It wasn’t meant to happen more than once. 

Actually, it wasn’t even meant to happen once.  

It’s simple enough- Ashlyn gets overwhelmed or overstimulated by whatever is going on, Aiden holds out his arm, and Ashlyn draws on it until she’s able to calm down again. Simple and to the point, but not something she ever would have foreseen as becoming regular. 

It’s embarrassing the first time. Ashlyn forgets to bring her headphones to school one day as an emergency precaution, and of course at lunch the cafeteria is loud. Too loud. She’s considering crumpling into a ball on the floor and holding her hands over her ears until lunch break is over when Aiden, who apparently had zeroed in on her discomfort a moment ago, leans across the table and says around a mouthful of Doritos, “Something wrong, Ash?” 

She shifts uncomfortably in her seat. “No–” 

“Ash.” He raises an eyebrow at her, setting his bag of chips aside. “I know you’re lying to me.” 

She scowls at him. “I’m fine.” 

Aiden shakes his head at her, clearly not believing it. “You’re practically shaking. And you’re sweating. What’s going on?” 

“Nothing!” Ashlyn says defensively. 

“I’m just going to keep asking till you tell me,” Aiden persists, reaching across the table and poking her cheek with one finger. “So you might as well.” 

She huffs in annoyance, then glances at the other four at the table. The twins are arguing about something, Ben is drawing in his sketchbook, and Logan is studying for a test next period. Hopefully none of them will notice. “Fine,” she mutters, lowering her voice and leaning forward slightly so Aiden can hear. “I just– I forgot to bring my headphones today and it’s really loud in here and my earbuds aren’t doing anything.” 

Aiden hums, thinking for a moment before he states, “So…you’re feeling overstimulated?”

Ashlyn nods, slouching in her seat and propping her chin on her arms. “Yeah.” 

“Do you wanna draw on my arm?”
