was in love?” Alex breaks into a smile, his hand rubbing at his jaw. “Well…it must’ve been after a DNF, I think. I can’t seem to remember which one, but Max was yelling at everyone, I swear. He was so angry. But then he just suddenly calmed down, and I followed his eyes to Y/N who was approaching him. She didn’t look angry or annoyed, she had a rather calm, maybe saddened look in her eye?

She took him by the hand and brought him to his driver’s room, and when he returned for media duties he was a completely different person,” Alex shrugs nonchalantly, “Y/N just has that effect on him, always making him happy or just calm. He’s never angry around her, it’s astounding.”

Sergio Perez pops up, sitting on the same stool as everyone else. The person behind the camera then asks the age-old question, “When did you first know Max was in love?”

“I think it was…Abu Dhabi, 2021. Max had won, and the first person he went to was Y/N.” Sergio shrugs, “I always knew he loved Y/N but that day, it was so painstakingly obvious. I thought he was going to propose, to be honest.”

The screen fades to black before the words, “Y/N, will you marry me?” pop up on the screen in white text.

At that point, it seems like everyone’s holding their breath. Camera flashes focus on you, and you turn to Max. He’s so out of character, hands shaking slightly as he holds the black ring box. Your eyes water for the umpteenth time tonight. You nod as tears make their way down your cheeks. Max closes the ring box, tossing it aside before cupping your cheeks, just like the day of his first win. But this time, he doesn’t hold back. His lips clash with yours as your friends cheer, and you laugh into the kiss. Max can’t seem to pull away, but when you do he whispers, out of breath: “I love you.”
