1k • teen • satosugu • part 5: May

He can’t recall what started it, what thread of conversation they were following the moment before— only how Satoru brings it all to a sudden halt. “There’s so much to see while I still can.” Suguru trips over his own two feet. “Hey, careful Sugu—” “What did you say?” “Huh?” Satoru doesn't get it. He acts like it’s nothing. It’s not nothing. Suguru feels a hot bolt of irritation, maybe panic. He’s unsure exactly which but it’s a heady cocktail either way.

It’s just an offhand comment, a little-known fact about Satoru’s cursed technique: Six Eyes will burn out his optic nerve. He'll go blind eventually. And he has just... accepted that?

(Set in May 2006, 3 months before the Star Plasma Vessel incident. Series part 5 of 12.)

HAPPY MER MAY to tdbkdk specifically 🧜🏻

Lure

40k • mature + • tdbkdk ot3

Deku’s got a secret mer boyfriend. Not so secret anymore— not when he needs Kacchan’s help to sail away with his pretty fish boy before summer's end. Katsuki isn't exactly on board with that. And the closer he gets to figuring out why, the harder it is to imagine letting them go.

Coastal town mermaid AU recently completed for MerMay! Featuring fisherman's son Katsuki, childhood friend Izuku, & siren Shouto.

The cover image to my new comic, The Things we Carve. The character is sitting on a pink tiled ground, looking off in the distance while surrounded by branches and swirling roots. Wearing a yellow tunic and dark magenta pants, their legs look like they’re being slowly carved out from a branch.
Ropes and brooms hang from above, light casting down on them. Character and broomsquire, Frederick, in their workshop, carving away at a stick.
Six panels of Frederick meticulously working at this stick, pulling out a draw knife for cutting longer strips, and a carving knife for tighter curves.
Frederick looks at their new broom handle and sighs, placing it down.
Frederick: It's missing something, but what...
The front door of his workshop opens and the bells attached to the door DINGs. A person with a straw hat walks in.
Frederick: Oh, Leonard. Welcome.
Leonard: Thanks.
Leonard, hangs his straw hat up on the wall: How's it going today? Finished up a broom handle, I see.
Frederick: I cut a branch from out back this morning and whittled the twists at the top. It needs a lacquer, but I’m taking a moment before continuing.
Leonard picks up the handle and says: This is masterful work, Frederick. The notches are even sanded. Which luxurious wizard is it for? Lawrence? Alistair?
Frederick: ...Me.
Leonard: Are you... happy with it?
Frederick: No.
Leonard: I think this is one of your finest works. It fits your love for simplicity and also has space to carry tools.
Frederick: That’s the thing. There’s nothing else special about it. It has my signature look, but it doesn’t resonate with me.
None of the previous tries did either. I know they’d make fine brooms, and that I could ride them with no trouble. I have that much confidence in my abilities, at least.
Frederick holds the handle they made, in front of a bunch of other brooms they had created floating behind them in a picture frame: No matter how hard I try, they feel incredibly… impersonal.
I’ve made so many brooms for clients over the years that making something for myself is asking for the impossible.
Here’s freedom. Limitless possibilities. But no direction. It’s daunting to make something with no boundaries, because... what if I mess up? What if I make a fool of myself and my craft?
Leonard: There will be no one to tell you that your work is bad.
Frederick: But who will tell me that it’s GOOD?
Leonard blankly stares at Frederick.
Frederick: besides you, of course.
Leonard: You need to trust in your friends
Leonard holds Frederick's shoulder: And yourself.
Leonard holds Frederick's hand: What you make is beautiful, but craftsmen like us will only ever see the flaws.
Leonard pulls the broom handle away: Have you given new materials a thought?
Frederick quietly looks down: I have but it doesn’t feel like me if I don’t do it in the wood I’m familiar with.
Leonard thinks for a moment, then walks over to the workbench, taking off his bag: Come here…
Leonard rolls out his bag and reveals to Frederick his handmade pens all tucked into small pockets.
Leonard hands Frederick a pen: For you.
Frederick: This is gorgeous… the material you’ve mixed. It’s inspiring.
Leonard: It reminded me of you, so I did my best to model it after one of your whittling knives.
Frederick: That’s so thoughtful…
Leonard: And despite it having resin and wood layering, I thought this better represented how I saw you.
Frederick blushes covering his mouth and staring intensely at it.
Leonard scratches the back of his head, standing in front of a frame full of different pens he's made: Working through it can be effective, but sometimes a little perspective can give you the boost you need. Although you'll be trying new materials and crafts, the final product will always be unequivocally you.
Frederick looks over at their pile of broomsticks in a bin: Can you… teach me how to do this?
Leonard: Oh, it would be my pleasure.
Frederick: Th-Thank you...
Leonard and Frederick work together in a short montage, fusing resin into the cracks of a new broom stick.
Frederick weaves the broomcorn and cuts off the ends.
Leonard is lounging on some boxes, turning his head from his book, as Frederick says: It's done.
Frederick shows off the new resin-fused broom.
Leonard: I’ve never seen someone make a fused broom quite like this before. Are you sure you don’t want to take up pen turning while you’re at it?
Frederick: Ha, no. Your lethe scares me.
Leonard leans close: Fair enough. Why don't you give it a ride?
Frederick blushes: Oh, I don't know.
Leonard: Well, go on then!
Frederick shuffles the broom under themselves, readying.
Frederick begins to hover.
Leonard watches Frederick: How do you feel about this one?
Frederick: I'm not sure...
Frederick pauses: It’s still not quite right. There is still some residue left from the resin that I didn't sand down. I might have to redo the lacquer...
But you know...
Frederick hovers closer: I like it.
Frederick kisses Leonard while hovering on the broom: It’ll remind me of our time spent together.
