Growing up in the Temple of Lilith had been an interesting way to spend your childhood. The Daughters of Lilith believed that she was the original feminist, refusing to be bent to the will of both Adam and God. Where many considered her a demon, the Daughters saw her as the model of womanhood: strong, self-reliant, and rejecting the notion of living under the thumb of any man, mortal or immortal.

Having been abandoned on their doorstep when you were only a few years old, they had taken you in and raised you, as they had many young women over the years, despite your condition. There was something wrong with your nerves, which caused tremors, spasms, and twitching in your body. Sometimes, you experienced a temporary paralysis of your feet and legs, which made walking difficult. The Daughters had commissioned a special chair for you from the local wood carver, which had wheels so that you could be pushed along during your episodes of muscle weakness and paralysis. There were also special canes they’d had made for you so that you could walk unassisted when you had the strength to do so.

You often experienced pain, especially when trying to sleep, and the local apothecarist’s typical medicines didn’t seem to help. Luckily, there was a traveling physician who came by regularly that sold more potent tinctures, which helped tremendously. The Daughters seem to distrust him, though in fairness, they had a natural distrust for men in general.

Your father was beside himself with worry when you returned. You were five days overdue and he was on the verge of hiring a search party. He calmed down when you explained what happened and shook Cetzu’s hand, thanking him for saving your life. Cetzu tried to keep the grimace off his face, but he accepted the praise without comment.

Cetzu formally informed your father than he intended to court you properly over a period of several months, possibly a year. Your dad took it in stride, pleased that it would be a slow process and that Cetzu wouldn’t be taking his only child away immediately. After all, it wasn’t as if he hadn’t seen this coming. Just seeing the two of you together that first day told him all he needed to know.

Cetzu came to visit as often as he could in addition to sending letters. Your father decided to sleep on the cot in his workshop when Cetzu slept over, not saying a word about it. He had been young and in love too, once, and you were more than old enough to make your own decisions. Besides, he was never the “my house, my rules” type of dad, though he wasn’t above embarrassing the both of you at breakfast the next morning.

“This is the part where we escape,” the human says, tugging against his restraints. The white-haired man behind him grunts, struggling to break his bonds.

“This is the part where they kill us!” He snarls. You watch from a dark corner in the room as Toruviel kicks the human in the face.

“Beast!” She snarls in Elder, kicking the white-haired man.

“Elves,” he spits, glaring up at her.

“Hey, that’s my lute!” You watch with a frown as his lute gets destroyed, all the while his companion is being kicked mercilessly.

“Shut up!” The white-haired man yells.

“No, you shut up!” Toruviel snaps.

“My elder speech is rough. I only got part of that.” You can almost hear Toruviel’s annoyance. “Humans, shut up!”

The human nods and replies in Elder, “Ah, got it, thanks so much.”

“Do you wanna die right now?” She asks, towering over the two men. “As opposed to later?” The pale one demands, spitting out blood. She kicks the human in the stomach and the other man nearly snarls.

“Leave off! He’s just a Bard!”

She turns to the pale man, a wave of newfound anger in her eyes as she punches him time after time.
