 Summary: Wars are fought at many places at once – at the war front, at secret quests, within your home and inside your heart. Author’s note: This is a story close to my heart. I am not Korean so I have had to translate a lot of names using google. I will put in a glossary for reference. I humbly request everyone to give it a read and send me your reviews. I know that the only way I am going to improve is with feedback so kindly, don’t hold back. This is my first and precious attempt.

Chapter 1

Eyes narrowing with focus, I tried to ease my breathing as I let the energy flow along my outstretched palms maintaining the 12 feet long tornado cycling above my head. I was not alone in my task though. I looked around at Taehyung, Jimin and Jungkook – the four of us standing facing each other palms turned outwards as we kept the wind swirling above our heads in a column. I felt the wind pick up speed and looked at Jungkook. His face was strained as he pushed more energy into the task.

“Kookie!”, I said urgently in a hushed tone. “The aim is to maintain the tornado for as long as possible. Do not exert yourself. Channel your magic slowly and steadily.”

The speed reduced instantly and the four of us kept at it. Our instructor, Seokjin, had made it abundantly clear that this was a test of endurance. I looked at him standing a few paces away observing us with a glint of what I assumed to be pride in his eyes.

“How much longer are we planning on continuing?”, Jimin asked. “Bogum and his lackeys maintained it for 20 minutes. We have surpassed 35. We have already won.”

“When at war, warlocks need to maintain storms for hours on end. We need to keep at it till our bodies give out. The better we perform here the sooner we will get called for quests.”

“We have scripture studies with Namjoon hyung afterwards, Rina. We cannot pass out from this.”, Taehyung piped up.

“Okay, on a scale of 1 to 10, how tired are you guys?”

“About 5?” said Taehyung.

“More or less” said Jimin.

“Same” said Jungkook.

“Alright then, we stop when one of us arrive at 8. Is that okay with everyone?”

They nodded.

When the tornado finally fizzed away above us, Seokjin walked towards the four of us with a wide smile on his face.

“Well done!” he said patting each one of us on the shoulders. “One hour seven minutes.”

We fell back in line with the rest of the trainees and Seokjin turned to face the class.

“Today’s test was about controlling your magic – controlling its pace, force and direction. All of you did well. What I gather from your performances is that you are ready to progress to the next level. We will meet again next week.”

I raised my hand.

“Yes, Valerina?”

“Could you tell us what the next level is going to focus on? So that we could read up about it before the training starts?” The rest of the trainees groaned audibly. Not the four of us though. We had bigger things in mind.

“Today you showed how to keep a tornado focussed in a place. Next, we learn to control its direction and make it move to our desired location. You can read up about it. But I suggest that you try to understand the process with practice instead of following written instructions.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Alright, you are all dismissed for today. Remember the purpose of today’s test: strength can win you the battle but tenacity will win you the war.”

“Valerina, Jungkook, Taehyung and Jimin, would the four of you stay back?”

Uh oh! This never turned out to be good.

Seokjin was a bit serious now. “I am curious, why did you maintain the tornado for over an hour when you knew that half an hour was good enough for you to pass?”

“Showing you our tenacity, hyung!” Jimin retorted cheekily.

“You should not waste your energy to show off.” he said firmly though his eyes were kind. “Right now, you look like you are ready to faint right here. Go shower and make sure to eat something before your scripture studies.”

“We were not showing off! We just….” Jungkook protested but was cut off by Seokjin with a glare.

“You know very well what you were doing. Or you will know once you think this over after you have calmed down. You are dismissed. But I do not want my brothers and sister acting like fools! Is that clear?”

“Yes, hyung” the three of the murmured.

“Rina?”, he warned.

“Yes, hyung (Yes, I call them hyung.)”, I muttered.

“Run along. We will talk later.”
