local starship captain could have literally anyone in the galaxy, flirts with melodramatic vulcan geek instead
Your relationships will be richer if you also allow people to love you the way that they love, and not only in the way that you're used to perceiving love. You'll miss out on a lot if you're only looking for it in the same places you're used to giving it.
I love by problem solving, remembering small things that people like and make them happy--like little notes in the margins of our relationships, a silent squeeze on the arm to reach out and connect.
I have a friend who loves by asking if she can send me a recipe for Japanese egg and rice when she knows I'm having a bad time. I have a (cishet) friend who loves by messaging to tell me he's just finished reading He/She/They by Schuyler Bailar. I have a friend who loves by telling me "I love you" openly and as often as possible. Some love by telling you things they won't tell to another living person, some love by going six months without talking but answer in five minutes when you message them at work, and some love by not knowing how to show their love, but never leave you out in the cold when you ask for somewhere to go and a warm fire.
"Love languages" are largely bunk and were made up by a misogynist, but I can tell you that people do love differently and that it matters to learn how.
14 & 16 :)
Based on this OC ask meme.
14. How does your OC want to be seen by other characters?
Lee is tough, standoffish, avoids attention and responsibility. She just wants to fade to the background, grumbling shit like âletâs get this over with.â đ
Sheâs going for an idgaf energy, but⊠such a FAKE idgafâer! She can't keep it up. She really wants to keep people at armâs length and (spoiler alert) itâs not working.
At the start of the story, Lee has kind of made Lone Wolf her whole personality. Thinks itâs easier that way. Safer. (Itâs not.) She pushed away her most important person, which sucks even if she thought it was necessary at the time, but she told herself her former friend/love interest would be better off if she never thought about Lee again. A clean break. Riiiight.
At the same time it really pains her that her friend/love interest now thinks she never cared at all. Leeâs fake idgafâer is showing here fr but she can't help but want to fix it.
Oh, and re the main antagonist, Lee wants to be invisible at first and later wants to be recognized as a legitimate opponent/threat... and unfortunately neither is true. đŹ
16. What is your OC's pain tolerance like?
Ahem. Really, really high.
Itâs also a core feature of the story that she faked her way through testing for a sentinelâs heightened senses by enduring a trial that was basically torture. đ In a sensory nightmare kind of way. To âfailâ the test and avoid being enlisted, she has to suffer through it without reaching out for help/dropping her mental shield⊠all while knowing that a trusted person who can help her is right there, waiting to intervene and save her from it. Ugh.
Guess I'd also say it's more an ongoing thing than just that... Lee is no stranger to pushing through a great deal of discomfort and pain, day in and day out, just to exist in a world where she is forced to hide her super-sensory abilities and perform like everything is fine. (Been thinking a lot about both ND masking and living with chronic pain when developing this character.)
Whew. Thanks for asking, anon!
11!

11. What is your OC's weapon of choice? Have they ever actually used it?
Lee doesnât have a sidearm or anything but thatâs not to say she isnât dangerous. đ
In this âverse, sheâs a sensitive (rare human mutation lending superior senses, among other things⊠think sentinel AU, though mineâs got my own lore). At the start of the story sheâs been raised to believe certain things about her abilities and despises using them even when she feels she has to. Also sheâs in hiding so she canât explore a lot and definitely hasnât pushed her abilities before. The lightning-fast reflexes come in handy though, as a pilot, in a fistfight, in a rescueâŠ
Lee doesnât even know what her greatest âweaponâ is yet, an altered state that connects her mind with others like her in a sort of network. As she learns what she can do, sheâs gonna have to wrestle with whether or not itâs possible to use this power for good.
Thanks for asking!!
Let's try this...
Ask me about my OC, Lee! MC of a dystopian sci fi novel I'm working on, with a second chance sapphic romance ;) I will answer replies or anons, whatever you like.
