The first time Princess Himeko laid eyes on you was at her coming of age celebration. You hadn't even considered that you might be on her radar. Being the third daughter of a baron, you hardly had the status to attend the ball, much less speak with the crown princess.

Your father had only permitted you to attend the event in hopes that you would find a suitor, some noble to marry you off to, likely as a second or third wife.

And you blew it.

Not only did you fail to interact with nobles, you became a mockery instead. Even the crown princess was eyeing you like you were an eyesore. You had earned the scorn of noble society and drawn the ire of one of the most powerful women in the kingdom.

It was no wonder, then, that you hadn't received a single proposal in the year or so since that party. Even the few houses that had sent proposals prior had withdrawn them, firmly branding you as a failure of a noble.

That is, until the eve of your twentieth birthday when a messenger arrives bearing a letter from the royal family.

Surely, you think as your father reads you the contents of the letter aloud, this is another attempt to ridicule you. As have been all the invitations you received from the crown princess. It hasn't been infrequent either, being invited to events far above your station only to be belittled under people's breath. Even if you didn't think she despised you, the third daughter of a baron marrying into the royal family is unheard of.

But your opinion doesn't matter, at least not to your father. It hardly takes a day for him to accept the proposal, and in less than a week you're sitting in a carriage bound for the palace, adorned with the most expensive fineries your family can afford.

Himeko was ecstatic when she heard you accepted her proposal. She barely left your side from the moment you set foot in the palace, not unless it was urgent, and even then it was even odds if she would drag you with her. Any spare moment she had, her arm would be linked with yours. Himeko was simply infatuated, unable to resist your gentle beauty and meek personality.

She had done so much work, so much planning and preparation all to make you hers. Blocking all those proposals had been a dull ordeal, but it was immediately made worth it when she silently slipped through the door connecting your bedrooms.

The sight of you in that thin little negligee she gave you set Himeko's heart aflutter. You hadn't noticed her yet, brushing your hair absently as you prepare for bed. You catch sight of her in the mirror a moment too late, trying to turn and greet her only to be wrapped in her arms.
