Im Developing A Habit Of Memorizing Different Lighting On Environments, I Started Doing This 2 Years

I’m developing a habit of memorizing different lighting on environments, I started doing this 2 years ago, to fill my mind’s library with possible compositional and lighting ideas. Usually I do it when I’m walking alone, where I can randomly stop and stare at something like a lost child for a long time; my eyes rolling around fast trying to capture everything. I then go home to sketch it down and try to paint what I saw from memory. I secretly think of this as my training if I were a shonen manga character.

art tips post

for all the artist following me

Have two sketchbooks: One for finished and high-quality art (stuff made with Prismacolor or Copic if you use that or art for your portfolio) and the other sketchbook for more messy doodles. This way you have a place to try new things and mess up as much as you need. When I only had one sketchbook I was scared to draw in it because I didn't want to mess it up

Do studies. I cant tell you how much I've improved just by doing studies of shoes, hands, noses, and all that. This works for when you have art block too since you’re not really making stuff up and just learning how real things work.

Learn from others. I’ve never taken a real art class because 1. I can’t afford it and 2. there’s no good art classes/programs at my school. I’ve been following several artists and learning from them over the years and they’ve helped me tremendously. Just please do not steal art because that is never okay.

Break down concepts. If you notice there’s something wrong with your piece then figure out why. You can’t get better if you leave mistakes and don't try to understand whats going on. If the color is weird figure out if the values look right or maybe its the saturation of the color.

Watch youtube tutorials. Here are some youtubers I think are pretty good art teaching all things art: Draw with Jazza |  DrawingWiffWaffles |  Proko |  Baylee Jae

Have an inspiration folder/blog. Sometimes you just need a collection of starry nights or a misty forest or even a French bakery. All of those things can help you get inspired to draw. It could even be completely unrelated to what you plan to draw.

There are no dumb ideas in the creative process. If you want to draw a lizard in a dress go for it! If you want to draw various pastries with faces do it! Don’t let the thought of it being too dumb stop you because if I’ve learned anything in my several years of drawing it’s that an idea can lead to another and another and another and you may get a really good idea just from doodling dumb things.

Here’s a few things that can get you started on drawing better:

Dynamic poses | Dynamic clothes | Dynamic figure drawing

COMPOSITION | PERSPECTIVE | CONSTRUCTION

Anatomy:

Legs

Arms

Hands

Heads

Body (Female) (Male

Color Theory

Improving your sketchbook

Most importantly, don’t give up! You may not immediately get notes or followers but it’s more important you get better than to have popularity. How do you think those popular artists got to where they are now? To be good you’ve got to work at it.

art tips post

for all the artists following me

draw fast. it’ll look messy for a long time but you’ll improve faster than if you spend 4 hours on every drawing

if you draw in pencil and have a habit of erasing all of your mistakes, try drawing in pen or marker. i know it’s scary but it’ll help in the long run (i’m speaking from experience)

try different methods and mediums but don’t worry about mastering any of them, just have fun

if you’re not rich, buy art supplies from the dollar store, not the art store (seriously. i go through a sketchbook about once a month and i’d rather spend $4 on one than $15)

there’s no wrong way to learn. you can copy other people’s art if you want to, just don’t post it

DO NOT worry about having a consistent style. do not. just draw however you want

if you want to make original characters then do it. don’t worry about if they’re original, or a good design, or if they have an accompanying story. make sonic ocs. do it. it’s fun and it’s not hurting anyone

try not to kill your back. stand up and stretch once in a while

make a folder and save all of your favorite arts for inspiration

draw from life. draw your dog. draw your teachers. draw your desk. draw your own hands (seriously that’s the best way to get better at drawing hands)

in general, drawing from life or a photo is better than drawing from a diagram

draw whatever you want. draw youtubers if you like youtubers. draw undertale if you like undertale. when i was a kid i drew nothing but shadow the hedgehog and horses. everyone deserves to draw what they want without being mocked, and if people start making fun of you, block them and keep drawing

don’t expect to get any notes at first. don’t let it discourage you. if you want validation go show your art to your mom or your friends or your teacher or your grandma

take breaks, but don’t give up.

Hey there! I want to start off by telling you that you are one of my all time favorite artists! You put in so much effort, passion, and time into your work and it shows! With your experience, I was curious on how you maintain your health? Do you ever get drawing injuries? I feel like I'm being held so far back by my own recurring tendonitis, even to the point of avoiding drawing because I'm afraid of reinjury. Is this the norm for a lot of artists? Hope you're having a great holiday!

ART INJURY is such an important topic, thank you for bringing it up!

I’ve had almost every art-related injury imaginable by this point, I’ll mention what caused them, how I treat them, and how I prevent them.

I first developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) a little over 5 years ago and its been a haunt of mine ever since. It initially developed from overwork–I binged through a comic I was drawing in a matter of days, drawing for hours without break. CTS is painful as hell: my thumb hurt, my fingers hurt, my entire hand felt constantly tingly/numb. I let it get so bad that my fingers grew stiff and unresponsive. I was in college at the time, so I was constantly writing/typing. I wore a typical wrist brace (one that didn’t really do anything for my CTS) most of the time because I didn’t know what else to do. I tried sleeping in it occasionally (bad, most braces aren’t meant for sleeping in–your hand heats and swells in it in your sleep and cuts off circulation). I was in horrible pain all the time, most nights I fell asleep curled in the fetal position, just wishing the pain away (something I’ve heard echoed by other people with severe CTS that I’ve met). I couldn’t draw. I was constantly in pain even when I wasn’t using my hand. I grew depressed. That went on for about 6+ months with no change and I believe that experience may be what left me with the permanent nerve damage in my hand. Though it’s uncommon now, sometimes I’ll be working and my fine motor skills in my hand will fade for 30mins to an hour. A couple times this happened while I was in my office and I got a visual representation of it in my work notes:

image

I’m not a doctor, I can’t break down exactly what caused this. What I do know I’ve done a lot of damage to my hand over the years. What finally changed and ended the terribly era of my first CTS encounter was that I began using this CTS treatment brace. I’m a skeptic and I definitely would not have bothered buying something that looks that dinky on my own, but one of my illustrator friends recommended it to me. Wow. It was like night and day. The first thing I noticed after a week using it was that the chronic pain that had become part of my routine for months was almost completely GONE. I’ve recommended it to artists and non-artists alike who suffer with CTS and it has worked for them as well–reading the Amazon comments provides good for tips on how to wear it.

My CTS was under control after that and to this day I wear the treatment brace any time I’m working on art.

Then I started developing tendonitis in the tendon on the outer edge of my wrist. Can’t catch a break, right? Icing and heating tendonitis is annoying, so I began using this ice/heat wrap whenever my tendonitis would flare up. It’s bulky and awkward, but I’ve found it really tames my tendonitis symptoms and is soothing to wear when I’m not working, like before bed (don’t sleep in it).

I’ve been pretty good about taking care of my wrist after all this. Wearing my treatment brace. Taking breaks to do preventative stretches. But I guess I’m not as smart as I think I am. Remember how my CTS flared up the first time? Apparently I needed to learn that lesson one more time for it to stick. I did the same thing: I had a comic I was really fired up about and I hashed through sketching the entire thing in a span of 2-3 days, working hours with few, if any, breaks. It devastated my wrist. The pain was worse than my first CTS experience. And unlike CTS, no amount of icing/heating or treatment braces would work. I went a month without creating art, going even so far as to not use my hand for even the most menial tasks like brushing my teeth or opening jars. My hand was so weak, I could barely grip a doorknob. But no amount of not using it seemed to have any effect. The first doctor told me it was probably a cyst and would require surgical removal. The specialist I was transferred took x-rays and an MRI–no cyst (thank goodness). The inside of my wrist was packed tight with so much inflammation that my body couldn’t seem to handle it on its own. I was prescribed an anti-inflammatory typically given to those who suffer from severe arthritis and that finally brought my hand and wrist back to normal.

Now I’m much more serious about prevention. I set a timer to take a break every 20-30 minutes and stretch my wrist, give it a rest. I break up my day so that I’m never working for more than 3-4 hours at a time. I continue to use my treatment brace any time I work. I also push myself to be more ambidextrous now. I use my left hand routinely for things I would have used my right hand for in the past. Brushing my teeth, pouring coffee, opening doors, writing notes to myself. Of course that’s a bit of an extreme lifestyle switch, but my encounters with art-related injuries have also been extreme.

All of these injuries were caused by my own choices. I didn’t take precautions, pushed myself too hard, and suffered the consequences. The best way to avoid these injuries is to take care of your hand in the first place. When I sketch, I try to hold my pencil using the underhand method and draw with my shoulder, rather than using a writing grip and drawing from my wrist. If you’ve had run-ins with CTS before, consider a treatment brace. Heat and ice tendonitis as its symptoms begin to arise. Take breaks. Stretch stretch stretch.

I’m sorry tendonitis is plaguing you! That really just sucks. Hopefully some of this is helpful. I can’t speak for other artists, so I don’t know if it’s the norm per say–but it’s definitely something anyone who using small, tight wrist motions for their work is susceptible to. All you can really do is alleviate your sources of strain as much as you can and try to avoid damage in the first place.

I Drew A Quick Chart About Good Wrist And Finger Exercise Before Playing Splatoon (or Engaging In Any

I drew a quick chart about good wrist and finger exercise before playing Splatoon (or engaging in any other intense activity such as but not limited to gaming in general, programming, drawing, computer work etc.) As with all stretching exercise, these should only be done in moderate speed. You only want to loosen up, not break your hands!! … and it kinda exploded on twitter haha

A Funny Thing About Introducing A New Queen Into A Hive That Has Lost Its Queen (or One That Youve Killed

A funny thing about introducing a new queen into a hive that has lost its queen (or one that you’ve killed because her brood was too fighty).

You have to introduce the new queen into the hive with these special queen cages that are stopped up with candy, and are open enough to let the hive smell the new queen, but not open enough that they can get in there and kill her.

Because they will kill her.

When you first put the new queen in she smells like an intruder, but by the time it takes the bees to eat through the candy and free the queen, the queen’s pheromones will have had time to work and the hive will have gotten used to her.

From the outside this kinda seems like:

“Yeh, we were all going to murder you to death before, but we’re full of candy now, so we’re cool. Oh yeh, and how about you be the new queen and stuff. Yeh, that’s cool too.”
