Vampire Couple Milestones - Sharing a Coffin
Imagine that Missi and Duke finally get along with each other and the two start sharing a coffin together. As nice as beds are, there’s nothing that feels more secure than a coffin to a vampire - even a newly made vampire.
A coffin was at once the last and first place Missi expected to find Duke.
Since she had resurrected him and thrown him out of his castle, she still caught him lurking on the grounds and sneaking back into the castle on more than one occasion. But where was he if not trying to steal his cane back from her.
And so she had searched high and low for him until she discovered him in the dungeons. His coffin was long and grand with gold embellishments on the dark wood. An ominous dragon carving stared up above. She opened the coffin lid and saw him lying with his arms crossed over his chest, ready for a final burial.
She seated herself next to his coffee, studying every part of him. The pale white skin that was like snow, the large nose that took up half of his face, the long neck that was covered… He appeared more dead than sleeping. He was rarely seen without his hat and cape, and this was one of those rare occasions. His chest was broad and unmoving, due to a non-beating heart.
Missi was torn between leaving him to have a proper rest or driving a stake through his chest so he could have his final proper rest.
“Are you plotting my death?” he asked, one red eye was open and watching her.
“Yes.” She confessed. Both red eyes were open.
His frown deepened, “That’s not something you should joke about around a vampire in a coffin.”
“Who said I was joking?” she hissed.
He recoiled as if her words physically struck him. He rolled in his coffin so that he was lying on his side, a small space was left between him and her. His hand gripped the edge of the coffin and she thought he was going to slam it shut in her face. Instead, he surprised her by asking, “Do you want to come in?”
A myriad of tortuous things went through her head: she could kick his face in and stomp on his coffin, or she could set it on fire with him inside, or she could chain him up and anchor him to the bottom of the sea, or - She could go into the coffin. The thought of another body close to her, even if it was a bastard vampire, tempted her after so many months of loneliness and isolation in the castle. Somehow the coffin’s boxed in walls appeared cozy and homely compared to even the finest feather beds upstairs.
She stood up and relished in the look of disappointment and hurt on his face, then shock took over his expressions as her dainty foot stepped into the coffin. In spite of his height, he was thin; almost too small and frail. He shuffled back until there was an audible tap of him hitting the coffin wall. She had enough space that she could lie on her back, his arm was her pillow. Once she made herself comfortable, she nodded her head so that he could pull the coffin lid closed.
Before when she was human, Missi was frightened of small spaces like these, spaces that were like prisons to her and immobilized her. Now spaces like these felt safe to her. She turned her head towards Duke. He had his eyes closed but she could see how stiff he was.
“Duke?” she asked.
“Yes, dear?”
“Don’t call me ‘dear’.”
“Yes, Missi?”
She felt the tip of his nose brush her forehead, his breath scentless but warm in front of her face. “Why are you sleeping during the night?” she asked.
“I wasn’t sleeping.” he explained, “I was just gathering my thoughts. Someone can get tired of being thrown through brick walls…”
The old Missi would have apologized, the new Missi shrugged.
“Why did you come in?” he inquired of her.
She shrugged again. “Someone can get tired of plotting someone else’s demise.”
“I mean it.” he demanded. “Why are you in my coffin with me? Wouldn’t you rather be in my bed?”
His eye brows waggled at her and she punched him in his gut. He let out a low groan as his hand cradled his stomach. His hand moved awkwardly over her, looking for someplace to settle.
She grabbed his hand, fascinated by how long and bony it was. His bones and tendons rolled under her grip.
“What? Am I hurting you?” she accused him after hearing a small whimper from him.
“No, you’re not.” She tightened her grip on his hand, rolling his hand in hers harder.
Still he did not complain of the pain though she saw him bite his lips to stifle noise. Was he so desperate for physical touch that he would endure pain? Then again, was she so desperate for companionship that she literally crawled into the same coffin as him? She loosened her hold and relaxed. It was exhausting to think up ways to be cruel to him.
“Tell me what was it like being dead.”
“Where do I even start?” she could hear the smile in his voice. “I had a dozen zombie skeletons to walk me to my throne and a seven headed hydra living in my swimming pool!”
“Sounds like you had a good time being dead… Should I send you back?” she murmured, feeling dizzy at the closeness and the soothing rubbing of his thumb over her hand.
“Well… not now… I would say this is better than being dead for the moment.”
Examples of Stockholm Syndrome in Disney
Frollo and Quasimodo
Mother Gothel and Rapunzel
Frollo and Mother Gothel convince Quasimodo and Rapunzel that their lives are dependent on them. The two villains claim the outside world is a terrible place even though they know this is not true. They also constantly emotionally abuse their victims by implying their worthlessness and destroying their self-esteems. Quasimodo and Rapunzel sympathize with their captors and even believe their captors are protecting them and treating them with kindness. However, both captors are merely using and manipulating their victims for their own selfish purposes.
NOT:
The Beast and Belle
Belle does not sympathize with the Beast when she is treated poorly. She becomes angry and leaves the castle, only returning by her own wish so that the Beast (who saves her) does not freeze to death. She does not respond nicely towards the Beast until he treats her with respect. In this situation, Belle has control and is not manipulated into feeling for the Beast, nor does the Beast treat her disrespectfully after the first night. While the Beast does have an underlying motive as to keeping Belle in his castle, he abandons this idea and sets her free to make her happy. If anything, this story is a case of Lima Syndrome where the captor starts to sympathize with the victim.
Check out this post which refocuses the purpose of Beauty and the Beast from merely (and wrongly) being about Stockholm Syndrome to it’s original purpose.
