You didn’t get any sleep that night. In fact, even after dawn, after morning, after a long bath, your thoughts were still like a storm in your mind, Geralt’s words echoing in your ears.

He had left soon after he figured out what was written on your back, saying he needed to find your court mage, since he was also present during the time the witch had put that curse on you. Needless to say, it had even made you more confused the more you stayed alone with your thoughts, but of course, you wouldn’t get to stay like that for long. The giggles coming from outside made you look up from your sketching and in a couple of seconds, your door opened and Fin and Meriel rushed inside, with Fin grinning and Meriel clutching at her stomach to stop her giggles. Cassie raised her brows, a small smile pulling at her lips and you frowned slightly.

“Uh…good morning, you two.”

“Shhh!”

“What-?”

“We’re hiding from mother’s guards.” Fin whispered, and Meriel nodded, still giggling.

“She doesn’t want us to spend any time together at all before the wedding.”

“Yes because apparently, I will corrupt her.”

Meriel covered her lips to contain her laugh, but the second her eyes caught the sight of Cassie she almost froze, blinking a couple of times as if she was mesmerized.

“H-hello Cassie.”

“Your highness.”

“Oh you two met? Cassie is the love of my life, Meriel.”

Your eyes widened, “Fin! Don’t tell your future wife that!”

“I’m really not, your highness.” Cassie added hastily and Fin rolled his eyes.

“Yeah yeah, but she doesn’t love me back at all, so…” he turned to you, “We’re friends, it’s all good.”

“I don’t mind that,” Meriel stole a look at Cassie, then blushed and cleared her throat, “I- um… We’re sorry to disturb you, Y/N.”

“You didn’t,” you shook your head, “So what, you are trying to make mother mad?”

To say you’ve been going through a rough patch is a bit of an understatement. It’s been more like a rough season. It started when you lost your job, your dream job really. You were working with a small company designing a range of retro inspired clothing. Unfortunately, cuts had to be made, and since you were relatively new, that meant the ax was on your neck. That meant you had to take a crummy retail job that is mildly related to your dream job. It was a huge blow to your confidence. After that, it just seemed like one long drag through the cactus farm. Retail is cruel and relentless, it throws things at you that you had once thought could only be the delusional ramblings of a pathological liar. You have seen things, you have done things, and it all just adds to the mire you are trudging through.

   Your birthday arrives with little pomp or circumstance. You had decided to ignore it so you wouldn’t be disappointed again. You’ve somehow managed to get the day off and all you plan to do is sleep. Instead, you get a phone call from your friend. She’s outside your door with a huge breakfast, a sack full of groceries, and a present for you.

   The present was a houseplant, a small succulent. The leaves were a sort of purple and green and pink near the roots. It was small, just a few plump little leaves in a bowl. Your friend seemed quite adamant you would enjoy it and gave you a small list of how to care for it. Water once a day, give it sugar water once a week. You weren’t sure why your friend thought a houseplant would be the perfect gift, but she was so excited about it. She said that every time she gave a friend a plant their luck turned around. You weren’t sure how to take that.
