Top Chapter 1 “Hello,” a young woman answered at the door. “Hi, is Arturo there? We’re supposed to meet up,” a much different young woman replied on the other side. “Uhh, no, he’s getting a wax, I think. Do you want to wait here?” Nala cringed inside. “Sure, ok.” Nala walked into the entry hall, and the young woman, who Nala recognized to be Arturo’s sister, gestured for her to take a seat on the mudbench by the stairs. Arturo’s sister leaves Nala to wait. After about ten minutes, Nala gets up and leaves. In her car, she checks her phone. There’s a message from Simba. “Yeah, actually, could you give me a ride to Wal-Mart?” Weird, Nala thought. She would have missed him. “Yeah, np.” “Cool, I’m at my dad’s.” Nala drives to Simba’s dad’s place and texts him after sidling up to the curb in her 2008 Ford Escape. A few minutes later, Simba is pulling at the passenger door, wearing his big green coat. He sits down. “Hey,” they say. He puts his backpack at his feet and pulls out a piece of notebook paper with a list on it. Nala glances over. It’s a list of all the things to make DMT. “This is a list of all the things I need to make DMT,” Simba says, “I want to check the prices of some things at Wal-Mart.” Nala drives him there, and she follows him around the store as he writes down prices on his list. The whole time, she tried to find the right opportunity and the right way to say that she wished he would move with her. It never came out. She cannot remember what happened after they left Wal-Mart. By the time Nala was driving back up to Simba’s dad’s, it was dark outside. “So, Tucson?” Simba asked. “Yeah,” Nala replied. Simba grabbed his backpack and got out. As Nala sat there a moment, letting it sink in, her back to Simba as he walked away from her, a shooting star streamed across the sky, dead center in the screen of her front windshield. Woah, she thought. She looked down in the console for her lighter. It was gone. Simba must have snatched it. Her drive was too long, and no penny to her name. She texted Simba, “Did you take my lighter?” A moment later, “Oh yeah hold on.” A moment later, he was back at her door, opening the passenger side, and handing the lighter to her. “Bye.” “Bye.” Chapter 2 A few hours before Nala was destined to move from Texas to Arizona, her hope edged towards that possibility that Simba would join her last minute, and they’d live happily ever after, forgetting the ridiculous break-up a couple months prior. Her car was packed, and she was leaving that night, to drive all night and arrive by midday. She said her goodbyes. She wove the neighborhood streets until she approached the highway. To the left was Tucson, but if she went right, she could see Simba one more time. She’d already driven so many miles to see him so many times while he was in prison. Why bother anymore, she wondered. She turned left. Not long after that, she sent a message to Simba, “I’m on my way to Tucson.” Some hour later, Simba replied, “Fuck you, you fucking bitch. Don’t contact me anymore.” Chapter 3 Nala drove west all night with the sun chasing her around the time she arrived in Arizona. Plain desert passed until palm trees greeted her in Tucson.
