“I need you”

Ya know, I was thinking, and bear with me because this is the first meta-resemblant anything I’ve ever written before and someone has probably already covered this, but I think an “I need you” coming from Dean means a lot more than it may seem. I mean there’s the obvious definition of it, and that in itself is sweet, but I also think that to Dean, it’s more powerful than an “I love you”.
As we all know, Dean Winchester is the king of abandonment issues. The thing he fears most is being alone, or in other terms, that no one needs him. He fears that the people he loves most, the people he needs most, will leave him. At the root of his abandonment issues lies a need to be needed.
And yeah, no big surprise there. Dean wants to be needed. That’s old news.

But because of his fear of abandonment, Dean projects some of his longing to feel needed onto the ones he loves. Aside from genuinely needing these people, he wants them to feel needed. Because to him, feeling needed is something he wishes for, and even if he doesn’t feel needed all the time, the least he can do is make sure his family feels needed.
Taking care of Sam, protecting him, being there for him, it makes him feel needed. He isn’t shy in saying he needs his little brother.

He doesn’t want Sam to feel like he does. Hell, his entire life has been about making sure Sam doesn’t feel useless, abandoned, neglected. Of course, because of Dean, Sam has never felt any of these things, and therefore Dean’s attatchment to him comes off as selfish (and it often is, but I also think there are more layers to that than just that). But Dean’s simple purpose is to ensure others feel needed.
And now we come to Cas. Dean isn’t shy of voicing how much he needs Cas, but these words take on a different meaning for him. Cas, as often as he may leave, always comes back, for Dean. Dean has pushed him away in the past, they’ve both done their share of fuck ups, but one thing is blatantly clear; they need each other.

But Dean’s “I need you"s aren’t understood correctly by Cas. To Cas, Dean voicing his "I need you"s are twisted and obscured (often by other people, Angels, those who want to get under his skin) into Cas being a tool for the Winchesters. When Cas hears he’s needed, he begins to feel that he is only useful to the Winchesters, rather than loved. When he loses his wings, his mojo, all the times he’s been down in the dumps, it’s because he’s stopped feeling useful. Usually, it launches him into a depression, because if he can’t be useful to the Winchesters, he no longer feels he has a purpose. But Dean’s "I need you"s are trying to accomplish the complete opposite of making Cas feel like a tool. Dean is trying to show Cas that he family, and that they’re not going to leave Cas. That he’s needed outside of his powers, grace and might. He’s needed by the Winchesters as their friend, confidant, family. It’s not what Cas can do for them, it’s what they don’t want to be without him. The Winchesters have used their friends time and time again over the years, but Cas has earned his place above all that.
When Dean says "I need you” to Cas, it’s to remind Cas that he’s valued, he’s important, he’s their family. He’s Dean’s family, and he’s more than that. When Dean thinks that Cas feels abandoned, or anything less than family, he’s quick to remind him that he needs Cas; but in what way- that’s lost in translation.

Bottom line is that it was never Dean’s intention for he himself to feel needed, however much he may want to, but to instead ensure that the people he loves know they are important to him, and that they should never dare think any less.
