How to write a kiss scene

requested by: anon request: How do I write a good kiss scene? As how do I describe it? What details or words would make it good?
What goes into the writing of a kiss scene?
details to incorporate:
the sensations in their stomach, their chest, and their knees
the way their breathing changes shortly before the kiss
the feeling of the other's hands
the texture of the other's clothing
the moment they realise they've reached the point of no return
the feeling they're left with after the kiss
words to use...
... to describe the kiss:
tentative
tender
hesitant
quick
soft
gentle
delicate
languid
feathery
familiar
exploring
hungry
heated
fiery
frantic
impatient
sloppy
messy
aggressive
... to describe how they feel about the kiss:
nervous
excited
giddy
anxious
apprehensive
ambiguous
surprised
reassured
certain
confident
relieved
eager
greedy
... to show what the lips do:
exploring each other
brushing over each other
locking
devouring
touching
sealing
pressing against each other
capturing
lapping
tasting
crushing together
travelling (the other's body)
trailing (down to the other's chin)
grinning into the kiss
caressing
lingering
... to show how their body reacts:
feeling warm all over
buzzing
humming
pumping/palpitating heart
clenching lungs
joy bubbling up
tingly stomach
warm chest
burning cheeks
sweaty palms
blood rushing through their veins
... to describe what their hands are doing:
tangling in their lover's hair
wrapping their arms around their lover's neck
intertwining their fingers with their lover
resting on their lover's hips
pressing into their lover's shoulder blades
cupping their lover's cheeks
touching their lover's chin
curling their arm around their lover's waist
resting on their lover's shoulders
grabbing their lover's collar
sneaking up under their lover's shirt
brushing over their lover's bare skin
lightly squeezing their lover's butt
focus on:
the sensations instead of what's physically happening. (the protagonists might very well not know themselves what is happening exactly, but they feel very precisely)
I hope this helps <3
there is something so intimate about a simple "look at me" told to your sub. "look at me" when they are so lost in pleasure they barerly register your words. "look at me" while they are on their knees, waiting for any commands. "look at me" while you hold them close, so close you share the same heartbeat. the eyes always tell what mouth cannot.

Vary your language with synonyms to use instead of "said"
While there is nothing wrong with the word "said" in and of itself, variety is the key to exciting writing that keeps readers engaged.
Combining action beats with varied synonyms as well as "said" yields the most interesting and varied results.
Here are some examples you can use in your next project to keep you writing varied:
Instead of "said quietly"
whispered
murmured
muttered
croaked
purred
hissed
crooned
breathed
buzzed
Instead of "said affectionately"
admired
gushed
praised
flattered
lauded
beamed
complimented
approved
exalted
Instead of "said sadly"
sobbed
cried
lamented
pleaded
wept
grieved
wailed
sniffled
bawled
Instead of "said angrily"
growled
fumed
demanded
hissed
scolded
mocked
yelled
bellowed
berated
Instead of "said fearfully"
stuttered
gasped
stammered
gulped
cautioned
screamed
wavered
croaked
blanched
Instead of "said excitedly"
cheered
sang
beamed
rejoiced
hailed
exclaimed
celebrated
exulted
blurted
Instead of "said uncertainly"
inquired
hesitated
balked
deferred
speculated
floundered
pondered
wavered
vacillated
Neutral synonyms to use instead of "said"

A Horror Beat Sheet
There are no hard-and-fast rules in writing fiction. There are, however, some established patterns and expectations, and once you know them, you’ll be able to work within those patterns and deviate from the path as you see fit.
What is a Beat Sheet?
Popularized by Blake Snyder’s book Save The Cat, beat sheets are an outlining method often used for screenwriting that some authors have started to use for books as well. Basically, a beat sheet lays out the story ‘beats’ or necessary plot points that make up the essential story structure. The Hero’s Journey is, essentially, a beat sheet. You can see more beat sheet information here: https://timstout.wordpress.com/story-structure/blake-snyders-beat-sheet/
Horror has a slightly different structure than other stories, and for that reason I don’t think a classic beat sheet works quite right for it. So with that in mind, here is my somewhat adapted version, drawn from my studies of horror media. Various beats can be reorganized somewhat, and will vary a bit depending on sub-genre and other considerations. But if you need help in establishing a horror plot…this beat sheet should help guide the way.
Horror Story Beat Sheet
Act One (The Setup):
1 - The World is Not What it Seems
(The reader catches an early glimpse of the monster, or a hint that the monster exists. This is optional, and may occur right away – often as a prologue – or after the main characters have been introduced.)
2 - Putting the Players in Action
(You introduce the important characters and the primary internal conflict)
3 - Setting them on the Path
(The characters make a choice that inadvertently isolates them or places them on a collision course with the monster)
4 - The Warning
(The characters are given an opportunity to turn back, but choose not to; could occur before or after The First Contact With The Monster.)
5 - The First Contact with the Monster
(The characters have their initial contact with the monster, but are unaware of the true threat it poses.)
Act Two (The Turn): 6 - Shit Gets Real (May be the first death or when seriously spooky activity begins; regardless, this is when the danger becomes evident and unavoidable)
7 - The Chase (The monster pursues the characters, who lack the skills to fight it; one or more people may die here)
8 - Failed Confrontation (The main character attempts to destroy the monster, but does not yet possess the ability to do so)
9 - The Darkest Hour (Hope appears lost. Perhaps someone very important has died, or the hero has tried everything they can think of. The link between the internal conflict and monster may become clear to the character here)
Act Three (The Prestige): 10 - A Different Solution (The hero gains new information on how to defeat the monster. This may be delivered by someone they seek out for help, or may come through soul searching and observation.)
11 - Seeking Out the Beast (For the first time, the hero approaches the monster, rather than fleeing it. They intend to enact their solution)
12 - The True Cost is Revealed (In the process of confronting the monster, the hero realizes that to overcome it, the internal conflict must be encountered and defeated. That is the hidden cost; the hero will be irrevocably changed)
13 - Sacrifices Are Made (or not) (Faced with the ultimate choice, the hero either succeeds in defeating their internal conflict and winning against the monster, or fails and ultimately succumbs to their weakness)
14 - The Inevitable Fall Out (Show the consequences of whichever choice is made)
15 - Evil Cannot Be Conquered, Only Delayed (If the hero failed #13, show the monster relishing its victory in a changed world. If the hero succeeded, show a hint that the monster may yet return. )
—- I think you will find that if you compare many, many, many horror stories against this beat sheet, you will see versions of this structure/pattern. I encourage you to try it. I’ll post some plot studies of my own to show you later.
There is no single “right” way to write a story, and I certainly don’t think you must follow this structure in order to be successful. But I can guarantee you that following this structure will give you the framework necessary for a complete and emotionally satisfying horror story.
Caveat: this beat sheet is meant for long-form stories such as novels and films. Short stories follow a very different structure. We can talk about that in a later chapter.

Types of Opening Scenes for Your Novel
Here are a handful of ways to open the very first scene in your book! There are plenty more to explore, but these are a set of very tried and true methods.
Autobiographic - your protagonist starts the book reflecting or talking about a past event. They’re looking back in time and sharing an important piece of information with the reader.
In trouble/conflict - a problem has arisen for the protagonist and a sense of urgency is established. This can be an intense conflict like a chase scene or a puzzling problem.
Mysterious opening - the reader is introduced to something peculiar (a fantasy location, unique magic, a cloaked figure, etc.) that raises questions in their mind. Their curiosity will keep them reading.
Scene-setting - the most common opening where you focus on introducing the setting and the characters in it before anything else.
The questioner - the protagonist is questioning something: “Who invited the guy in the trench coat covered in red?”
Beginning with a thought - the novel is started with a philosophical quote or meaningful thought from the protagonist. “What is living worth if she’s not doing it with me?”
Intriguing dialogue - the book starts with interesting dialogue that captures the attention of the reader.
Mood establisher - the novel opens with a deliberate mood that signifies to the reader what they should expect from the story. Ex. a spooky story may open with eerie words and a dark atmosphere.

List of Vocal Sounds for Smut
I present to you a - probably quite incomplete, I’m sure I’m missing a lot of speech sounds - reference list and a bit of a guideline for the different ways one can describe the sounds your characters make whilst writing smut. I’ll definitely be referring to it, because I sometimes get stuck on exactly how to describe a particular noise. (aka, “he can’t groan again, he just groaned last paragraph”)
Sounds (noun, both independently and describing speech): breath/breathe, gasp, moan, groan, pant, whimper, whine, shout, yelp, hiss, grunt, cry, scream, shriek, sob, growl, curse, sound, sigh, hum, noise, squeak, snarl, howl, roar, mewl, wail, choke, keen, purr
Sounds (noun, describing speech): rasp, husk, drawl, plea, murmur, whisper, beg
Descriptors (adjective): loud, hushed, quiet, low, high, high-pitched, little, tiny, soft, deep, unrestrained, restrained, strained, breathy, rough, sudden, short, drawn-out, sharp, harsh, hard, thick, smooth, thin, heavy, impassioned, insistent, hungry, passionate, repeated, filthy, debauched, sweet, slow, deliberate, guttural, languid, surprised, husky, distracted, happy, pleased, satisfied, wordless, cut-off, bitten-off, contented, hoarse, extended, long, depraved, aching, choked, strangled, broken, helpless, shuddering, shaky, trembling, urgent, needy, desperate, wanton, shattered, pained, eager
Combine a descriptor and a sound for best effect - for example, “needy moan,” “pleased hum,” or “sudden scream.” You can even use two: “low, rough grunt,” “sweet little cry,” “desperate, filthy noise,” as long as you don’t repeat a word that means the same thing, unless you really want to emphasize it. Avoiding repetition is pretty key here. You don’t usually want to say “hushed, quiet gasp” except on rare occasions when it’s very important how soft the sound was.
Use your own common sense, as well; some sounds and descriptors don’t generally work well together. “Deliberate shriek” probably wouldn’t work well, and neither would “languid grunt,” but again, this is all very situational - play around! Have fun.
Feel free to add to my lists, use for your reference or pass them around. It would be fun to see a randomized generator made, too, I’m just too lazy to do it myself. ;)

So you’re looking to write some smut but feeling stuck, uninspired, or unsure where to start. Smut writing comes easily to some and not others, and that’s okay! Here are some tips I’ve gathered over my few years of writing smut to take with a grain of salt! It's my opinion; you can always do what you want!! <333
It’s fiction writing at the end of the day. So, it’s okay if you haven’t experienced what you’re writing about or maybe you have experienced it but you find it difficult to put it into words. I’ve never fought a creature from the Upside Down but I’ve written about it because that’s what fiction writing IS!! You’re creating a story from your own experiences/thoughts/emotions and applying it to a made-up scenario. So don’t feel discouraged by your own personal journey, anyone can write smut!!
When in doubt, plan it out. When I’m really stuck, just simply grabbing a piece of notebook paper and writing out each event in a sequence, even in the most basic terms, can make things so much easier. For example: making out, blow job, hand job, prep, fuck. Write down positions (sometimes limbs can get lost in the sauce and it is so hard to figure out how they’re actually doing it lmao). Write down settings. Write down if one person is leading it more than the other or if they switch off. Write down desperation levels (personally, I think it’s more fun when desperation is very high but casual fluffy smut is fun too!!) This will help the writing process feel a lot less daunting.
More specifically, remember that prep is important. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been taken out of a smutty fic because they get to the main act (penetration, typically) way before someone should be ready to. Fingers, mouths, and lube (actual lube or something that can be safely used as lube. Blood is not lube. Blood is not lube as it is a liquid that dries quickly and offers no moisture so it will not help you penetrate anything, as hot as it would be.) Foreplay and prep can be a really good tool to establish a sexy dynamic between your characters and get the reader ramped up to read through to the end!
If you feel like the action part is getting too technical, this is where you can add in thoughts and emotions that will give your smut some personality. It can feel very silly to write, for instance, your character A thinking “Wow character B is so hot” but it’s a thought that would probably cross their mind!! Write out any nerves the characters are feeling or maybe even the confidence they’re feeling. Write out what sensations they pay attention to. Write out what they like and dislike. Write out what actions cause an immediate response from them (moaning, bucking their hips, groaning, eyes rolling, etc.) Write out how your character would verbally respond (Are they dirty talking? Are they praising? Are they degrading? Are they stuttering through their words? Are they incoherent because the sex is so good?) It’s important that your characters still feel natural and not like sex robots. Unless your story is about sex robots, then go off!!!
The thesaurus is your fucking FRIEND!! Smut can feel ridiculously repetitive, especially if you’ve written it before. I say every time I write a blow job scene that “god blow job scene is blow job scene is blow job scene” because that’s how it FEELS! Use your resources like the thesaurus or there are a million posts with other ways to say “said”, ways to describe a kiss, etc. Just be careful that you don’t fall into using words that seem unnatural to the flow of the story (for example, a lot of synonyms for cock are simply…unsettling and can take your reader out of the story). Find ways to creatively tell the same action again and again which leads to tip #5…
Go read some smut. The tag “porn what plot” is so unbelievably helpful. Even if the writing isn’t exactly your style or your preference, sometimes reading someone else’s descriptions of sexual acts can be helpful if you’re lost! I have a few faves that I go back to read to get inspiration and I have notes about what it is specifically I enjoyed about their work. While you’re at it, if a fic inspires you and you feel comfortable doing so, leave a comment! It’ll make the author’s day, I promise.
TAKE THIS TIP WITH AN ABSOLUTE GRAIN OF SALT but…go watch it. Or my personal preference, go listen to it. If I’m really lost, I’ll seek out audio porn that follows the same ~vibe~ of whatever I’m writing. There are many websites for this but Soundgasm is my go-to (it’s a free upload site so there are THOUSANDS of sounds and varying quality levels so it might take a second to find what you’re looking for)! Even a sexy playlist on Spotify can put you into a good headspace for writing. Just make sure you’re being safe and looking out for your own comfort levels. Never put yourself in a situation to experience something triggering for the sake of writing a good story.
All of this to say, it is so different to write smut than it is to write a regular plot. It can feel incredibly daunting to go about it and find the perfect balance between technical actions and thoughts/feelings/dialogue and then make it all cohesive in the end. It’s hard to do but it’s not impossible!
Haha, so I’ve been saying I’m going to write something like this forever, and then yesterday my housemate found that someone beat me to it.
Required reading, friends! So you don’t screw it up if you’re writing fanfic – and so you can suffer along with me if you’re reading it.
My contribution to the smut talk behind the cut. XD (And also one of my Craig-writing friend’s finest moments.) So strap in for –

List of smut prompts
“So how do you want me to fuck you?”
“I’m not sharing you with anybody. You’re mine, and mine only, and I’m going to make you remember that.”
“That’s sweet and all but do they touch you the way I touch you? Fuck you the way I fuck you? Mm, yeah, didn’t think so.”
A softly spoken, “Want you to fuck me like you mean it.”
“Let me take care of you, yeah? I’ll do the work.”
“Gonna fuck you until the only word you remember is my name.”
“Can I… can I touch you?”
“My God, you’re so fucking gorgeous like this.”
“Can I— can I please touch myself?”
“Wanna see how you look when you come undone under me.”
“I’ll make you feel good, I promise. Just trust me.”
“You sound/taste/feel/look so fucking good.”
“Oh God, you feel amazing, baby.”
A whispered “Please” slipping out of kiss bitten lips.
“Mine. All mine.”
“You drive me so insane, you don’t even know.”
“I love getting to know you like this.”
“You. Me. Bed. Clothes off. Now.”
“Is this okay?”
“How much do you want this?”
“Doing so good for me, sweetheart.”
“Shh, just a little more…”
“You’re taking me so well, baby.”
“Say please.”
“I want you in all the ways you’ll let me have you.”
“Tell me how you want me.”
Soft whines and whimpers; held back noises because they don’t want anyone else hearing them; a plea for more without the use of words.
“Oh, I can think of many ways to shut you up right now.”
“Wanna hear you beg for it, yeah?”
“Where do you want me to touch you?” “I don’t know and I don’t care — I just want your hands on me. Please.”
“P-please just”—a sob—“I just need you to fuck me.”
“Need/want you in me.”
“Beg and maybe I’ll think about it.”
“Not so fast, bun.”
“So… You touch yourself to the thought of me? I’d like to see that in action.”
“Want your fingers in me.”
“Now, why don’t we teach you a lesson?”
“Touch yourself for me.”
“Tell me how you like/want/need it.”
“I wanna taste you on my lips again.”
It’s the gentle and soft touches which send shivers skittering down their spine.
“Rough or gentle?”
“Fuck, look at you right now…”
“You’re really messing with my head here.”
“Fuck, just touch me already! Just— just do something!” “Not so fast. We’ve still got the whole night/day ahead of us.”
“Wanna feel you against me.”
“Don’t wanna come until I feel you in me.”
“Clothes on or clothes off?”
“All yours. Only yours.”
“How about we put that pretty mouth of yours into good use, hm?”
“Fuck, I need/want you so bad.”
“I want you to say my name like that again.”
“Aren’t you desperate?”
“Only I get to ruin you like this, you hear me?”
“Only I get to touch you like this, okay?”
“Patience, love. We’re getting there.”
“Look at your reflection. Look at how gorgeous you are. So fucking gorgeous when I’m fucking you like this. So pretty for me, and only for me.”
“Be good for me.”
“You want to come?” “Y-yes, I— please—” “Hm, but do you really deserve to?”
“You like that, don’t you?”
“Let’s make your thoughts a reality, yeah?”
“Imagine how amazing you’d sound when I’m fucking you senseless.”
“I’ll fuck you so good, I promise.”
“I can taste myself on your lips and it’s messing me up real bad.”
“You look like a mess and I love it, because I’m the one who made you like this.”
“You’ve got me all hot and bothered.”
“You don’t get to touch yourself until I say so.”
“Always so needy for me, aren’t you? Can’t help yourself, can you?”
“Please let me come.”
“I-I promise I’ll be good.”
“How are you feeling?”
“God, you feel so good around me.”
“So wet/hard for me already, huh?”
“You good?”
“Mm, always so impatient for me, aren’t you?”
“Do I turn you on that much?” “You don’t even fucking know.”
“You wanna take control?”
“Let me ride you.”
“Behave.”
“F-Fuck, I don’t think I’m gonna last long if you keep doing that.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever wanted someone more.”
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
“Stop fucking teasing me and get to it already.”
“Oh, the things I’d do to you if we were alone right now…”
“Th-There are people outside this door—” “Well, this isn’t about them, is it?”
“Look at you, squirming under me, all flushed and pretty looking. Can’t even take a little teasing, can you?”
“Yeah, but they don’t fuck you the way you deserved to be fucked, do they?”
“Might I remind you that these walls aren’t sound proof.”
A softly exhaled, “I don’t think I can ever get enough of you.”
“Do you know how much I love seeing you like this?”
“How do you want me to touch you?”
“Let me show you how much I mean what I say.”
“Gonna make sure you don’t forget about tonight.”
Whispered praises against the other’s lips, which are met with soft whimpers and moans.
“Need me to remind you on what happened last night?”
“Oh, sensitive there, aren’t we?”
In a hoarse whisper, “Fuck, you’re killing me here.”
“But you think about me when they’re fucking you, don’t you?” “I… That’s not true.”
“Try not to be so noisy, yeah?”
“Tell me if it hurts, okay?”
“Lift your hips up for me.”
“Fuck, you’re so hot when you’re bossy.”
“Look at you, coming undone before I’ve even started touching you.”
“Stop glaring at me like you don’t enjoy me teasing you.”
“I want to be the one fucking you this time.”
“Sweetheart, you’re so responsive to my touch.”
“I think you’d look even better under me.”
“And I think you’d look fucking hot when you’re on top of me.”
“Want you to ruin me.”
“Do whatever you want with me.”
“Just sit on my fucking face already.”
“Who gave you permission to touch yourself?”
“What did I just say?”
“You feel so fucking good in me.”
“You can have all of me if that’s what you want.”
“Baby—shit—I don’t think I’m gonna make it to the bed like this.”
“Tell me if it becomes too much, okay?” “Okay.”
“S-Stop leaving marks on my neck. I have a presentation first thing in the morning.” “Then I get to leave marks anywhere below the neck?”
“Let me make you feel good this time?”
“You only get to watch.” “B-but—” “No buts, sweetheart.”
“I’d fuck you right here, right now, if I could.”
“Let’s take it back to my place.”
“Are we— are we really going to do this here?”
“Turn around.”
“You look so cute like this, you know?” “Shut the fuck up and just fuck me already.”
“Why’d you stop?” “Because you sounded too fucking good and so I had like, a moment.”
“I don’t like people touching what’s mine.”
“Eyes on me at all times, sweetheart.”
“I wanna eat you out so fucking bad.” “Then why don’t you?”
“Spread your legs for me.” … “Spread them wider.”
Hands firm on their thighs, keeping them from snapping them shut.
“I’m not done with you yet.”
A whispered, “Then come for me,” right next to their ear after they beg for release through tears and soft whimpers, because they’ve been edged for way too long.
“Admit it — you want this as much as I do.”
“I’ll be honest: I get off to the thought of you.”
“No one does it like you.”
“Christ, I wanna fuck you so bad.” “You’ll get to do that once we get home.”
“I want you in the most sinful ways possible.”
“Need a hand?”
“Aww, how eager can you get?”
“I want you to touch me like I’m the only thing you could ever want.”
“Can’t— can’t you go faster than this?”
“You like messing with my head, don’t you?” “Only because it clearly turns you on.”
“B-But what about you?” “We can worry about me later. It’s all about you right now.”
“Shit, I’m so fucking hooked on you it’s not even funny.”
“You’d sound so good begging for it.”
“Fuck, you have such a tight hold on me, you don’t even know.”
“Don’t make too many noises or we’ll get caught.” “That’s part of the thrill.”
“I don’t care, I just need these clothes off so I can fully feel you against me.”
“You’re the only one I’ve ever wanted so badly.”

Want to use a fancy custom language for something, but don’t know how to make one?Use Vulgar!
Vulgar is a conlang (constructed/fictional language) generator created to help literally generate a language for you. No, really. No tricks, and it’s super simple to use. It’s my favourite tool right now for writing fantasy, even as someone who loves creating his own languages, it’s an amazing starting point.
Want a random conlang, straight away, with no prep or fuss? Just visit http://vulgarlang.com/index.html and click “Generate New Conlang”… and that’s it. Scroll down and through your brand new, generated, completely original conlang.
If you’re a little more advanced in terms of conlanging and want to specify IP phonemes to be used, you can add them too, but even with no knowledge of linguistics you can create a language at the click of your fingers.
This version of Vulgar is completely free, sure…. but! the guy who created it has not only made an amazing thing (which I repeat, is absolutely free at it’s most basic point), but is also planning on updating it more and more!
Under the “Buy” tab on the Vulgar website, he links to his email, where you can offer to pay for the full version of Vulgar, which is a total steal right now at a sale price of only nineteen dollars. Considering professional conlangers and linguists could charge you, like, a metric fuck ton of money for the same data you’re getting here for just nineteen, that’s a major steal.
Not to mention, buying the alpha build now gives you free access to all of it’s updated versions, which I can guarantee are just going to get better and better! I’ve already bought it and I adore it, and this is a tool the likes of which we in the conlang community have never seen in such an awesome way.
Please consider helping Vulgar out, because the creator is a damn genius
You come to the realization that the tall metal fences surrounding the orphanage aren’t made to keep the children safe from the public, but to keep the public safe from what’s inside.

Writing a historical novel means knowing how far they can travel on a horse, This is good info right here.

Do you have any suggestions on how to make Dungeon Crawls more.. exciting or have a better atmosphere? Rather than just "The hallway extends 20ft and turns left.." I love dungeons, but as a DM it feels like my delivery is.. bland.
Lots of DMs struggle with this, and for good reason.
Dungeons are the most mechanically straightforward aspect of the game besides combat, and the immediate shape and contents of them is more pressing to players than the atmosphere.
But, there are some simple ways to make your dungeons more atmospheric. Here’s my proposed solutions, both a long thinky one and a fast random one:
I think that dungeons should thought about as ‘once functional spaces’. Every place in the world has a purpose for which it was built, even if it’s a weirdo crazy one. Dungeon rooms should almost always be more than just treasure, traps, and monsters.

For example, temples have cloisters, treasuries, storage rooms, waiting rooms, choirs, sanctuaries, apse, washing rooms, etc. Each of these rooms has specific objects and furniture inside them, as well as different acoustics. They get decorated with frescoes and murals or hanging art or sculptures. They’re cultural places. Think about them as physical spaces that people would use.
Now imagine something happened in them, long ago. Why is this place a ‘dungeon’ and not still used? What event caused it to be abandoned? A battle? Plague? Was the place cursed? Come up with that and you can seed the rooms with small historical details: evidence of fights, skeletal remains, treasures hidden so they could be reclaimed later (but never were).
Now add the effects of time and nature. Fabric rots, metal rusts, stone erodes and crumbles. Plants and roots push stone tiles aside, and water seeps in and floods deep places. The passage of ages scours away history and purpose. Now, your once functional rooms don’t appear so functional, but their purpose can still be intuited.
Now add some new tenants. Monsters are always the first to reclaim abandoned civilized spaces: goblins make shantytowns out of old human ruins, beasts make warrens in sepulchral tombs, small dragons and basilisks favour places with statuaries and abandoned treasures. No matter the space or its original purpose, monsters move in and call it home. Sometimes multiple species of monsters…and then they fight or argue over sharing space.

So now your dungeon has a vivid look and feel. The important bit now is to think about how that imagined space sounds and smells.
With every room and hallway, imagine how its history smells. Is it acrid or pungent? Smokey or mouldy? Does it smell surprisingly pleasant? If so, that’s often a worrisome sign, because it means something sentient might already be there.
Audio can clue players into a space faster than any other description. Wind whistling indicates access to the surface…or a much deeper cave. Dripping denotes water (you hope). Creaking could mean doors…or ghosts. Large spaces echo, and sounds warp and distort the further away they are. There’s even different kinds of silence. There’s an empty, lonely silence that comes with long dead spaces, or the claustrophobic close silence of small spaces.
Appeal to your players senses besides sight. Describe what rooms smell, sound, and even taste or feel like. This is a surefire way to make your dungeon rooms stand out. For example:
“You enter a 20 by 20 foot square room. It’s a stuffy old parlour. Pushing the door open you immediately smell something caustic and sour, but you don’t see an immediate source. All the furniture is rotted, but some of it looks smashed. You can hear the faintest scraping of something against the wall in the adjacent room”.
If that seems like a lot to write, try something like this: Reveal each bullet point as the players inquire about them, or when they make Perception checks:
Parlour, 20 ft square room.
The room feels uncomfortably thick and stuffy.
All the furniture is rotted out. Some of it is smashed. Evidence of a fight.
Smells caustic and sour. The smell comes from under a tattered rug. It’s beholder puke. 50gp if collected and sold to the right buyer.
Scraping sounds from the cloaker in the next room.

So maybe you already have a pretty basic dungeon and you need to make each room (or block of rooms) less boring. Here’s my handy set of sense tables:
Random Room Sensations:
For each room you want to enhance, roll four dice (a d12, a d10, a d8, and a d6). Your rolls will determine what’s up with this room. Every time you roll a result, cross it out and replace it with a new one you come up with.
Smells (1d12):
Sickly sweet, like rotting fruit or wilting flowers.
Musty, like old people and expired cologne.
Tangy, like body odour and grime.
Dusty, the choking scent of age and ghosts.
Foul, like waste and death; something unholy.
Crisp, like freshly cut grass or unchecked plant life.
Soggy, the lingering smell of still water and flooding.
Pungent, like rot and decay.
Spicy, like herbs and dried ingredients, aged.
Electric, a faint aroma of ozone and metals.
Earthy, like fresh dirt and clay, mixed in with the copper of blood.
Roll again twice, both smells clash together.
Sounds (1d10):
Claustrophobic silence.
Deep, echoing silence.
Low moaning or groaning.
Creaking of wood in the distance.
Faint, maddeningly indistinct whispering.
Faint, maddeningly indistinct whispering in a language you don’t know.
Metal scraping against metal, rhythmically.
Dripping of some kind of liquid onto stone.
Dripping of some kind of liquid into more liquid.
Roll again twice, both sounds are present.
Touch Sensations (1d8):
Dryness on the skin, chapped lips and dry eyes.
Cold dampness, water beads on metal items.
Humidity, clothes become hot and heavy, metal feels colder.
Dry heat, throats become parched, skin itches.
Pressure change, ears pop and noises distort.
Static tingling, hair stands up on end, goosebumps.
Unholy chill, shivers, goosebumps, a sense of unease.
The feeling of being watched, an uncomfortable presence.
Kinds of Darkness, if applicable (1d6):
Grey, distant darkness that yields to lantern light.
Cloying, smothering darkness that seems to draw close to you.
Eerie still darkness that feels like it holds endless monsters.
Calm, still darkness that invites restfulness.
Flickering, shifting darkness where the room seems to be moving.
Impenetrable darkness that makes darkvision endowed races feel at uneasy.
I hope all this helps make your dungeons a little less boring. The dungeon tables in the back of the 5e Dungeon Master’s Guide from @dndwizards is also helpful in this regard.

You can actually add your own images into it if you want to compare more dynamic characters or use alternate poses. And I’ll show you how owo
1. You go on the site:

2. Left click the image and scroll down to inspect:

3. You see those two links down there? Those are the image links for the sillouhettes, just add your own image (must be a url, i personally like imgur):

4. And bingo bango! You got your own custom images to compare heights with! I hope this was helpful owo
