been meaning to redraw this for a while, always loved that old drawing ^-^

did you know they used to make watch parts, specifically the hands, out of radium. and people who now handle these antique parts often wear body suits and gloves and observe them behind shields. geiger counters click like crazy at them.

we also used to make glassware with uranium. it's called uranium glass (sometimes vaseline glass due to the color, also a lot of old circus glass contained uranium). people would eat and drink out of it, however it gives off statistically less radiation than a microwave does.

this is because it was used to color the glass, and was used in the creation process. the reason it fell out of practice wasn't due to safety concerns but rather during WWII they needed uranium. it simply fell out of practice, but you can still buy uranium glass beads. also if you ever see lime green antique glass it's probably uranium glass, but you can tell if you shine a black light on it because it will glow and fluoresce.

another radiation fun fact. most smoke detectors use americium. it puts particles of it in the air which is conductive, which is how it senses smoke. however these particles are harmless to us. however if your smoke detector were to break you should follow instructions on disposal of the unit properly.
